you didn't realize it because they looked normal on your computer.

I think the one at the mid-Wilshire store is by Orrefors; Lalique did the ones at the Beverly Hills and San Francisco/Union Square stores.

It looks to me like the Senator went missing at some point. How else would the side wall of the Dewey have been revealed to receive the painted signage?
(Although it now occurs to me the the signage maybe from before the time the Senator was first built - property records give build dates of 1911 & 1994 for the Dewey and Senator. I found nothing on the old Senator)

I thought Chuckaluck posted details from the other photo to highlight interesting areas. Ir didn't occur to me that the photo might have broken up (?)

Pressed an older computer and monitor into service - which may be part of problem. Different resolutions. Inasmuch as AlbanyNY evidently had no problem viewing the enlargements, I hastily assumed that there were no issues. If not for you mentioning it, I would not have given it a second thought.

FWIW, the older system I am using has what appears to be 20" monitor, can't remember what graphics are employed. Not as an excuse, I recall Prophet did not seem to have any viewing problems. Curious what others who have no viewing problems are using. T2?

Regarding the Senator, it was obvious to me something MAJOR had occurred. Leafing through this thread, the notion of removing building tops, sides and fronts is not unheard of. The indents in the new building may be the best indication of a new build versus a substantial remodel - in the absence of decent aerial or leftside view. T2's theory that the Dewey's advertising predated the Senator makes sense. Hard to tell, but the early version of the Senator seemed closer to the street than the neighboring Dewey. This may have had something to do with its remodel or rebuild.

negative found on ebay (on an old cd of mine dated 2007)

I can make out 'NOT ALLOWED'. Kind of disappointing...I was expecting something a little more, shall we say, profound.

Can anyone make out the rest?

We had this exact same model. This was the snazzy "Cadillac" of incinerators. It was held together by metal straps. The door had a lead counterweight to hold it open when you added your paper trash that was burned on an elevated grill. We see the exterior grill handle at the lower right side of incinerator. You would joggle that handle to release any left-over ash. I could really get a roaring fire going in this backyard wonder. Every week I used a shovel to haul out the ash. It was one of my childhood chores as a six year old kid...my allowance was 25 cents a week.

Engineer Cramp, although well meaning, was wasting his time because these annoying contraptions were outlawed around 1955. Someone may know the exact date.

Some of our neighbors did not have a proper concrete incinerator...they just used an old 55 gal. oil drum. Everyone also had a nasty, newspaper lined, garbage can for the wet stuff. Thanks ER for this post, you certainly come up with cool photos....memories for sure!
