Talking Smart City

Also, apparently Kansas City is the choice of the first major Smart City in the US.

Pretty exciting time to be living here! I'm originally from Louisville, KY and nothing ever happened out there. They are getting a new convention hotel as well though.

Photos of Hyatt convention hotel model

They had a massing model on display at the official announcement for the Hyatt convention hotel project on Monday. It's the white tower, obviously. The other white structures adjacent to it are the existing Municipal Auditorium and the Bartle Hall convention center and ballroom complex which span the I-670 highway.

Commerce Tower renderings

Renderings of the under construction renovation of the Commerce Tower were released. The downtown 32-story tower, built in 1964, will feature a mix of uses including 342 market-rate residential units in addition to some office, educational, and retail space. The CVS store that exists in the ground floor of the attached garage will also see a major overhaul / upgrade as part of this project.
Commerce Tower sits on Main Street along the under construction streetcar line and will have a station at it's doorstop. The booming rental market downtown has seen several projects snatch up underutilized or vacant office space, shrinking available supply. As the downtown job growth has now been ticking up, we are starting to see demand for new office projects as well.

Rending of a New Kansas City

Okay, so I've tried and tried to get into KCRAG.com with no luck so I guess I'll just start contributing here. I hadn't had time to prefect these but these are what are proposed, planned, under construction in and around the P&L and convention center area of downtown Kansas City.

and just for fun if Cerner and DST started building downtown...

Interesting article. Possibly another large hotel or two in the future?

Yellow models

Are the yellow "proposed" buildings real proposals or just ideas that you came up with yourself?

Most of them aren't. But hey, it's fun to imagine...and there's still plenty of potential for the Kansas City skyline to improve. There are plenty of surface parking lots that need "redeveloping" and the area where the East Village was proposed, over by the government buildings, anything is possible. I don't know the current status of East Village, but I don't think they're planning to do what was initially planned, so that may open the door for another highrise or two.

I've been away from this particular thread for awhile, but have caught wind of some of the projects being started or proposed. Great to see an anchor convention center hotel, not just proposed, but starting to look like a reality. This has been way too long and they should never have drug this through the mud....but, better late than never!!

I just made a calculation that if KC had the same population density as Charlotte, it would have a population of 857,020.

And if it had the same population density as Dallas, it would have a population of 1,148,175.

Does anybody have any old renderings of what the original design of the Sprint Center looked like before it was scaled down a tad with the glass? Thanks.

If Kansas City's inner city hadn't fled to the suburbs after WW2, the population could possibly be somewhere between 600,000-700,000. But that's my rough guesstimation!!

This was one plan...not too exciting. The plan that was originally voted, had some flying saucer look with a big ass fountain in the front, but I can't seem to find a picture of it anywhere...not on KC-Rag Forum, or even Google. The scaled back plan seemed to be more disappointing, at first, but I have to say, it looks pretty nice!! It's a great addition to Downtown KC!!
