Tokyo Sky Tree

Surprised there isn't a topic about this here. Under construction in Tokyo is the replacement for Tokyo Tower. It's commonly known as New Tokyo Tower, but they held a contest to name the tower, and the winner was Tokyo Sky Tree. I'm not liking the name, but I can't wait to see the tower completed at the end of 2011. It will be 610.58 m (2,003 ft) tall, and make it the tallest structure in Japan when completed. There will be 2 observation levels, one at 350m, the other at 450m. Both are higher than the top of Tokyo Tower (333.33m). What a view that will be! Here's the official website: http://www.tokyo-skytree.jp/english/
The Japanese page has more pictures.

It'll still be in operation, though TV broadcasters will move their main transmitters to the Tokyo Sky Tree. But I read that the company that owns Tokyo Tower wants to make it more attractive to broadcasters by extending the antenna. It'll still remain a tourist attraction, though. It basically is the symbol of Tokyo.

I believe that Tokyo Sky Tree will be the tallest free-standing structure in the world for a month or two ( then that Dubai tower will take the title )

What?

The Burj Dubai is already completed and is nearly 700ft taller than the Tokyo tower.

Tokyo Sky Tree becomes tallest structure in Japan

The Tokyo Sky Treewill stand at 2,080 feet when completed.

Just over halfway to its planned height, the Tokyo Sky Tree became the tallest structure in Japan on Monday when construction reached 338 meters (1,108 feet). When completed, it will stand 634 meters (2,080 feet).

The Sky Tree on Monday surpassed the city’s 333-meter (1,092-foot) Tokyo Tower, a landmark and top tourist attraction since it opened in 1958.

Both the Sky Tree and Tokyo tower are designed for television and radio transmission. The Sky Tree’s towering reach will enable transmission of digital signals well above skyscrapers that rise above 200 meters (600 feet) in Tokyo, according to the Sky Tree’s Web site.

When complete, the Sky Tree will have observation towers at both the 350-meter (1,148-foot) and 450-meter (1,476-foot) levels.

While the Sky Tree will be the tallest structure in Japan, it won’t be the biggest in the world. That honor falls to the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, which rises more than 800 meters (2,625 feet) above the Persian Gulf.

Construction is expected to be completed in December 2011 with a grand opening in spring 2012.

Nice and futuristic, but what will happen to the old Tokyo Tower? It is kind of a Tokyo landmark.

^it will stay, and stay open it will. Tokyo tower is in the very heart of the city. Sky tree is way off to the East of Asakusa, which is peripheral by Tokyo standards.
