I haven't been to Chicago since September of 2009, but Aqua was already up and I greatly appreciated, loved this building. Of course, I'm the biggest sucker for any building with a curve in it.

/\ I think people should see Vista in person before casting final judgment to be honest. i also believe that the blow through is not as big a factor and will grow on us in time and only stands out so much because it's new to Chicago!

I think some of the execution choices come into play here too - and the fact that it's a 2-story gap in the continuation of the tower at its tallest, widest spot. Not the cleanest looking in either of those regards...

But I still think the engineering of it is cool and it looks fine enough from far away: https://www.instagram.com/p/CBVUhpWJy87/

You haven’t been here in almost 11 years?!

Dude, we’ve built an entire city since then

Chicago has sooooo many buildings with curves, and Vista is just the latest among them: Trump, Aqua, River Point, One Museum Park, Lake Point Tower, Marina City I & II, etc. You should visit more often!

Visited Sunday after 7 months away and thought the river side of Vista was stunningly beautiful. Looking up and down the canyon from the corner of Michigan and Whacker I don’t think there’s a more attractive display of modern architecture in the world.

Interesting, I wonder if the hotel flag will change now that Vista is out of the picture?

Too late to pivot to short term rentals?

^With or without - not a huge difference either way. But if I had to pick, put me down in the column as thinking it looks better WITH the blow-through. Looks more interesting, slightly more uniform and somehow more imposing with the blow-through.

It won't be because that would be illegal as it stands. (assuming you are referring to the blow-through)

For me, the blow-throughs aren't bad or great, I've just kind of accepted that the actual build out of a lot of these architectural concepts are going to have some real-world functional elements that kind of ground the building in reality.

But with all the glass and its departure from the renderings I can understand why people really don't like it too. I guess it just doesn't really bother me

I agree that it is really beautiful in person. The mechanical louver strips are a lot less noticeable. I think they just look more pronounced in photos.
