FredH, thanks for your fantastic and intriguing post about New China City, I really enjoyed it. And great work recognizing the 1001 N. Alameda building pre-Phillipe's! I wouldn't have noticed that, but glad you did. I think you just inspired me to have lunch there today.
Now, someone needs to do a little Phillipe's research! I wonder if we can dig up some old photos or stories about the former locations -- apparently there were several.
Looking online, it seems that Phillipe's had three locations prior to 1001 N. Alameda.
It was started at 300 N. Alameda in 1908, moved to 246 Aliso in 1911 and then to 364 Aliso in 1918, where it stayed until construction of the Hollywood Freeway in 1951.

The Botiller Mansion is amazing G_W. Isn't it the one people usually associate with 'Sunset Boulevard'?
Well, e_r, there wasn't actually a 10086 Sunset Blvd... and the house at Irving and Wilshire used for filming is gone. Maybe given its prominence on Sunset, Angelenos do think of the Botiller house when they think of Norma & Joe. Btw, in the movie Joe ducked the car reposessors in Judy Garland and Vincent Minnelli's driveway at 10000 Sunset...
The CentaurCafe on Sunset Blvd. in 1935. I've never heard of this place before and the street address is unknown.
I can't quite make out the number on the awning. Anyone have access to a 1935 directory?
I just came across this photo and realized it's a continuation of the above photo.
This view is directly east of the CentaurCafe (I recognized the house with the lattice balcony).
But then we have the great leveler... garbage. Just like the humblest bungalow elsewhere in town, the grander than grand Resnicks have to put up with wheelybins in front of the house.

That's funny, and it made me think: In the neighboring town to me, San Marino, which is EXTREMELY picky about property values and chock-full of city rules (and a wealthy city to boot), garbage cans aren't even put out front on trash day; for San Marino residents, the garbage is picked up directly from their back yards.

I was shocked by the proximity of this community pool to the freeway and the exit ramp. After looking at the photo for a while
I noticed the top of a car in the bushes to the right and realized the entrance ramp was right behind the shrubbery.
Imagine the toxic air these kids were breathing (or the possibility of an out-of-control car careening into the pool).

I've driven by that building many times and I don't recall ever seeing water in the pool. I've walked around Echo Park Lake, but I never even noticed the pedestrian tunnels that go under the freeway. Very interesting!

Took quite a bit of digging (just the way I like it) and it appears that C. Ralph Sentney's office was at 9119 Sunset and Allan Dale's Centaur Cafe was at 9131.
Neither building is there anymore, but it looks like the house with the lattice work from the 1935 images may be the house with the two chimneys behind the parking lot.

Sopas--- Interestingly, the less-desirable flats of Beverly Hills--the streets between Sunset and Santa Monica--have rear alleys from which the garbage is collected. Still you'd think that a couple as controlling of their environment as the Resnicks would pay whatever it cost to have their potato peelings removed from the service end of their house and not rely on municipal collection from the curb... or at least have designer wheelybins.

Oh yes, I'm aware of the alleys of Beverly Hills and that their garbage is collected from the alleys; but in San Marino, the garbage men actually go into the backyards of people's homes and bring their cans to the truck. Now that's service!
I do see your point, though, about the Resnicks and designer wheelybins---perhaps a D&G logo on the green waste bin?

Mickey's shop wasn't the same one--his Michael's Exclusive Haberdashery (and later, but not for long, the Mickey Cohen Exclusive Haberdashery) was at 8804 Sunset. His henchman Hooky Rothman was shot to death here on August 18, 1948.
Wow, G_W. I'd never have guessed that Mickey Cohen was also a retailer of men's clothing! Out of curiosity I started reading about his life. It was quite interesting but I quickly became sidetracked by Miss Candy Barr, one of the many women in his life. (I read in one place that Mickey Cohen was asexual and if so, maybe Miss Barr was just eye candy for Mickey.) In any case she had a pretty colorful life, did well as a stripper and B girl, and was a heck of a looker. Here are some random bits and photos.

Did this club belong to Mickey? I'll bet he was at least connected to it somehow. Given the choice, I'd rather see Candy Barr at the Largo than visit Marineland.
Well, enough cheesecake I guess. I'm probably boring some of you gents.
In the early 90's Candy Barr (I love saying her name, in case you hadn't noticed) died from complications of pneumonia. Her grandson, Ryan Barr, named his first daughter Candy Barr after her. He also has another daughter, Snickers.
Great CandyBarr post 3940dxer! My last name is Barr and my parents almost named my sister Candy.
They thought it would be a cute name....unaware of the infamous stripper.
