yeah I am not moved at all. It's decent, nothing more. I guess the way he describes his projects with such eloquence makes people forget they aren't seeing anything all that great.

Is half the North facing side of the building going to be a blank wall? That's what I'm seeing in the first picture.

Baker can hopefully design a good building, one that works well for the site, and gives the owner, Carl, whatever he is asking for, and make some smart decisions about how the building comes out of the ground, how it interacts with the street, where the service entrance is, that sort of stuff.

But you are absolutely hands down right, he's no Rems Koolhaas. One might be a very good mechanic, and one is a artist.

Honestly, I'd say that this design is an improvement over the former design. While I liked it's industrial theming, the color was just too loud. If it'd been a tan or very light yellow perhaps I would've liked it a lot more.
As for you all wishing for more classical architecture, you may be excited to hear that we seem to be heading back down that route. Multiple new buildings in NYC have been designed in that style, and while in general New York can only loosely be used to predict nationwide architectural trends, I think that between the fact that everyone can agree that they're pretty, and that they're beginning to get to the point where they are a bit more cost-effective to build, we might be seeing more soon.
In fact, I am willing to bet money that the site at 8th and Market will be at least slightly classically designed.

This is so mediocre it's not even worth minor praise.

What happened to Cecil Baker.

His buildings used to be at least handsome.

This is generic AF.

I actually kinda like it. It's not that bad of a design.

Yea, I don't understand why you guys are panning it so readily. I think it looks great.

For me its more of a disappointment because I preferred the original design. The original seemed to have a sleek or modern industrial vibe to it. The new design at least would be good infill, and I think it would complement the SLS (I know )

Because it's fairly boring and repetitive as all of Cecil's recent designs have been. It's not bad, but we have so comparatively little ground-up residential luxury condo construction that it would be nice if we could do better.

Well that seems to be coming up soon. That's pretty good, considering how much waiting is involved with other skyscrapers here.

demo permit??

I could have sworn that I saw this in a Plan Philly article, which of course I can't locate, but where ever I read it, it was mentioned that a demo permit for the existing buildings was applied for sometime in August.

This makes no sense to me since the present building provide income, and Carl indicates that this project is hopefully years away, if he can finally get SLS started.

Has anyone else read anything about this?

There's a reference to demolition in the Philly Curbed article
https://philly.curbed.com/2017/8/23/...ff-cecil-baker

Pretty sure she snagged it from somewhere else, so Plan Philly would make sense..

Start is listed as "End of 2017" for this on Dranoff's website.

Yeah, but Dranoff doesn't seem like the most trustworthy guy in that regard.

That's probably what Carl wants, safe. Since he is planning on condos I'm betting that in his mind the risk of a bold design would just be too great.

I'm not in his target market so what do I know, but I think a design with some splash could actually attract as many buyers as not. At least its not another pink turd.
