Hotel Indigo:
Hotel Indigo is working on the signs they will install on the building exterior. Expect to see a 12 foot / 3.7 metre tall blade sign on the corner, with "Hotel Indigo," and a "Hotel Indigo" sign on the awning at the Fourth Street entrance. We could see signage, soon!

419 Spruce Street: Built!
This project is now completed. It is the adaptive-reuse of the former Radio Center Building into spaces for two arts groups. The Little Theatre is located on the second floor and they have office space and two rehearsal spaces, including a smaller space that can be used for classes. The N.C. Black Repertory Company is on the ground floor, with a meeting space, two rehearsal halls, five offices, and a box office in the lobby. The building is designed to encourage collaboration, which could lead to both groups performing together.

Carolina Athletic Performance:
Completion for this 120,000 square foot sports training and hosting facility is now set for April 2019.

Hotel Indigo:
Congratulations to developer Simon Burgess. He is on a national list of executives to watch in 2019 for his massive two hotel, office, residential, restaurant, bar, and park development in downtown Winston-Salem, which includes this hotel. It's seen as a major transformative project worthy of national recognition. This past week, workers started restoring the original terrazzo flooring in the lobby.

Hyatt Place Hotel:
This project has now resumed construction. They will construct a floor of underground stacked parking, a hotel lobby with restaurant above the underground parking floor, and office space for a bank headquarters. This will be reinforced concrete. Above the office space, workers will build hotel room floors, constructing the elevator cores and stair towers. The hotel will use modular construction from a downtown Winston-Salem-based modular construction company. They will build the hotel rooms in a factory, send them to the site, and use a crane to stack them above the concrete floors. This should take seven months. Finally, workers will clad the structure. The 9-storey Hyatt Place Hotel made a short appearance in a Bisnow article, allowing you to read about modular construction. This will be the first Hyatt hotel to use modular construction.

Crawford Condominiums:
Workers are extending utilities to the site before the concrete pour. Yes, work has started on this project! It will be a 9-storey fully furnished building, providing a temporary place to stay for executives moving to Winston-Salem. The companies moving the executives to Winston-Salem will pay to rent the residences.

Bailey South:
This project is a two-storey former power plant building from 1926 converted into retail/restaurant spaces and a new-construction six-storey office building, for tech and creative companies, built on the back side of the 1926 building. The new six-storey office building is designed to match the 1926 building it will be attached to.

We now have a name for this project, which is an adaptive reuse of an old warehouse complex into a soccer complex.

Hyphen Hops Brewing Company & Mixed-use:
And this project is now on our under construction list. The owner of the new brewery is Jason Kohrt. This should be an interesting adaptive-reuse project. The brewery will grow its own hops on site. The project also includes apartments and other retail. Winston-Salem always has two or three craft breweries under construction. We complete two and begin construction on another.

Broad Branch Distillery:
Broad Branch Distillery will appear on national TV, on the Discovery Channel. It should bring more visitors to downtown, to see the distillery and maybe visit other attractions.

River Run International Film Festival:
USA Today selected Winston-Salem's River Run International Film Festival as one of "10 Amazing Film Festivals Worth Traveling For." Moviemaker Magazine also selected it as one of the "Top 50 Film Festivals Worldwide Worth the Entry Fee." River Run is April 4-14 and is an Academy Award qualifying film festival. It's a great chance to see movies and attend events in some of your favorite historic buildings in downtown Winston-Salem. They also have free movies in Bailey Park, in downtown's IQ District.

If only one of the proposed demolitions happened this past week... this sounds like music to listen to while looking at something being demolished. I just remembered... The old Interstate 40 (East-West Expressway) is being demolished! Maybe I can find a photograph of it to post with this music.

311 East Third:
Chicago-based Ventas will invest $1.5 billion for 10 new developments by Wexford Science + Technology, including a new 11-12 storey building in downtown Winston-Salem's IQ District. The building, at Third Street, Fourth Street, and Patterson Avenue, will have space for tech companies, underground parking below the building, and retail space facing Bailey Park. No ground breaking date is set for this project, but it will be under construction in the next 24 months. Actual construction will take 18-24 months. No tenants were announced.

Kaleideum Science Museum:
Look for commissioners to vote on their strategy to provide $30 million to the new downtown science museum. Construction is expected to start within the next 12 months.

Bailey Power Plant Complex:
Cugino Forno Neapolitan Pizza moved their opening back to March 1, 2019. The general contractor provided an update.

Radar Brewing Company:
Radar Brewing Company will open on Ninth Street. Look for a three-barrel system with the ability to double their capacity. Radar will have 20 taps and a 3,000 square foot beer garden. They will also offer cider and wine. This new brewery should open in July.

Wake Forest School of Engineering Expansion:
Wake Forest University is expanding their downtown engineering school, in the IQ District, by roughly 25,000 square feet. They are planning classrooms, an integrated lab, a project studio, a makerspace, a traditional lab, an innovation lab, an auditorium, common space, and other labs for this expansion. In the next steps, they will design the spaces and begin construction.

Perkins will construct a new office building with retail at Eighth and Trade streets. Landmark Builders will be the general contractor. Few details are available at this time.

Winston Lake Park Improvements:
You said yes to the bonds and now the projects begin! Steele Group Architects was hired to design a boardwalk around the lake, a new strollway, a new pier, and new restrooms.

Salem Lake Park Improvements:
You said yes to the bonds and now this project can begin! An open-air pavilion, a new launch area for boats, a soft launch area for canoes and kayaks, and new picnic shelters are planned. Norwood Architecture & Design is the architect for this project.

Quarry Park Phase II:
You said yes to the bonds and now Stimmel Associates will begin design work on Phase II! Look for picnic shelters, a new playground, and they will work to create more shade for summer days in this popular park.

Thanks for the updates! It's nice to be reminded of all the great stuff going on with BB&T's recent announcement. The continued concentration of corporate HQs in a few select cities is frustrating, to say the least.

I really do feel bad for Winston. Downtown WS is one of my favorites. The city had all the tools to be bigger and more important than what it currently is, just lacked leaderships.

Prepare yourself for this: BB&T only has 2,134 jobs in all of Forsyth County! A number that includes branch employees in the suburbs. Wells Fargo has more employees in Winston-Salem. BB&T has around four office buildings in Winston-Salem and only two of those buildings are downtown. They just purchased Republic Mutual Insurance's downtown HQ a year or two ago and won't renew any of the existing tenants' leases. They have never built anything in Winston-Salem and actually have fewer employees than they had just a few years ago. The merger is expected to increase the number of jobs to a number as low as 3,000 and maybe high as 13,000, depending on who you talk to. The part of the bank with the highest employment will be based in downtown Winston-Salem. If the merger adds thousands more jobs to downtown Winston-Salem, it's a win for both N.C., cities and could further add to the projects posted in this thread. There is already talk of a housing boom from Atlanta residents moving to Winston-Salem next year.

It doesn't seem like it was that long ago, when downtown Winston-Salem had the nation's 11th and 12th largest banks, side-by-side, on Second Street.

This was once one of the nation's wealthiest and fastest growing cities. The fastest growing in the south (by %) at one point. In 1920, when Winston-Salem was side-by-side with Detroit on the Census' top ten list of fastest growing cities (by %), there was a flood of wealthy businessmen from across the country wanting to buy and invest in the city. Though the city was gaining national attention for population growth, factories were creating more jobs than the number of people moving here. It led to companies poaching employees, unions, and wage wars. Business leaders invested in the best hospitals, parks, schools, etc., in the southeast, in both white and black neighborhoods, to make the city more attractive for workers and there was a desire to be world class, as a showplace. Businesses would take trains into neighboring states, promising jobs to anyone who boarded the train. Around 1927, some of the city's prominent businessmen had a plan to reduce the number of companies moving to the city and try to retake control. Later, the company that became mega-conglomerate RJR Nabisco (once #14 on the Fortune 500) would threaten to move their headquarters, if city leaders attempted to bring other large employers to the area. In the 1920s, city leaders thought Winston-Salem could become "THE" major city in the southeast and had little reason to doubt it could happen, but those are just two of the many actions that prevented it from happening.


Saved file - Unknown?

Notice that Winston-Salem's population density in the early 1920s was close to 7,000 ppsm. Two-to-three times higher than the other sizable cities in the state at that time. I think it peaked at around 7,500 ppsm. I think value of factory products peaked at #22 a few years later? The port was a massive International Rail Port, created through an act of Congress, with heavy trade between Winston-Salem and Europe and the Middle East. The rail port was located where the second phase of downtown's IQ District is planned, today. It had bridges and tunnels over and under it. It also had staging areas (where trains wait to enter and leave the port), which acted as mini-ports, near WSSU and Smith Reynolds Airport. The airport was multi-modal before that became a thing.

In all lines of civic development the city is equipped for a city of 100,000 population. There are 7 building and loan associations. Winston-Salem has two large impounding lakes with a storage capacity of 1,000,000,000 gallons, while the daily consumption is only 7,000,000 gallons. There are 179 miles of water mains, 179 miles of sewer main, 90 miles each of paved streets and side-walks. CIVIC FACTS--Winston-Salem has an excellent Country Club and golf course. The best polo field in the State is here, as well as the largest baseball grounds and buildings. RESORTS--Hanging Rock includes 9,000 acres of fine mountain scenery. The Methodist Protestant Church is erecting a modern summer assembly plant here, capable of entertaining 400 guests. Roaring Gap has an altitude of 3,000 feet and embraces 3,000 acres. A modern summer resort with all amusements and a large lake is being developed here. Moore's and Piedmont Springs are noted resorts nearby. INDUSTRY-- Winston-Salem is pre-eminently an industrial city, ranking in the forefront of the large cities of the country in value of factory products. From an industrial standpoint Winston-Salem leads all the Southern cities except Baltimore, in the value of factory products. Winston-Salem ranks 37th in the United States in the value of factory products. She produces $41,000,000 more than Los Angeles, Cal.; $87,000,000 more than Atlanta, Ga.; $65,000,000 more than Fall River, Mass.; $75,000,000 more than the combined production of Richmond and Roanoke, Va. The Southern Railway handles more freight at Winston-Salem than is handled from any other point on its entire system. Winston-Salem pays the Federal Government over $100,000,000 Internal Revenue Tax annually and is the seventh largest Port of Entry in the United States, notwithstanding it is 200 miles inland. OPPORTUNITY-- Winston-Salem's past and present accomplishments are great, but there are still unlimited possibilities here. The Winston-Salem Real Estate Board will be glad to show them to you. Winston-Salem is the largest industrial city south of Baltimore. Here are located the largest blanket factory in the South, the largest factory in the United States for manufacturing men's knit underwear, and the largest bedroom furniture factory in the State. Winston-Salem has the largest tobacco factory in the world and is the second largest market for leaf tobacco in the State.

757 North Apartments:
Philadelphia-based PMC Property Group has purchased 757 North Apartments in downtown's IQ District. Due to the success of their previous project, The Residences at the R.J. Reynolds Building, PMC Property Group has looked for other opportunities in downtown Winston-Salem. The Residences at the R.J. Reynolds Building is the tallest residential building in the Triad at 23 floors. At this time, nothing will change at 757 North Apartments. PMC Property Group is still looking for more opportunities to develop or purchase in downtown.

Winston Junction:
They are building a velodrome for indoor bicycle racing, an axe throwing bar, a clothing store, and a market at Winston Junction. Workers are also constructing an elevated outdoor area with a skyline view, just in time for Spring! This is one of the more exciting entertainment projects under construction in downtown. While this is currently an adaptive-reuse project, they are applying for permits to build a new construction expansion to the historic building. Look for a late-night restaurant and yoga as part of a next phase, according to someone at the WSTB Forum.

Liberty Park:
Construction is set to begin in Spring 2020 on the Kaleideum projects, including this park. This is the full demolition of an early-1970s concrete plaza, and the brutalist office space below it, for a new park. The park will become a grand entrance to the Liberty Plaza office tower and Kaleideum Science Museum. Liberty Park and Merschel Park will be across Third Street from each other.

Merschel Park:
We have renderings of the redesigned park! Completion for this park is set for Summer 2020. Yes, it is currently under construction! The park will hide a large underground automated parking garage for the three buildings on the eastern end of the site. The under construction Hyatt Place Hotel will have a restaurant & bar fronting the park, with outdoor dining space in the park. The park will also have restrooms and fire pits for cooler weather.

And the opening date has moved to April 28. A little over nine weeks away. It still seems too soon. I don't think they can open without the underground parking (see Merschel Park updates each week) and they haven't done anything to the building's two front facades, other than the ground floor.

Demolition of the former Security Life & Trust Headquarters Building is scheduled for May. The Security Life & Trust Building was North Carolina's first Modernist office building when it opened in 1951. Downtown Streetscape:
Would you like to make suggestions for the downtown streetscape plan? Attend the next meeting at Footnote, next to Bookmarks Bookstore in downtown. Be there on February 26, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm and from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. There will be a presentation and you can share any ideas you may have to improve both the appearance of the streetscape and the downtown cycling and pedestrian experience.

East-West Expressway Demolition:
This project could be completed as early as December 21, 2019 or as late as April 9, 2020. They are trying to complete this in December or January, but the weather could slow demolition and construction. The North Carolina Department of Transportation will know the completion date later this year. It's still exciting to see it "could" be completed in December, if the weather is good. The project is currently ahead of schedule.

Bailey Power Plant Complex:
Workers installed two sandstone wood-fired ovens, at Cugino Forno Neapolitan Pizza, each weighing more than 7,000lbs. The ovens are imported from Naples, Italy and maintain 1,000-degree temperatures. This will be the second Neapolitan pizza restaurant in downtown Winston-Salem. With 1,000+ degree ovens, it's a perfect restaurant for one of the retail spaces of a former coal-fired power plant. It also opens to an outdoor entertainment space called The Coal Pit. The restaurant should open this weekend, if they are still on schedule!

Green Street Pedestrian Bridge:
Construction will start on this bridge in May. This will be a dual tied-arch suspension bridge. The first of its kind in North Carolina. It will light-up at night, as a decorative feature on the downtown skyline and for pedestrian and cycling safety.

Broad Street Bridge:
Completion is set for May 2020. They will reduce the number of lanes to only one in each direction, with a turning lane in the middle. The new bridge will have a bike lane in each direction and wider sidewalks. Look for decorative lighting on the bridge.

This cycling and pedestrian bridge will reconnect downtown with Old Salem, Salem College, Piedmont International University, and UNC School of the Arts. It's part of the city's cycle tracks system. They expect to complete this bridge this Summer! Yes, this Summer! They are currently working on the substructure. The new bridge will have a variety of plantings, from small bushes and flowers to colorful garden trees. This bridge will also have decorative lighting and lighting for pedestrian/cycling safety.

Winston-Salem - A Job Growth Center:
According to Mayor Allen Joines, Winston-Salem's job growth was 5,300 net new jobs last year. That is more than the Greensboro High Point Metro Area, which has two of the state's top-10 largest cities, and almost as many net new jobs created as the Durham Chapel Hill Metro Area, which has Duke, UNC, and Research Triangle Park. It places Winston-Salem nationally among the top cities of its size in job creation. New Jobs / Growing Energy Tech:
Winston-Salem is growing its energy / smart grid tech cluster and the latest to join is energy engineering company Black and Veatch. They have signed a lease at the One West Fourth office tower on downtown's restaurant row, just a block or two away from the IQ District. Hotel Indigo:
Last week, we explored a finished hotel room. This week, we have photographs of the lobby, too! Workers are currently installing the EIFS cladding over the stair tower. They will also install this on the rough area on the building's west facade. This was accepted since the EIFS will be hidden by the Hyatt Place Hotel and Crawford Condominiums to be constructed on the neighboring sites. The developer said Hotel Indigo will be completed at the end of this month (19 days!).

Merschel Park:
I do believe the rain is delaying this project. Rain is causing mud to reach Third Street, which will be corrected by the end of this week. This park will have a $225,000 sculpture, rising around 30 feet / 9.2 metres in height, as the centerpiece. According to City Beat, artists being considered include Abigail DeVille, Judith Shea, and Simone Leigh.

Hoots Brewing Company on Trade:
STITCH Design Shop will be the architect for this new downtown craft brewery project, located at Trade & Seventh streets (Former Test Pattern space), across from the ARTC Theatre. The architects will enlarge the windows and upgrade the restrooms. This brewery space won't have a kitchen. Food at this brewery space will be provided by the neighboring restaurants. The brewery is currently starting the permitting process and will begin construction, soon!

8 West Third Street:
The conversion of an historic Class B office building into a Class A office building for creative and tech companies. This is the oldest steel frame skyscraper in North Carolina. It was originally Wachovia Bank's headquarters until 1965.

Egger North American Headquarters:
Egger purchased six local homes for their employees. The office building in their first phase will open in Spring of this year, as the company's North American headquarters, and will have spaces for architects and designers to learn about Egger's products and to share new ideas and innovations. The first phase will cost $300 million. The project has three phases and when finished will cost nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars.

Winston Junction:
The market at Winston Junction will open March 30, with vendors selling food, arts/crafts, goods, beverages, and plants. Some of the under construction entertainment venues, offices, and retailers at Winston Junction will open at a later date.

According to the developer, Hotel Indigo will open April 7 (two weeks from today!) and the Sir Winston Restaurant, along with the wine bar on the second floor, will open a few days earlier. Crawford Condominiums:
This building is described as a 9 1/2-storey building with 24 residential units and a restaurant called The Restaurant on Fourth, with indoor seating and seating in Merschel Park. The restaurant will have floor-to-ceiling glass for a dramatic view of Merschel Park, both inside and at their outdoor seating.

Merschel Park:
All utilities are in place for the new park. The city has officially sent out a request for qualifications for artists interested in designing a major art work to be placed in the center of this park. If you're interested, you must notify the city by May 10. The city will select interested artists by June 28 and they will submit their proposals by September. The winning art work will be selected in Fall 2019 and it will be installed in the park in Fall 2020. The artwork can include water and light.

Hyphen Hops Brewing Company & Mixed-use:
This project now includes a New Orleans-themed restaurant and a vendor market, to open around October 2019. Food for the brewery will be prepared in a commercial kitchen and served from a 1960s Volkswagen Bus converted into a stationary food truck. I guess it's a faux food truck? Look for a live music area at the new brewery complex. The number of apartments in this project has increased to 244. Fourth Elm is the general contractor for this massive adaptive-reuse project.

Bailey Power Plant Complex:
Cugino Forno Neapolitan Pizza had an unadvertised soft opening on Sunday (3/17) for friends and family. This space is now completed and anyone can visit. Be sure to visit the next time you're at Bailey Power Plant and The Coal Pit. In other Bailey Power Plant news, the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce has signed a lease at Bailey Power Plant for a satellite office. This office will collaborate on initiatives designed to accelerate the city's innovation and entrepreneurial economies. "Utilized by several staff members, the workspace will allow for more connections to be made and for ideas to flow more rapidly."

Axe Club of America will open in mid-to-late May. They are a member of the National Axe Throwing Federation and adhere to NATF rules. Look for a variety of craft beers. For $20, you can axe throw for an hour. It's $40 for two-and-a-half hours. They will also have competitions and will host group events. If you're not an axe thrower, you can watch others axe throw.

Stevens Center Renovation:
Remember this project? A bipartisan State House bill will provide $42.2 million for this renovation project in the state fiscal year of 2019-2020, which starts July 1, 2019. The university must complete the renovations by June 30, 2023 to use the money. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) said renovations will take 18 months. Robert A.M. Stern is the architect. They don't have a general contractor at this time. We have to wait to see if the House Bill passes, first. This project will restore the exterior of the building, including recreating the original theatre signage and marquee. The university is also seeking private funding for equipment and technology. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts would like to create an Arts Quarter on the western side of downtown to compliment the Innovation Quarter (IQ District), for research and tech companies, on the eastern end of downtown. UNCSA Chancellor Lindsay Bierman said "it is one of my top strategic priorities to help drive economic development in the city of Winston-Salem. I know that the arts drive economic growth, that they can be a catalyst for economic growth. We're developing plans to expand and diversify our programming and attract more people downtown and to Forsyth County." If this is approved, work could start this year and be completed in 2021.

Grubb Properties secured financing for this 224-unit apartment & retail project through their new 2019 Opportunity Fund. The developer is currently applying for a 42-year fixed-rate HUD loan. Demolition of a vacant office building at the site, constructed in 1951, will begin next month, allowing this project to move forward.

The East facade, facing Bailey Park, is improved, with a much better window design on the new six-storey office building and they will keep the original concrete facade of the historic 1926 power plant building and they will keep the steel windows. Novant Health will begin a $181.4 million renovation of their Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. Winston-Salem-based Novant Health will renovate patient rooms and construct new patient rooms with the latest technology; make sustainability improvements to building systems; a major renovation of the Women & Children's Institute & Innovation Center; expansions to neurology and stroke care, heart and vascular center, and oncology; and an expanded kitchen.

311 East Third:
Charlotte-based Atrium Health will make downtown Winston-Salem's IQ District the center of their medical research, bringing their medical research funding, their research partner offices, and thousands of scientific and analytics jobs to downtown Winston-Salem. This is expected to increase the amount of NIH (National Institutes of Health) funded research in downtown Winston-Salem and further the construction boom currently underway in Winston-Salem's downtown area. Atrium will invest in a translational research and population health center that could become the lead tenant in this new 11-12 storey building. Dr. Julie Ann Freischlag said, "Atrium officials have expressed interest in putting some of their people here as they view the quarter (downtown Winston-Salem's IQ District / Innovation Quarter) as a fascinating think tank. We believe we will be able to grow our research here with increased employment opportunities. They (Atrium Health) would like to bring companies and people up here because they think it is just an amazing place." Downtown Winston-Salem's IQ District will become the scientific research hub of nearly 50 hospitals and over 1,300 care centers in multiple states.

The city has approved funding to upgrade the football field, the seats, and many other items in the Art Deco football stadium.

Development Opportunity:
Goler Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church is for sale. This church is located in downtown's IQ District, surrounded by biotech offices, tech company headquarters, university classrooms, and apartments. From what I've heard and read, it appears as if the church is closing and selling all of their property? There are a few offers. It would make an awesome performing arts venue, live music venue, an interesting brewery or could be converted into office space or residences or another church could buy it. Historic tax credits are available. I would like to see the church restored and the newer building demolished for something more urban. If you're interested in reusing this beautiful historic church, call: (336) 724-1715 It's over a century old and the asking price for the entire site, including two buildings and an open space, is $3.5 million. I'm guessing the development team building the tech company offices will likely make an offer to land bank it? They work to acquire any blocks that become available in their innovation district. If so, they may restore it and build new structures around it? I guess we shall see what happens. Make an offer, if you're interested.

Brookstown Apartments:
100 North Broad Street is under contract to real estate investor Chaucer Creek Capital and developer DPJ Residential. The purchase price for the site is $4 million. They will demolish all of the existing structures, close both Brookstown Avenue and Green Street through their development site, and build a $40 million 5-storey apartment building. Sadly, it won't have any retail spaces. I think it should have at least one or two retail spaces, since it's across from the downtown ballpark. Completion is set for late-2021 or early-2022. It is expected to be very high-end, with luxury prices. They do have a requirement to build a new city park and donate it to the city. Though demolition is involved, nothing there is worth preserving. This is an improvement. No renderings at this time.

Fishel Steel Building:
Converting the old industrial Fishel Steel Company Building, in the downtown Arts District, into modern office space. I think this is our first photograph update for this project? This building has rail lines in the floor and massive overhead cranes! It should make an awesome office building for a creative or tech company. I think plans call for a recessed entrance where the black wooden door is located?

Forsyth County Office Building: Cancelled
This project is cancelled. The county decided to add two or three floors to another proposed project instead of constructing this building. The site will be used to construct a proposed linear park, creating a view corridor between the bank towers in the Financial District and the proposed courthouse.

First Baptist Church Restoration:
Joe Bircher is the architect for this project. Workers are making repairs to cracks in the terracotta, replacing rusted piping, and repairing missing mortar.

Carolina Athletic Performance:
As we reach the end of April, I'm checking-up on several projects scheduled for completion this Spring. There aren't any construction photographs from this year, for this project. I did discover they have plans for a massive future expansion. I don't think this project will open this month, though? I'm moving the opening date to Summer 2019.

Science & Office Building:
Why is it so difficult to find photographs of this project? I've searched for the past three weeks to find an update for this project. It's a 7-storey building fronting the John Gold Expressway, in walking distance of Union Station, surrounded by college students. This building should make regular appearances here. I did find the name of the General Contractor: Rodgers Construction. No new photographs found.

Forsyth County Courthouse:
They are still trying to decide between a 250,000 square-foot 8-storey building or a 306,000 square-foot 9-storey building. The 8-storey building would have up to 24 courtrooms and a skybridge connecting to office space in the Forsyth County Government Center. The 9-storey building would be more secure and have all of the space in one building, allowing the building to meet future needs for many years. The building in the renderings below is a 140 foot tall structure, with 16-foot 8-inch tall court floors and 14-foot office floors. It will have a steel skeleton. If it is scaled-up to 9 floors, it could reach around 155 feet in height. Most of the people who will work in the building are asking for the larger and taller building, so they won't out-grow it three years after it opens. They are looking into creating a linear park that would stretch from the city's tallest skyscraper to the new courthouse. It is worth noting that an electrical bank may prevent them from building a tunnel between the courthouse and the detention center. They will have a beautiful lobby and a multi-escalator open space, with plenty of light and nice views from the windows, between the courtrooms. CBRE Heery is the design architect for this project.

Alternative Transportation:

Union Station & Streetcar Yard:
According to the General Contractor, the existing windows were restored using Pilkington Spacia vacuum insulated glass from Japan, making Winston-Salem's Union Station the second installation of this product in the United States. Learn more about it in this video. You'll notice dots on the windows in the video and remember seeing them on the glass in previous updates.

I think most of the current work is upfitting office and retail spaces? It won't officially open until those spaces are completed. If this is among your favorite projects and you would like to tour the building, the city is planning a grand opening for this building when the upfits are completed.
