It's still a lot easier to have a bus on wheels drive on regular streets. Rail is only on rails - often only *its* rails. A bus can in theory use any roadway.

Ottawa also slowed down the service by not implementing true BRT benefits such as all-door boarding and pre-paid tickets. Imagine how slow the LRT would be if they didn't have that. Using slow moving diesel vehicles didn't help and to increase capacity substantially they could have used double articulated buses. Also they never brought in true level boarding thru station improvements on the road bed itself to make for perfect and faster running level boarding.

Ottawa could have vastly improved the speed, reliability, capacity, and comfort of the Transitway if they wanted to but the got an LRT hard-on because everyone else has one. Now many Ottawans face a longer commute than they had before as the buses allowed for interlining.

I see no reason why Winnipeg should follow Ottawa's path and transform the system into LRT for the sole reason that "everyone else has one".
This. Although yes I am glad that our neighbours in Ottawa now have LRT.

Images of the Lincoln Fields flyover posted on Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson's Twitter. This is where Confederation Line trains will split between the Algonquin College and Moodie branches.

The aerial is outdated, taken sometime in summer, but the other were probably taken a few days apart this month.

Trillium Line Stage 2 progress. Scheduled to open in 2022.

Gladstone Station, a new infill station between Bayview and Carling. It will be one of the few double tracked stations on the system. So far, around 1,500 new units are proposed within 300 meters.

Carling Station. Some significant TOD has been built over the last few years (6 towers, including our new tallest, Claridge Icon), one 30 storey tower is currently under construction and thousands more units are proposed. The new Civic Hospital is also proposed across the street, with construction expected to start in 2024 with a 2027 completion date.

We never hear much about the Eglinton Crosstown on the forum. Here's a video of the surface station progress.

Strange thing to see fairly expansive subway stations and bare-bones surface platforms with very basic (almost useless) shelters all on one line.

^Nice updates all.

Here is an hour long comprehensive update for the Valley Line East here in Edmonton. By the sounds of it, the Dec 2020 opening will be a late summer opening in 2021. This has been expected due to a variety of delays (wet 2019, unexpected bridge foundation issue in the river, COVID etc.)

The estimates for the Barrhaven extension of the O-Train have been released. Here's a breakdown of the system, from Stage 1 to Stage 3.

Stage 1 (2012)

12.5 kilometers - 13 stations
Station spacing - 1 kilometer
Central feature - 2.5 kilometer tunnel with three subway stations
$2.1B or $168 million per kilometer

Stage 2 (2019)

27 kilometers - 16 stations
Station spacing - 1.7 kilometers
Central feature - 3 kilometer cut-and-cover tunnel with two open-air stations
$3B or $111 million per kilometer

Stage 3 Kanata (2018)
11 km - 8 stations
Station spacing - 1.4 km
Central feature - mostly elevated
$1.85B or $168 million per kilometer

Stage 3 Barrhaven (2020)
9.7 km - 7 stations
Station spacing - 1.4 km
Central feature - partially elevated and 3 new grade separations (VIA/Road/O-Train)
$3B or $309 million per kilometer.

Rail613 posted some pictures of Stage 2 Trillium Line.

Walkley, an infill station between the existing Greenboro and Mooney's Bat stations.

South Keys, the first station of the south extension, past Greenboro. This will be the transfer between the Airport link and main Trillium Line. It's also one of two (Greenboro being the second) Trillium transfers to the S/E Transitway.

Work has started on the Bayview station pedestrian bridge that will connect Trinity Centre to the expanded Trillium west platform. The new east platform will rarely be used.

Sorry for all of my speculation guys, I'm just very excited to see this one go up.

Some more Trillium updates.

The relocated Walkley Yards, where the 6 exiting Alstom Coradia LINTs and 7 new Stadler FLIRTs will be stored and maintained. The old fleet of 3 Bombardier Talents are still kicking around as far as I know as the City has not been able to unload them.

Uplands station, part of the airport link.

If you're over 20 years old, you may not live long enough to see that happen.

The only way to make it happen is to change the players at city hall. I hope you do! Good luck!

Two Trillium Line stations could be re-named. The proposed new name for the long standing Carling station is Dow's Lake/Lac Dow for the nearby attraction known for the Tulip Festival, Winterlude, kayaking and canoeing, amongst many other activities. The main reasoning for the name change is that Carling, an 18 km arterial road through the west end of the city, is served by two stations, with Lincoln Fields being the other.

The stations serves thousands of apartments and condos, around a million+ square feet of office space and the proposed new Civic Hospital.

Here's a new rendering. The only difference seems to be the elevator shaft, where a second elevator will be added. The "O" pylon and lantern consistent wit the Confederation Line will likely be added as well.

https://www.railfans.ca/otrain/trill...ions/dows-lake

The other station set to be renamed is Gladstone, an infill station set to open with Trillium Stage 2 in 2022. The proposed name is Corso Italia, for nearby Preston streets' ceremonial name trough Little Italy.

This station will be added between the existing Carling (or Dow's Lake) and Bayview stations. Over a thousand of apartments, many of them affordable, and condos are proposed or u/c within 500 meters.

Consultation available online:

'The City of Edmonton has selected its preferred proponent to design, build and partially finance the 14-kilometre Valley Line West LRT project.

The preferred proponent is Marigold Infrastructure Partners, consisting of team members Colas, Parsons, Standard General, Francl Architecture, Fast & Epp and Stantec.

Marigold Infrastructure Partners and the City will now enter into final discussions, with the contract expected to be finalized by the end of 2020. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2021 and is anticipated to take about five to six years to complete.'

I took a few shots of Stage 2 east progress this weekend.

Here's the Gloucester High School flyover ongoing construction. It's about 700 meters east of the current Blair terminus, where the line will shift from the north side of the highway to the median.
