Gentrification is when there is so much development that the rich displace the poor on a large scale, which is certainly not happening anywhere in Winnipeg. The developments we do have are mostly happening on surface parking lots. Hippies who think all developers are evil capitalist pigs tend to call it "gentrification" anytime a new building goes up in the inner city, but they are wrong.

I think I agree with your assessment, actually. I think the dynamic in Canada just can't be compared with the American as we have much stronger social programs. I don't think there's really any city in Canada that can be called gentrified but I'm no expert.

That being said, West Broadway was a real shithole when I was growing up. Not somewhere you wanted to spend a lot of time in, that's for sure. That's definitely changed. There was a point in the not-so-distant past when West Broadway was essentially the murder capital of the country so there's been some really big changes.

The pile driving is apparently causing some of the older apartment blocks on Colony to shift.
A young nephew of a friend of mine lives in one of them and now the doors in his suite are not closing properly according to what he told his uncle.

Yup. That’s why it has that dip in the road. You can feel the shock waves of water under your feet if you stand on the street next to pile driving. It feels exactly like a wave in the water.

Despite all the negativity around the city this fall, it’s nice to see so many cranes in and around downtown, I’ve never seen this many in my lifetime.

I agree. We can't ignore the city's problems, but it's too easy to fall into the "it's all bad here, it's heaven everywhere else" trap (though some folks seem to gleefully jump into that trap face first).

Totally... especially if Graham becomes pedestrian-only. Could be a monster of a game changer for that area.
