I love the little formal garden. -but why the need for the fence? It's open on the opposite side.

Today, the site of the garden and north Cudahy building is a junk yard.

I know we've discussed the removal of bodies from the larger Calvary Cemetery (to the east of the Jewish Cemetery), but I don't recall discussing the Jewish Cemetery.

The majority 47 of remains from the old cemetery in Chavez Ravine were moved to the B'nai B'rith Cemetery in May, June and July, 1910. They were all located in the Benevolent section of the new cemetery, as approved by the Board of Directors of the Congregation B'nai B'rith. 48 By the end of 1910, all removals were completed.

For a short period in the 1930's the remaining cemetery property was leased out as a rubbish dump. 59 In 1938, the federal government proposed a Naval Armory adjacent to the vacant cemetery land. 60 This adjacent land included the portion purchased by the City of Los Angeles in 1905 from the Hebrew Benevolent Society. Arrangements were made and the city conveyed its land, by grant deed to the federal government. 61 On November 30, 1942, a "Us Pendens" action was taken by the federal government concerning the remain­ing vacant cemetery land. 62 On April 29, 1943, the Jewish Social Service Bureau, with the approval of the Jewish Wel­fare Federation Board, sold the remaining cemetery property to the federal government for $4,200.00. 63 Final judgment was on August 23, 1943. 64 This ended Jewish ownership of the cemetery property except for the subsurface oil, mineral and gas rights which are retained by the Jewish Family Service. 65 These oil rights still bring in a small amount of royalties annually.

Yes, but is it the famous Farmer's Market? I don't recall that type of sign being on the premises.
What does it say under Farmer's Market?....if it says 'shops', then it probably is the iconic landmark. (actually, after I squinted long enough, I think it says 'stores')

Now that I think about it a little longer, since the rest of the vintage slides were of tourist attractions, I'd say you're probably correct T2.


I've been looking for the sign in question. (but this aerial pre-dates the 1952 slide by at least a decade I'd say) I really need to find a more recent one.

If we locate the sign, we should be able to figure out the store in the foreground with the 'Dell entrance' and _ _ _ _ _ MAN'S SHOP sign. (probably 'SPORTSMAN')

USC.... The KD house was at 919 West 28th... the home of Frederick C. Howes, a county assesor, and later art collector Paul R. Mabury, who died there in 1939. It's gone--

ER....this is Victor Hugo's Restaurant in Laguna Beach. I was there once, long time ago. Nice place with white table cloths, as I recall.

I believe this postcard shows the same green awning with stripes that you can see in the 1952 slide.

And CBD's second photograph shows the oval windows (there's one visible in the 1952 slide).

Although it's an iconic shape, it's easy to overlook b/c no neon :-(

It's on the Fairfax side of Farmers' Market by the parking entrance and has no extra lettering on the street side these days (although it did at least until last August):

This would be more in tune with the times.....California casual.

The Victor Hugo's type of place probably doesn't fit in today's mix of restaurants. Most all of the white-table-cloth places have closed or been re-born as something else.

I didn't know 'Now Voyager' used images of the Laguna Victor Hugo GW. That makes me want to see that scene again.
Is this where Paul Henreid lights two cigarettes in his mouth and then gives one to Bette?.....or was that in an earlier scene on the ocean liner? I can't remember.
