Something feels weird that they would draw so much attention to rebuilding an old bar to the point of building a rather good looking apartment building on top. Nick's was a hangout for generations of New Orleanians, and drew people from all over the city. But if they're planning on trading on the nostalgia for the place I think they're going to be disappointed. It won't be the same place at all, but 14 years later nobody who used to frequent it would want to go to a dive bar anyway. So the best they can hope for is to tap into the market created by Bayou Beer/Wine Garden, Finn McCool's etc. that's made Mid-City such a nightlife center. How that ties into building some presumably high-end apartments on top of the place I don't know.

City Park eyes redevelopment of overgrown former golf course, the park's last major unprogrammed space

City Park has seen a flurry of high-profile additions in the last few years, with the recent opening of the Louisiana Children’s Museum and the expansion of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden adding more energy, visitors and traffic to the southern end of the park.

But park leaders and designers are taking a different approach to the future of the Wisner Tract, the last major portion of the park still to be redeveloped since Hurricane Katrina.

At just under 100 acres, the property between Interstate 610 and Harrison Avenue along Wisner Boulevard is a former golf course that has been reclaimed by trees and brush. Its lagoon and disconnected pathways have become a haven for locals looking for a quiet, natural setting removed from the crowds attracted to the park’s busier areas.

City Park’s master plan designates the Wisner Tract for “passive recreation,” which rules out sports like baseball and soccer but would allow for running, disc golf and other low-impact activities. Any programming or development is supposed to have minimal impact on the natural habitat, allowing for educational uses and space for yoga or meditation.

Bob Becker, the park's chief executive officer, said a team led by nationally known consultants at Design Workshop will focus on retaining much of what people already like about the space.

“The vast majority of it, we want to be a contemplative, natural environment,” he said.

If the first of two public-input sessions is any indication, visitors who have come to appreciate the untamed character of the Wisner Tract will make themselves heard throughout the planning process.

Make it a permanent home for Jazzfest .. it needs to move if you ask me.. way too crowded location and the opportunities to expand offerings here would help secure the festival to be competitive for years to come

I think the owners are saying because of the size of the building next door they feel the larger building will fit in better. It seems the business plan is to rely heavily on the medical district for customers as well as seminars and other business lunches

Surprise, surprise neighbors are fighting Wisznia on his Two Saints development.

The article does confirm that the entertainment venue Wisznia is proposing is Punch Bowl Social and that he is working to close a deal that would bring the same type of "experiential retailer" to the ground floor space at The Garage.

it would be nice if the news would quantify this opposition.. its just a couple of loud mouths that hate change but dont speak for the majority of the neighborhood... so tired of them presenting these few people as some kind of substantial opposition. that said theres really not anything they can do to stop these developments since they are in compliance with zoning of the area

Glad to see a ground breaking date for that announced... still nothing about the canopy... yikes.. surely some lawsuits will be flying soon in regards to that thing

A WWII employee was at my work the other night and I asked about the canopy. She said its still coming along. Apparently the problem has been when the pieces were manufactured in Mexico they cut everything into pieces so they've had to assemble everything on site at the museum which is causing unexpected holdups. $5mil over budget but she said everyones excited to see it done, should become an iconic addition to the skyline that was worth the headaches.

wow.. well i certainly hope its done this decade lol .. on another note hwne you pass by the campus its clear that pieces of the canopr are sitting where the next pavilion goes.. if ground breaking i snext month they are going to need to get moving lol also im assuming someone besides the museum is eating that 5 million overrun

I would think it does since it cant sell directly in its stores in louisiana , you still have to order online . So would just be letting people experience the product

Best quote in the article is when one of the opposition members "dismissed the residential portion of the project as a boarding house" lol. You really give away your age when you say boarding house with implied negative connotations. Most people born after 1975 have no idea what a boarding house even is. Leave it to those grouchy warehouse district retirees to not understand the co-living concept SMH.

Honestly have you ever been to one of these meetings? everyone should go once to understand what developers have to put up with. its literally usually three or 4 people and they are bats**t insane and you have to deal with them. unfortunately, i think im the only person who bothers to show up to these things and say positive stuff, but its always four or five nimbys and the news acts like thats representative of the local area. theres one nutball that shows up telling everyone they are going to hell because hotels are the devil and another socialist nut saying any new development is bad for the homeless.. yes thats the crap you have to listen to... and the news will give them a platform .. not once has a paper or blog asked me for a quote at these things because they sell drama .. its depressing sometimes for sure

I just think its funny when it is residents of the Warehouse District or French Quarter who act like they are some quaint neighborhood association living in some quiet single-family neighborhood. And they act like any type of commercial use would be so out of place.

For real .. especially the warehouse district which wasnt even a neighborhood that people lived in before 1980s but was in fact you know a neighborhood of warehouses
