Balconies are starting to go in on the Barrington side. Will try to grab a picture, but it looks nice so far.

That last pic gives almost a tiny bit of NYC setback skyscraper vibe even though the building on the corner isn't part of the development.

Actually tiered skyscrapers aside there are also a lot of older buildings in New York that wrap around shorter corner buildings like this one.

There are still some big holes along Sackville Street but Barrington and Sackville is going to have a pretty urban feel when construction wraps up. Too bad there seems to be nothing happening on the TexPark site.

Are there any spots that are allowed to have a VERY tall building in DT Halifax? What is the maximum height allowed in the new Cogswell area?

With the centre plan, the maximum will be 20 floors, no?

That is ridiculous, if true. Wasn't the original idea of limiting buildings to 20 elsewhere and lopping of heights so that the interchange lands could have some 40+?

Bait and switch. I knew this had the potential of happening.

According to the councillor for the area the Cogswell sites will max out at "ramparts height" under the viewplanes, which he claims is about 27 stories if you are foolish enough to believe him.

Floor counts aren't a great way to look at this since floor height varies. If office and residential buildings are of equal height, the office building will generally have significantly fewer floors.

I seem to recall that 83 m was the tallest height allowed for any existing lot downtown under the ramparts maximum.

The ramparts bylaw is based on the idea of line of site over the ramparts walls, so its effective height limit angles upward and increases the farther you get from the Citadel. But none of the Cogswell sites are very far away, so I doubt the ramparts max for those sites will be much taller than anywhere else downtown.

The ramparts law was brought in sometime around the 1980's when there were already buildings visible from inside the Citadel. So it merely ensures that we have a retro 1970's/80's-style view from inside the Citadel, not an immersive experience with historic fortifications and no modern buildings visible. I think it's a silly rule, and was mostly a stealth way for NIMBYs to block construction downtown.

So true. I often think it might've been cool to see the variety that would emerge from viewplanes-only restrictions. I imagine the tall buildings between the viewplanes would serve to reinforce their links to historic defensive views from the fort.

Nice. Are there stop signs on those streets, or can you do the length of those downhills on a bike at high speed?

Edit: Oops, thought I was in the main Canada section when I clicked on the original post.

All of the intersections except the very last one either give right-of-way to Sackville Street, or are signalized. So if you timed the signals correctly you could indeed bomb down, though you'd have to slam the brakes at the bottom.

It wouldn't be quite as wild as the image suggests, though; the steepness is exaggerated a little bit because the telephoto camera lens tends to flatten images.

Halifax cyclists generally ignore all rules of the road like pesky stop signs and traffic signals, so the answer to your question is "yes", at least until they collide with a bus.

My personal favorite are the bikers that provide me with the single finger hand gesture as they blow a red light and somehow it's my fault for almost hitting them.

*please note* not judging all cyclists, just the ones with a death wish.

Sorry about going a little
