1997 in montreal was a great drinking time, but the peel pub always sucked.

the cock and bull was still prime surly-old-man territory, though, and saint laurent north of pine (prince-arthur, actually) bore no hints of douchery whatsoever. the casa del popolo used to be a place called artishow and it had an unfinished basement where dejected montreal anglos of the era would consume drugs and alcohol. then there was miami... in those days, i wanted the city to get better — and i was right to want that — but my current nostalgia for the era knows no bounds.

kristian gravenor did a great three-part retrospective on montreal in the '90s for openfile, but it seems to be offline now. if you can find it, it's great, as is his blog "coolopolis".

yeah, you can still live out the old divey montreal in loads of neighborhoods (saint henri, the point, vast swathes of east montreal, the edgier parts of rosemont, but that era is over for the mile-ex, plateau, ville marie, saint jacques, atwater, griffintown, etc areas, that's for sure. donezo.

October is going to be fun, with Le Victoire, Le Peterson, Tom Condos and (hopefully) L'Avenue beginning construction!

Passed by this morning and demolition of the stuff they aren't keeping and integrating into the new condo tower is quite advanced now. Wasn't able to get a pic but I'll try in the next couple of days.

In the meantime I have a few pics of other projects to post but as I haven't posted in about 6 years, I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it now from Flickr which I used to use without problems... Maybe it's more complicated because I'm trying go do it from an iPad...?

Nope - no problem uploading to Flickr - it's that I couldn't find the URL to be able to post here. Couldn't find the "share" menu that Flickr FAQ refers to. But I think I may have finally figured it out. Willi give it a try in a few minutes! Thanks for asking!

The best thing that ever happened to this building is the demolition of these 3 top floors.
