Agreed. And the fact that I'm seeing long concrete pilings is a good sign something substantial with a little quality is going up.

Le Méridien

I know that there were some questions and discussion regarding the new owners of the W in the CBD, their renewed contract with the W brand, and what seemed like a conflict between those developments, announced plans for Le Méridien at that site, and the inclusion of the W in (preferred) WTC proposal.

It seems that all is well, and the CBD location will still be rebranded Le Méridien in 2014.

That city business article from a month was so poorly written so thanks for this article. As for South Market District Im sure they are starting on apartment building first because the garage will be a quicker build.

Just took a drive through downtown...

noticed a few things:

the cladding on the old Texaco building seems to have been replaced...looks better, but that wasn't hard to accomplish.

This is one of my pet peeves... on the Ritz-Carlton, there's a section above the main sign where the stone cracked/fell off/whatever and they've just replaced it with a sheet of metal...it's not flush with the building, it's bent, it's in two pieces, and it's not even the same color as the surrounding stone...seriously amateurish.

Took a picture of one of the new evac sculptures:

Correct. They need to complete both simultaneously unless plans have changed. IIRC the parking spaces for the apartments were supposed to be provided in the garage (i.e. apartment dwellers would need to cross the street to access their vehicles). This prevents the apartment buildings from having an ugly parking podium.

Quote:
The construction time frame for Parcel C (retail and apartments) is estimated at 18 months and Parcel D
(parking garage and retail), 10 months.

Maybe a dash of color would make them stand out more?

It is deceptively large, but yeah, you could be right...having something that "blends in" when it's raining could be a liability come hurricane season.

They stand out more in person. Blends in a bit during the rain but I suppose if you are to evacuate you would be doing that before the rain gets here

They are permanent. Why wouldn't people who need them know about their locations months in advance anyway just from living here?

These are not as bad as I thought, although I don't like the stainless steel. A powder-coated black or dark green would have been more appropriate and less gaudy.

The shape of the statue itself is already pretty distinctive, so it doesn't need to be shiny as well. Switching materials would also greatly reduce costs.

Not sure why the CityBusiness article is locked when the same information is available for free at the Advocate.
