huh... well they're assembling the reinforcing steel for the mat foundation at the bottom of the cofferdam yesterday... so you guys can look at these pictures and make your best presumptions as to what is going on or is not going on at the site and assume whatever you want, but the core is about to take shape, so whatever that means... who knows? but if this is merely a fantastic show being put on by shelbourne, then damn... it's an extensive and expensive one for sure and certainly makes you wonder how absurd the idea of a gamble this huge would be... i mean, that is what all you doomsayers think, right? that all this is some kind of great big dog and pony show of some sort?

...also, from what i've seen down there in the last few days, it looks like the steel is ready to take shape for the 7 perimeter columns. harry, you're down there just about every day, all the reinforcement for those footings is in place?

Are they really working on the mat already? I thought they were just finishing the last whaler ring?

And btw, this is a serious forum, that's why were here, I wouldn't be here if people were just constantly posting lolcatz and rickrolling each other...

They're pumping concrete.

I figured that those who feel nothing was happening should be notified.

Repositioning the sump pump head.

Watching the wheelbarrows.

Rebar for whalers is all gone.

The forms for the whalers were also gone, the yellow truck in the overview shot is a concrete pump truck. BVic reported they were pouring later. The plates above are embeded in the concrete so stuff can be welded to it.

Hi everyone,

I want to let you know that the electrical work is almost done at the bottom of the hole. Next are the water pipes and sewer system. And they will reach ground level April-May 2009. From then on it's going to be a floor per week. I know this from one of the main guys from Shellbourn, who I had the pleasure to meet a couple of days ago.
Also, about the Waldorf Astoria it's still not for sure that they'll go up. The developer has had hard time getting financing in the past, so in this hard market it'll be even harder. I'll keep my fingers crossed, because it's beautiful.

I have a neophyte question concerning the underground car garage - how is such a structure vented? That is, how is all the exhaust ported and kept smoothly flowing?

I assume some sort of studies are done concerning circulation of air in the space and how to best introduce and expel the air? Are there separate gratings for induction and expelling of air or common ones like the ones you see on sidewalks, etc.,?

My curiosity is piqued because Calatrava's design seems to infer as much greenery and open space surrounding the building as possible and I am wondering how they will place such ventilation without it being an eyesore or without it robbing the area of many square feet?

I can infer the work going on by watching the rebar (lower L) being formed into whalers, and then disappearing, the long caisson sleeve (in the background) went somewhere also.

Much of the work being done now is on the utilities surrounding the site, some under the roadway, and some out of frame.

Did Shelbourne make an announcement in the last month that I might of missed?

Or perhaps the "More to come..." will take place in September?

-They recently completed the last whaler in the core area.

-Utility/sewer work will be starting soon if it hasn't already

-We should hopefully start to see the structure rise in the 1'st quarter of 2009

What they mean by this:

Does that mean thet they'll just start building up from the hole by Q1 09, or the structure will be above ground in Q1 09?

I think this means that by March 31st they hope to have the formwork for the core resting on the mat, 70 feet below ground level.

But that's just the pessimist in me....
