Parking will be below ground and will be connected to the already existing Salt Palace parking. The ground floor is meant to be continually engaging and thus will have the following:
1. A corner cafe/market on the corner of 200 South and West Temple with public seating area.
2. A restaurant/bar fronting West Temple.
3. Lobby entrance on West Temple between the corner market and the restaurant.
4. Drop off and parking entrance as well as another lobby entrance fronting 200 S.

Unfortunately no Cinemark like I'd heard rumors of, but I'm satisfied with the activation.

The hotel is still required to go through cbdr for approval but with the state and county pushing as well as the city, it is unlikely that any changes will be coming to the overall design.
2. Hotel operator and flag was listed sometime late 2017 or early 2018 to be intercontinental.
3. The goal is to have the approvals come quickly so that a contractor and workers can be locked in as soon as possible. With the construction market being tight, the sooner things can get moving, the less labor will ultimately cost.
4. The cinemark theaters is a possible addition for the proposed arrow press square hotel being planned across the street (details below).

Just to note, there is still a possible 2nd phase at the north location of the same block, that would include a residential component as well an additional hotel tower. It will be contingent on the increase in conventions/meetings and how the planned arrow press sq. Hotel complex turns out.

Speaking on arrow press square, last i heard it is planned to include the previously mentioned cinemark theater, 500-700 hotel rooms and include at least 1 residential building (15 to 20 stories). Construction isn't expected to start until 2022 or 2023 at the earliest. This may change now that the plans for the cch have been released.

Downtown Update - The Moda Luxe

Isaac Riddle Reports - Full Article @ https://www.buildingsaltlake.com/dev...ings-200-east/

The 200 South block of 200 East is in the middle of a significant transformation. The block is attracting developers interested in its proximity to popular bars, restaurants and downtown amenities. There are currently three residential developments either actively underway or in the planning stages. The most recent of those is the Moda Luxe, a proposed mixed-use development by JF Capital.

The Moda Luxe will be nine stories with 220 units. The project will consist of a three-story parking podium, two of which will be subterranean, below eight floors of residential. The majority of the units will be a mix of studio, one and two bedroom apartments with four, three-bedroom penthouse units on the ninth floor.

The ground floor will house the third level of parking, the residential lobby and two restaurant-oriented commercial areas. At the second above-ground level will be most of the proposed residential amenities including a deck and swimming pool. Additional amenities including a canopied area and dog park will occupy the roof level.

The project will occupy most of the mid-block parcels on the west side of 200 East, replacing some surface parking and five, one and two-story buildings on 0.97 acres...

SLCC Westpointe Center aims to 'close gap' of Utah's workforce needs

...Tami Pyfer frequently fields telephone calls from business and industry representatives who are searching for skilled workers.

"(They say) 'We need more. We need a skilled workforce. We support public education but there's a gap. How can you help us?' I really wasn't prepared for the enormity of the gap and this problem facing our business and industry partners," Pyfer said.

On Wednesday, some of those same industry partners joined in celebrating the opening of Salt Lake Community College's Westpointe Workforce Training and Education Center in Salt Lake's northwest quadrant.

SLCC President Deneece Huftalin said the $43 million, 121,000-square-foot center was designed and built with the support and vision of industry, government, community and education partners.

"This is the first building in my experience with the college where we have had this kind of community and industry support be so explicitly stated as we went through the building process," Huftalin said.

The stamp of industry partners is evident throughout the center, contributing both state-of-the-industry equipment on which students can learn and train and scholarships to support their educations.

"We will be thanking them for many, many years as they stepped up to help us with this building," Huftalin said.

The center includes 34 lab spaces, eight classrooms and a 3-acre lot for SLCC's commercial truck driving program...

Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women's Cancers at Huntsman Cancer Institute

The Huntsman Cancer Foundation (HCF) announced that several individuals and business organizations have committed a total of $40 million to support a proposed major building expansion of Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah (U of U). The announcement of these historic gifts was made by Peter Huntsman, HCF Chairman and CEO, at HCF’s annual gala held this evening at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City.

The lead donors to the project include Spencer and Kristen Kirk in honor of Kathryn F. Kirk, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Aid Fund and doTERRA International...

...The funding will support a proposal to significantly expand the Cancer Hospital at HCI, part of the University of Utah Health system. The proposed addition would extend from the north end of HCI’s existing buildings on the campus of the U of U in Salt Lake City. The expansion will be called, The Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women’s Cancers at Huntsman Cancer Institute, and add an additional 100,000 square feet to HCI’s cancer campus, including up to 50 additional inpatient rooms and workspace for oncology specialists. The new proposed structure would also expand the number of procedure, consultation and outpatient exam rooms and would increase the size of the HCI’s Linda B. and Robert B. Wiggins Wellness and Integrative Health Center...

Update, INDUSTRY Development - Granary District

Isaac Riddle Reports - Full Article @

Significant changes are coming to the Granary District, in addition to a neighborhood-wide mural project set underway, the neighborhood is becoming a destination for microbreweries and creative coworking.

On Wednesday, city officials announced the neighborhood’s newest future tenant, the co-working and co-living company, INDUSTRY. The Denver-based company plans to open a coworking and collaborative multifamily development at the site of the former Gateway Plaza at 537 West 600 South... The Granary space will occupy 8.3 acres, replacing an industrial warehouse space that was once an old silver foundry at the 500 West block of 600 South and 500 West (the north side of the Granary District). The first phase is expected to open in late summer or early fall 2019 and will include more than 150,000- square-feet of modern office space and shared tenant amenities that will include conference rooms, kitchens, event space and roof decks.

The adaptive reuse will feature two-story ceilings, an abundance of natural light, raw steel framework, and Teknion modular glass wall systems that INDUSTRY officials state will serve as a platform for innovation.

The proposed second phase will include a 30,000 square foot climbing gym, an assortment of restaurants and new multi-family housing options...

Updates - Four New Missing Middle Residential Developments

Isaac Riddle Reports - Full Article @ https://www.buildingsaltlake.com/com...-developments/

Moda Main

The Moda Main, by JF Capital, will consist of 11 townhome units at the 1500 South block of Main Street. The project replaces a small commercial building and a surface parking lot and will consist of two three-story buildings with six and five units each respectively.

The units will be rentals with six one-bedroom units and five two-bedroom units. The six one-bedroom homes will front Main Street and the five two-bedroom homes fronting a private walkway at the parcel’s western edge. The garages in both buildings will be accessed via a private street connecting Van Buren and Harris Avenues.

Because the project replaces a parking lot that residents have a history of utilizing, the developers will include seven angled parking spaces in the park strip on Main Street.

The Moda Main project will be just a few hundred yards south of the recently completed, 15 Main (formerly M15) Townhomes. Both projects will occupy opposite sides of the 1500 South block of Main Street. The project consists of 20 for-sale townhomes, several of which are already actively listed.

600 No. & East Capitol Blvd.

The development consists of two twin homes and two single-family detached homes, with three units fronting each street.

The new homes will replace a single-family home and a duplex. Each home will be three-stories with a garage and entertainment room at the ground level and a mix of bedrooms and living space on the second and third floors. The single-family detached homes will have five bedrooms and five full bathrooms each. The twin homes will have four bedrooms and three full bathrooms each

Highland Heights

will consist entirely of single-family detached homes. The four new construction homes will replace a two-story brick home on 0.46 acres. Each new home will be two stories with a fully-development basement, four bedrooms and a two-car garage at the ground-floor level. Two of the homes will front Highland Drive and the garages to all four homes will be accessed via a small driveway connecting to Caton Way, a small through street directly south of the project.

TAG 700 Row Homes

The TAG 700 development consists of one building with four, three-story townhome units. The project will replace a brick duplex at the 2500 South block of 700 East. Each home will have three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a two-car garage, with one unit fronting 700 East and the remaining units fronting a private walkway directly north of the main building.

Downtown Update - Giv Group moving forward with Project Open’s second phase

Isaac Riddle Reports - Full Article @ https://www.buildingsaltlake.com/giv...-second-phase/

ust a few years ago the area directly north of the Guadalupe/North Temple TRAX and FrontRunner Stations was dominated by surface parking, vacant lots and light industry. While some of those characteristics remain, since 2015 the neighborhood has been experiencing a significant transformation that shows no immediate signs of letting up as developers, Giv Group, moved forward with a proposed second phase of the Project Open Development at the 300 North block of 500 West.

The second phase will consist of two buildings, a five-story building that will occupy the project’s northeast corner and a three-story building that will occupy the project’s southwest corner directly west of Project Open’s recently-completed first phase, a six-story 112-unit building that fronts 500 West. The second phase will add 95 units, bringing the project’s total unit count to 207, 155 of which will be reserved for residents earning between 25 to 50 percent Area Median Income (AMI).

Phase Two’s larger building will consist of 74 units with 65 studio, one three-bedroom, four one-bedroom and four two-bedroom apartments. The building will have four, one-story walkup residential units with and four two-story loft units with studio/commercial flex spaces at the ground level fronting 500 West. The one-story units will have studio/flex space separating the apartment from the sidewalk. The lobby, mailroom and meeting room will occupy the buildings north end fronting 400 North.

The second and smaller building will be three stories and will be built to resemble townhomes, though the units will be stacked flats (traditional apartment style). The three-story building will have 21 units, with seven units on each floor. The units will be a mix of three and four-bedroom apartments.

The three-story building will sit directly south of a proposed clubhouse and directly west of the first phase building. In addition to the clubhouse, amenities will include a small outdoor plaza, community garden, playground, bike repair station, dog run, gazebo, gym and conference room...

Update - Capitol Apartments

Isaac Riddle Reports - Full Article @ https://www.buildingsaltlake.com/hou...capitol-motel/

For the past year, the Housing Authority of Salt Lake City (HASLC) has provided transitional housing at the former Capitol Motel at the 1700 South block of State Street. But now the local nonprofit is ready to provide more long-term affordable housing by redeveloping the former hotel property into a mixed-use, mixed-income development

HASLC has started the Conditional Design Review application process so that they may begin construction next year on the proposed project referred to as the Capitol Apartments. The project will be four-stories with 93 residential units, the majority of which will be reserved for residents earning around 40 percent of the Area Median Income...

Downtown - Vestar turns to public art to enliven the Gateway Center

http://img2.10bestmedia.com/

Isaac Riddle Reports - Full Article @ https://www.buildingsaltlake.com/ves...liven-gateway/

“The Gateway is becoming much more experience driven with a focus on community and entertainment,” said Hatch.

Earlier this month, Vestar debuted two murals by international art collectives 2Alas and Dourone. The first is across from the Planetarium TRAX station on 400 West and is by 2Alas, an art collective comprised of New Yorker Andrew Antonaccio and Cuban-born Filio Galvez. The mural is titled “Loretta Young” after the Utah-born, Academy-award winning actress. The textured mural is designed to visually change when viewed through a camera lens and according to the artists, it is a modern interpretation of what it means to be human in a heavily mediated society.

On the north face of the Clark Planetarium is Dourone’s “Two World Faces.” Dourone, aka Fabio Lopez Gonzalo, started as a graffiti artist in Madrid and focuses his work on urban spaces.

Several other large-scale art installations are underway or were recently installed by artists David Flores, Brendan Monroe, INSA and Felipe Pantone...

Downtown Update - SLC’S NEWEST JAZZ CLUB, AVANT GROOVE

https://catalystmagazine.net/slcs-ne...pens-pierpont/
http://www.avantgroove.com/

... “I always thought I’d build this place in the Bay area,” says Bay-area native, Vecchi, as we marvel at the high ceilings and luxurious décor of the newly remodeled building on Pierpont Ave, directly behind the Rose Wagner. Vecchi works in tech start-ups and moved to SLC a few years ago. While SLC has many jazz musicians, fans, summertime jazz concerts and SLC Jazz Festival, there is a lack of permanent jazz clubs in downtown SLC. Rather than building Vecchi’s club in the Bay, it became clear to him, Salt Lake is the place (to build a jazz club)...

...Vecchi’s goal is to bring the world’s best jazz musicians to Utah, and recreate the feeling of jazz clubs from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Venues such as Gallivan Center, Red Butte and Deer Valley serve as great outdoor venues for touring jazz bands in the summers, but Vecchi’s wish is to allow local and touring musicians a jazz club for them to play in year-round...

Downtown Adj./ East Bench - University of Utah - Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Center

...The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation donated $47.5 million for the project, which will house 75 private patient rooms.

"We believe strongly in a fusion of health care and hospitality, and we think we’ve been able to do that," said Ray Neilsen, chairman of foundation's board of directors.

The design of the new facility places a heavy emphasis on aesthetics, Neilsen continued. The conceptual designs show windows covering much of the building, giving patients a view of the mountains and gardens...

...Using 150,000 square feet, the new center will have a mobility garage located inside the facility, along with two therapy gyms and two floors of therapy space.

The total estimated cost of the project is $423.5 million...

University of Utah Health ranked 6th among 107 academic medical systems for quality of care

by Ben Lockart

SALT LAKE CITY — A recently concluded quality of care study has ranked the University of Utah Health system sixth among 107 academic medical centers nationwide.

The system was ranked for the safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency and equity of its care, as well as its focus on patients, University of Utah Health spokeswoman Kathy Wilets said in a statement.

The review, named the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study and formerly called the University HealthSystem Consortium Awards, has ranked University of Utah Health in the top 10 for eight consecutive years, including No. 1 rankings last year and in 2010.

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, which earned this year's top ranking, is the only other organization to receive a top 10 ranking for eight years in a row....

The Milken Institute Ranks the Best U.S. Universities for Technology Transfer
- New Report Cites University Research Funding, Technology Transfer as Catalysts for Economic Growth https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...300442457.html

University of Utah #1 out of more than 200 ranked - BYU #4

LOS ANGELES, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Milken Institute today released a new report ranking more than 200 universities across the United States for their prowess in developing basic research into new technologies, products and companies – a process known as "technology transfer."

The report "Concept to Commercialization: The Best Universities for Technology Transfer" also carries with it a clear policy recommendation: American research universities are among the nation's most powerful engines for domestic economic growth, and funding to sustain their research brings strong returns in the form of new industries, businesses and jobs.

"American economic vitality is fueled by invention," said Ross DeVol, chief research officer for the Milken Institute, who also authored the original 2006 study on the topic. "As a society, we understand our universities as the training ground for the next generation of leaders and doers, but we often overlook the benefits these institutions impart simply by bringing new ideas to life. Our study shows the impact of university research both locally and nationally is profound, and needs our support."

The report found that university research funding supports the creation of both middle- and high-skill industry jobs through innovation, commercialization and technology transfer, with varied and significant multiplier effects. As such, it makes four key policy recommendations:[/B]

Maintain basic scientific research funding. Basic research provides long-term economic benefits by allowing universities to take on research that has a low probability of quick commercial success, but potential to deliver a high reward and to create whole new industries.
•Incentivize technology transfer through a new federal commercialization fund. The federal government should increase research funding under a special commercialization pool. Universities demonstrating greater commercialization success in the market should receive higher funding in this program.
•Increase technology transfer capacity through federal matching grants. The federal government should commence a matching grant program with states to fund an increase in staff and resources in technology transfer offices (TTOs). Higher rates of academic entrepreneurship are essential to reviving declining start-up rates and productivity across the economy.
•Increase technology transfer efficiency by adopting best practices. At the state level, policies should be implemented that incentivize the adoption of best practices in commercialization at public universities, including TTOs.
