Talking Little India, Singapore!

I'd taken quite a number of scenes from Little India in Singapore.
Here are some of them, I'll add more eventually.

Most of the buildings here are conserved shophouses built before WW2.

An overview:

Beautiful pics!

How is it that there is such a large East Indian population in Singapore?

There is a substantial Indian minority presence in Singapore. Most of them originally came from southeastern Indian state of Tamil-Nadu & Ceylon. Most are Hindu but there are also many Indian Muslims.

It all started when the British East India Company started a port in Singapore, and added Singapore to the British Empire which was already strongly established all over India. It would be a matter of time before the Indians started coming to Singapore to find work, as traders, or as government servants. (My grandfather himself was an Englishman born in India and moved to Singapore)

Today, to add to the old Indian community, are a growing number of Indian expats from India (and other parts of thr world), and they are very rich, as well as the traditional labourers. Many congregate in Little India.

Singapore's president is also of Indian origin. I have many Indian friends, and within the Singapore society, they are frequently seen as being good-at-talking

Wow. That sounds like a very rich and interesting history. I'll have to read more about it.

Thanks.

Great Pics!! ... brings back fond memories of my Singapore visit last year.

It is such a scenic city with so much to take in. Its multicuturalism makes it very interesting to walk and shop.

Indeed, great photos. I just visited Little India in Singapore today. I thoroughly enjoyed it in person. I saw this thread last night and had put the location on my agenda of "stuff to do today" this morning.

I had no idea Singapore had an Indian populace. One of my professors here in Los Angeles was Indian, but born and raised in Singapore. I thought he was some sort of odd case, but apparently not after seeing this.

Thanks for the pictures! My brother works in Singapore from time to time (in fact, he's there right now), so I try to go out and visit him. Singapore is truly a hidden gem. I love Little India, as well as all the other cultures meshing together in Singapore.
