Good to see this work being done. The East Canal Basin dock (East Dobbins Landing) has been a waterfront eyesore for decades now. It's going to be really nice when this is completed. Hoping that it will stimulate serious interest in redeveloping the McAllister site.

Also, it would be great if Smugglers' Wharf owners sold to people who actually give a shit. It could be a really nice, casual spot.

^ Good to hear that it will be opening soon. It's been over 2 decades since this waterfront tract was purchased.

The hotel is terribly ugly. But that is typical of a Scott Enterprises project. If they painted the gray and cream-colored portions white, like the upper part and horizontal lines, it would be attractive. It's so busy and just god-awful, unnecessarily ugly. What's wrong with white and brick?

So, obviously not a major development... but this kind of little stuff goes a long way towards the revitalization of the business district in Girard. Erie’s suburban “Main Street” commercial districts are pretty limited, so it’s good to see this happening in Girard (which has that classic, small town Main Street strip).

New coffee house and eatery to open in Girard

The Crick Coffee House and Eatery will soon swing it’s doors open to customers on July 13th at 6 a.m.

Tech company buys building in downtown Erie

https://www.goerie.com/business/2020...-downtown-erie

Quote:
A New Jersey-based information technology company that plans to employ 100 people in Erie has found a permanent home here.

In May 2019, privately held ValueMomentum Inc., which has 3,000 employees worldwide, announced plans to establish a regional development office in Erie.

A month later, the company, which has had a longtime business relationship with Erie Insurance, was up and running at Gannon University’s Erie Technology Incubator at 900 State St. About 30 people work at the Erie office.

Now, 14 months after its original announcement, ValueMomentum has purchased a home of its own.

On June 29, a limited liability corporation controlled by the company bought 1030 State St. from Northwest Bank for $875,000. The bank moved out of that location about two months ago, moving employees into other Erie locations, said James Martin, president of the bank’s Erie region.

The 16,900-square-foot building, which was built in 1970, has space for 100 employees, said Abhijeet Jhaveri, the company’s chief marketing officer.
He said the company is working with a local architect and hopes to complete renovations by the end of this year.

Jhaveri said that when the company first announced its plans more than a year ago, it had its sights set on a different building and was expecting to invest about $5 million on acquisition and renovation.

The size of the planned investment hasn’t changed, he said.

The company’s long-term plan for Erie, and its intent to hire 100 people within three years, hasn’t changed either, he said.

ValueMomentum has purchased this building, located at 1030 State Street. It was formerly owned by Northwest Bank.

ECAT ( Erie Center for Arts & Technology) to pump $10.3M into former Wayne school for repurpose to offices and community services.
This will bring former school back to life as a neighborhood hub for near downtown eastside.
This is the type of development that could kick start the long neglected East Ave business corridor.

Lot's of good bits of things happening in Erie! I'm generally a silent observer on this thread, but appreciate the updates! Hopefully the momentum continues.

And yeah, that Hampton Inn is lacking in architectural merits, but I understand that it represents good progress on a lot of fronts for the area. I agree, it would not have taken very much change to the exterior to make the aesthetics much better (not perfect, but better). I would abolish those horizontal white strips for starters. The interior looks about what you'd expect the inside of a new Hampton Inn to look like. Kinda faux-chic with wear-resistant materials everywhere you look.

I'm guessing that area of the hotel at the top, with the glass windows, is a restaurant?

Yes, the window walls will completely fold away for an unobstructed view of the Bayfront and Lake Erie.
Don't know for sure if you could see Canada about 25miles across the lake.
I do know when I was a kid I was able to climb on my dad's roof and you could barely see trees in Canada. Of course, it was a clear day and my eyes were much younger then

You’ll only be able to see Presque Isle Bay... it’s nowhere near tall enough to see over Presque Isle to Lake Erie. The dumb tower on the Public Dock isn’t even tall enough for that, unfortunately.

So seeing Canada is definitely out of the question. You need to be at a much higher elevation for that. The ridge on which I90 runs barely affords sight of Port Dover/Nanticoke on a clear day. The power plant smokestacks in Nanticoke were basically all that was visible, and they were demolished recently. That’s over 45 miles across the Lake from downtown Erie.

As I remember, I was about 14/15ish in the late 50's/early 60's. We lived on a hill in south Erie and our home was an old 3 level house that had a 10ft attic.

I’m glad to see this taking off. Getting the United Way as a tenant is a very good development. I hope that this can have the same type of success that Manchester Bidwell has had in Pittsburgh.

Also, it’s good to see Tom Hagen (Pennsylvania’s 2nd wealthiest person) purchase the United Way Building on West 6th. Here’s hoping that he demos that awful mistake of a building and develops that very large lot with high quality residential/office space.

Zoning Board Miss

If these would truly be "luxury" style apartments that cater to young professionals, what a great spot for such development. Pumping capital like this into a seriously depleted area that has such great potential is a GOOD THING.

Though I never post to or follow this thread, I lived in Erie for maybe 6 months back in ‘08 when my parents moved for the first time (job related). I’m almost 30 now but I still have fond memories of my brief time here. Saw Erie pop up when looking for my other cities I follow so I thought I’d drop a comment. Lived in Whispering Woods while there. Nice golf course if that’s your thing.
Presque Isle, Sarah’s Diner, and Waldameer’s are so unique. You have a lot to be proud of 😊

Not impressed by this generic garden-type apts. Their seems to be a NIMBY effect by near downtown local residents. They are afraid there might be 8 more vehicles a day on their street. They want more single family homes. Right!... Who wants to build $150/200K homes in an area that has old stock homes, most @70yrs old. Ain't gonna happen.

I'd like to see some developer come in, buy up all those $40/50K old homes
and build some tax producing properties.
