I thought I was seeing things when I first came across this apartment building in Silver Lake.

It made me wonder if the unusual design was influenced by the grandiose sets of 1920s Hollywood.

My first thought was the 'Thief of Bagdad' (1924); perhaps the architect had driven by the set. -and was duly inspired.

Twelve x 1bd/1ba; built 1927 is all I found.

I really like that the massing is strictly symmetrical, but the details are anything but. It's charming, but could use a more imaginative paint job (nicely kept though).

Here's an excerpt from an article dated 2004.

"Nestled among towering cedar trees, the stone barn with it's gabled roof, brick arches and cobblestone chimneys was built in 1914.
True to it's builder, it looks like something from the French countryside, not the California foothills. The barn's 3-foot-thick walls
housed tons of harvested grapes before they were carted to the family winery at Main and Mesnager streets in Los Angeles."

Since we see some of Pasadena today, here's the now closed Pasadena Ice Skating rink.

My neighbor Jerry Black and I skated here once in about 1963. One thing I do recall is that they had a strict dress code: NO Levi's. I thought that was rather cold.

That is south of the Ave 26 bridge, one of the few bridges of the Arroyo Seco Parkway that actually pre-date the Parkway itself. I drive that freeway often---when there's no traffic. If I wanna get downtown from South Pas, I will often just take Huntington to Mission to Broadway... or the Gold Line.

Where does the Arroyo Seco Parkway parallel the Los Angeles River? So that's not the L.A. river?

Speaking of Huntington Dr... Sopas did they demolish the old PE bridge on Huntington yet...the last time I was out in south pas(and took the route you take to downtown) it seemed like they were getting ready to get rid of it.

No; the Arroyo Seco Parkway crosses the LA River northeast of Chavez Ravine/Elysian Park. The Arroyo Seco is a completely different waterway---a tributary, actually, to the LA River.

I went through here just over the weekend. It's still in the process of being demolished, seems it's taking a while. I saw that the roadway of the bridge is now dug up, but the bridge itself is still standing.

Yes it is. But I believe that it was in the 1970s, that Hermon Avenue was renamed Via Marisol. The neighborhood of Hermon still exists, and is given those blue Los Angeles neighborhood signs; a monument sign exists on a median as well announcing Hermon, which has an interesting history. The communities along the Arroyo all have an interesting history, in my opinion.

"Arroyo Seco" is actually a redundant name, I think. In Spanish, an arroyo is a seasonal stream/wash/river, usually dry, but flowing when it rains. "Seco" means dry in Spanish, so, essentially it's like calling it a dry, dry waterway.

A couple months ago we discussed this black & white photograph showing a bus-stop along the Hollywood Freeway.

I spotted a short, but interesting scene in a video a couple weeks ago, showing a transit bus dropping off passengers along the Hollywood Freeway.
-at least I think it's the Hollywood Freeway...(I guess it could be the Harbor Freeway)





Does anyone recognize what stop this would be? -I don't remember seeing a water tower, like the one on the left.

The video is really interesting if you're interested in traffic flow / congestion / solutions.
It show numerous cities across the United States, and all kinds of vintage automobiles, trucks and buses.

There are several other short scenes of Los Angeles, but mostly other cities.

I've been wondering what this building used to be; now I know it was the Pasadena Winter Garden!

I first came across this building a month or so ago while driving the google_mobile; at the time I thought it looked like a Pasadena-version of the Pan-Pacific Auditorium.
(I had planned to post about it and seek additional information)

Since we're in Pasadena (and I figured out that I have the photobucket app on my phone, now I can upload more of vintage LA)...Last year I went to a play about Zora Neale Hurston... it was pretty fun ,my friend's mother is a volunteer at the Pasadena Playhouse and she mentioned to the cast that my grandfather was married to Zola for a few years back in the Twenties....

either way I got to meet the cast and even sat next to TV stars of my youth (a few cast members of " It's A Different World"), but on the way to the playhouse we came across this cool building that I thought was an antique store but saw that they sell new furniture, it caught my eye and I snapped a picture of it..when I got home I looked at the pic and was surprised to see the mosaic! anyways I can't think of what street it was on but I know its on the same street as the play house.
