Very cool I had no idea this building was still surviving. It also has an interesting connection with another historic preservation announced this year the former home of President Grant who lived in the vicinity of Central Market during the 1850s while working as quartermaster general. His purchased a second larger home for him and his wife closer to the quartermasters office in the local army barracks after spending what he called the most miserable winter of his life after a brief posting in upstate NY. This second Grant home is the one being moved back close to its original location in the vicinity of Lafayette Park this time near the Dequindre Cut extension from its current location at the former state fair grounds.

I'd much rather see it returned to Cadillac Square or Belle Isle as a market. Or even selling it/donating it to those developers that want to bring back Western Market. But at the same time I'm glad to see it saved at all and it will definitely be appreciated at Greenfield Village.

Speaking of Ford:

Wayne County Commission approves sale of two historic mills in Hines Park

Quote:
Private development will occupy two historic mills once operated by Henry Ford in Hines Park after a vote by the Wayne County Commission.

Commissioners voted, 11-3, during its meeting Tuesday to sell the Wilcox Mill, 230 Wilcox in Plymouth, and the Newburgh Mill, 37401 Hines Drive in Livonia. The sale of the mills — Wilcox to Tony Roko for the use of the Plymouth-based Art Foundation and the Newburgh Mill to developer Richard Cox — now move toward closing the sale of the properties so the property developers can build their projects.

The plans will allow work to commence on the mills, which have sat unused by the county for several decades since Ford closed the plants in the middle of the 20th century. Several commissioner said they were happy to see something happen with the mills, since nothing has been done for years.

I noticed driving up 75 today that Zen Apartments are under construction in Troy. This is part of the City Center building redevelopment, which included seperatet new retail buildings and a new parking garage with ground floor retail.

The design is by Krieger Klatt Architects of Royal Oak.

$39 million secured to separate Allen Road in Woodhaven from railroad crossing
Quote:
Freight trains crossing Allen Road routinely cause traffic to back up south to Van Horn Road and north to Woodhaven's shopping district along Allen Road south of West Road.

About 30,000 vehicles, including 2,140 commercial vehicles, cross the railroad tracks on Allen Road daily, according to [Wayne County Executive Warren] Evans' office.

Freight trains coming from Canadian National's train yard in Flat Rock cause delays of 9 minutes or more at the Allen Road crossing, Evans said.

Within about two years, Ara Darakjian and his Birmingham-based Tir Equities LLC hopes to begin construction on the 5.33-acre site on Orchard Lake Road overlooking Cass Lake in the tiny Oakland County community nestled between Sylvan Lake and Orchard Lake Village.

In the end, the 93 mobile home sites, of which only about 65 are currently occupied, are to be turned into the Residences at Cass Lake project with about 250 high-end apartments and 50,000 square feet of retail if Darakjian can get the needed approvals and financing.

^Thanks for the update! Here's two more recent developments:

Ecorse, River Rouge join forces for West Jefferson corridor redevelopment

Quote:
A walkable business district along West Jefferson Avenue, a riverfront residential mixed-use district, and kayaks paddling down the Detroit River.

That’s the vision being Ecorse and River Rouge leaders have for their cities. And they recently took a massive first step toward establishing a joint framework to make it a reality.

The neighboring cities recently released the West Jefferson Corridor Plan, a comprehensive 150-page document that lays out a strategy to revitalize both communities with a focus on their common main thoroughfare, West Jefferson.

"The goal is to get us on the path to sustainability," says Richard Marsh, Ecorse's city administrator. "And how you do that is through community and economic development. It's the bloodline for any city."

Marsh says the plan aims to take advantage of the economic momentum in neighboring Detroit, creating an attractive corridor along Jefferson stretching from the Motor City to Wyandotte.

"We're only 15 minutes away from Detroit, so it makes us attractive," Marsh says. "We believe we have an opportunity to benefit from that. This is why now."

Baker College wants to bring 7-story campus building to Royal Oak

Quote:
Baker College now has its eyes set on Royal Oak for a new campus building after it failed to reach a deal on a similar project in Ferndale last spring.

Carson Equities LLC is the developer for the multi-million-dollar project proposed to be built on the site of the Kinsey-Garrett Funeral Home at 420 S. Lafayette, according to documents filed with Royal Oak planners.

“They are seeking site plan approval and it could go before the Planning Commission at its meeting in February,” said Todd Fenton, Royal Oak’s economic development manager.

Idk what you guys say, but this is clearly of some best visual effect.
I found it on SSC.

Pizza slices, huh? Damn it's more than pizza. That front glass and orange thing are absolutely terrific.
It even made me google "Little Caesars", which took me to some Ilitch family. Then I told myslef - ah ouais, I kinda remember some comments about them being bad developers on here.
As a matter of fact, they are completely unknown over here. There's no Little Caesars here, only big ones.
They did a good job to their flagship building over there anyway.

Frankly, I would kill for that glass and orange thing in my hood. It's so flashy and contemporary!

It's not just orange... the lights are LED and so far, I've seen them also set to blue (9 Jan) and white (mid-Nov).

Also, there is a separate thread for Detroit city proper. This thread is for the area surrounding the city.

Pontiac firm to open longest enclosed pedestrian bridge in US
Quote:
The city of Pontiac will soon be home to what is being called the nation's longest enclosed pedestrian bridge.

Fast-growing mortgage firm United Shore Financial Services announced Thursday that it has obtained city approval to construct the 1,000-foot-long, 26-foot-wide bridge across South Boulevard. The $20 million bridge will connect the firm's existing headquarters to its recently acquired 900,000-square-foot expansion building.

In comparison, the "Skywalk" pedestrian bridge that connects the two halves of Somerset Collection is about 700 feet long.

Oakland University is preparing another building expansion
Last November, I posted on the university getting ready to start an expansion on South Foundation Hall. They are now nearing another expansion project; this time on Wilson Hall. And they've recently released an RFP for AE services to renovate Varner Hall.

Groundbreaking at Asian-themed mixed-use development in Novi could happen this summer

Quote:
Work on the Sakura Novi mixed-use project could begin later this year after the developers secured their most-recent approval from the city council.

The council unanimously approved a rezoning map amendment for the property along Grand River and 11 Mile near Town Center Drive that is proposed to become an Asian-themed commercial development with One World Market and several Asian-themed restaurants accompanying several dozen residential units. It was discussed March 2 by the council, several months after first being reviewed by the planning commission before that body approved it last month.

Once all permissions are secured, work could begin as early as August on the first leg of the project with an opening date of the first phase in 2022.
I have to say I laughed a little about this remark:
Quote:
"Our team has worked hard to achieve all of the attributes of the vision we discussed then," said Scott Aikens of Birmingham-based Robert B. Aikens & Associates, regarding the development's plans from years ago. "Sakura Novi will boldly tell everyone in Oakland County and Michigan and in the Midwest that Novi is a worldly, cosmopolitan city."
Nothing like some Asian restaurants in a strip mall and a few apartments to tell the world that you are a "worldly, cosmopolitan city", right?

Beaumont Opens New Clinic in Farmington Hills for Early Lung Cancer Detection

Quote:
Beaumont Hospital, Farmington Hills has opened a new clinic to provide early diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of lung cancer. The new clinic is part of the Interventional Pulmonary Program at the hospital with advanced bronchoscopy.

“It can take weeks or months for a patient with an abnormal scan to come to the first diagnostic stage,” says Dr. Philip Kaplan, pulmonologist and medical director of the clinic, which is the fourth in the hospital system. “Our clinic’s state-of-the-art technology can dramatically accelerate the diagnostic process.”

Kaplan says the new clinic offers a robotic bronchoscopy that can study and collect biopsies on lung masses that are not accessible using traditional techniques. It has a flexible endoscope and provides doctors with continuous vision.
The addition broke ground in October 2016.

Demolition begins at the Palace of Auburn Hills

Demolition is underway at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Part of the exterior of the Detroit Pistons’ former home could be seen crashing down Monday, nearly eight months after its sale was announced.

The music and sports venue opened in 1988. The venue hosted its final event — a Bob Seger concert — on Sept. 23, 2017.

Seems like a strange time to announce this...

New residential development planned along Haggerty in Novi would add 270-plus apartments

Quote:
Could the northeast corner of Novi support a major residential development? One proposal being considered by the city's planning commission would bring several hundred units to that part of town.

The planning commission reviewed a rezoning request for an empty piece of property on the west side of Haggerty between 12 Mile and 13 Mile during its meeting March 25, which was held remotely online due to the coronavirus pandemic in accordance with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's executive order allowing such meetings to happen online. The development would create more than 270 units in a multi-family setting across both three- and four-story buildings.
