CINCINNATI, in a Winter Wonderland.

Well it's that time of year folks. You know what I mean.



In celebration of that time of year I thought I'd do a special edition of a USA Sprawl Festival.

Not only will you get pictures of sprawl, you'll get pictures of sprawl in the snow!!

Well, mostly in the snow.

But before we show some snow we have to know that Spring Training is only 3 months away!


At least the Bengals are busy this time of year. Though not for this picture.


But before we get to the sprawl, I just couldn't resist this beauty . . .


And this one, too. This looks like "the hood."


OK, now we get on with the sprawl . . .

This one's for bgwah. Notice the trees planted in the middle of the cul-de-sac. Seattle and Detroit have company.




Some people can walk to their shopping.

There was a HUGE industrial park a ways north of the city. This was just a slice of it.


Snooooowww!!! You can see the tracks of sleds on the school grounds.


Christmas shoppers busy at the mall.


And when the shoppers get home, it all goes here.


More industry and business.




Not many golfers in the snow, I would guess. Though ya never know.


Quaint. A railroad station, a little business district, a cute little church and some cute houses. Looks like a Thomas Kinkade painting!


I'm guessing that's a fake-old building in the middle, not a real one.

Actually I worked in the building on the left years ago, the Cincinnati office of Jacobs Engineering. The building on the right is Western Southern Life Insurance.
What a great thread, we'll be back there for Christmas visitng family, hope to see (just a little) snow.

Thanks. The obelisk thingy in front of the building made it seem like it might be a community college. Can't remember the last time I saw a big obelisk like that in front of an office park. But lots of colleges have big clock towers and the like.

Bond I've looked through many of your sprawl threads, and I find they all leave me feeling scared and empty. Winding roads and cul-de-sacs are horrible way to live. Why oh why can't we go back to the grid!

Anywho, just a little comment (btw, great thread):


Is a suburb along Cincinnati North Mainline suburbs (Glendale). If you follow the same tracks, you'll see other "cutesy towns" such as Wyoming and former Hartwell and Woodlawn. That eventually hooks up with Union Terminal, for past commuting (not anylonger, for obvious reasons).

Most of those new developments have no fenced of gardens... I suppose if you wanna sit out, you have to do it in the presence of everyone else on the road?

I really wouldn't consider that suburban sprawl. It's in Hamilton County, and the top center area is the historic Glendale village square. It used to be Glendale's "downtown" way back in the day. Those homes are HUGE and they have been there for years. It's actually a very charming place.

Yes, it was designed that way. But it's been there for as long as I can remember.

Also, there's a lot more sprawl south of the river....Independence, Cold Spring, Burlington, Florence, etc. You may want to have a look over there for the second installment of this thread.

One final note.....when did you take those shots? Quite literally, the most snow we've had so far this season has only been a dusting. Seriously. We've had a whopping total of .10 of an inch so far - hardly anything to plow or go sledding on.

One final note.....when did you take those shots? Quite literally, the most snow we've had so far this season has only been a dusting. Seriously. We've had a whopping total of .10 of an inch so far - hardly anything to plow or go sledding on.

great series, this one seems rather nastier then than those we've seen as of late. BTW, I would love to see a companion series of streetcar suburbs and new urbanism towns.... Anyways, it huts to look but I can't... look.... away...

It is impossible not to love and hate this series. In one of the pictures I could actually remember driving down the roads in Toledo, Ohio, and seeing the same view. Beauty is genuinely lacking from our cities.

By far the best pic of them all is the one with the rail line running through the 'quaint' settlement with the RR station, church and whatnot...the hills also make it a beauty!

I find it odd that Phoenix is often held up as the model of sprawl, when it's new development tends to be much more dense than sprawl in the eastern half of the country. It's all suburban, sure, but the lots seem to be barely half the size of new construction back east.
