If only we knew what was going up here, we could generate more enthusiasm. For now, we can only anticipate.

I hate that there will be a tower pressed up against 9 W. One of the great American skyscrapers that deserves to stand alone.

The fact that they destroyed such beautiful buildings in the process makes it heartbreaking

hope to God that 5 story brownstone beauty is landmarked . .
(west of the empty 31 W.57th St. lot) . .
what a huge magnificently ornamented 2-story curved bay . .
it's quite the luxuriously appointed AAA-grade cozy building.

. . and to the east of that empty lot . .
a rarely seen full side-view of the modern black & white Solo tower (9W57th) . .
soaring top to bottom complete with distinctive widening base curves . .

Love the 3 steel trusses . . crossing the vertical black stripe of glass
soaring up the middle of the white marble side . .
It's a sublime architectural viewpoint opportunity . .
This is Solo's soon-to-be-lost best view-pont . .
It's not such an attractive building from the park . .

Too late, it closed and the building is demolished.

Rizzoli isn't closed, it relocated to the Flatiron District. But, yeah, the former Rizzoli building is long-gone.

I want to know what type of tower Vornado is planning here. They have been very tight-lipped on their plans for this site.

Supposedly a very high end hotel...

Vornado Chief Plans ‘Seven-Star Hotel’ By Central Park

Sept 9, 2014
By ELIOT BROWN

Vornado chief executive Steven Roth said at an industry panel discussion Tuesday the site of the now-closed Rizzoli Bookstore at 31 West 57th Street, just south of Central Park, is going to be “a seven-star hotel.”

Only a handful of hotels around the world are billed as having seven stars, an unofficial way to connote extreme luxury.

Now that the site is cleared, it's only a matter of time until construction starts and we get some renderings and other details.

I'm normally the person that complains about bumping threads if there isn't any news, but could somebody point me in the direction of any more recent pictures of the site or better yet, please post them?

It seems unlikely that such a prime site could have been sitting undisturbed for over a year now without some kind of action.

There's nothing yet, and I'm not surprised.

Vornado are known for being very deliberate, methodical (some would say slow-as-molasses) developers. They took quite a while to develop Bloomberg Tower, and they still haven't developed the Penn Plaza tower. They took nearly a decade to develop 220 CPS.

The only guarantees are that whatever is developed will be extremely expensive/high end, and we'll be getting something very tall and thin, given the site, zoning, and need to go tall for park views.

Hopefully preliminary and not close to resembling whatever gets built, but still...

What in hell? A cantilever where none is needed and a height lower than Solow? Nope, not falling for it. Good find, though!

First Look For LeFrak’s Cantilevering 31 West 57th Street, Midtown Manhattan

Quote:
Situated to the west of the Solow Building on a site that was once the home of the original Rizzoli Bookstore and several other low-slung buildings, 27-33 West 57th Street is one of the most prime sites on Billionare’s Row. The property is in the hands of developer LeFrak, and today YIMBY has the first look at what may eventually rise on the Midtown site in the near future.

The rendering shows a relatively tall glass skyscraper, shorter than the Solow Building, with a noticeable cantilever starting several floors above street level on the eastern side. The plans bear a substantial resemblance to Central Park Tower being built to the west, by Columbus Circle.

Not much has been said about the new rendering, or the type of building it will become, though another residential tower appears most likely. A six-star hotel had previously been mentioned as a possible occupant.

It may not have a supertall status, but it does look like the occupants will have unimpeded views of Central Park since the majority of the building stands above the old pre-war buildings along 59th Street. No completion date has been announced.
