The historic Nissen Wagon Works building in Waughtown will house the operations for the WSPD South District. It was up for rezoning last year for a mix of uses. I'm not sure if other public work offices will be housed here.

We start this update with more jobs moving downtown!

T.W. Garner Food Company Headquarters Moving Downtown:
The company that makes Texas Pete Hot Sauce, Green Mountain Gringo Salsa and Tortilla Chips, along with Chilli, other types of chips, and a number of other sauces for seafood, buffalo wings, and mustard sauce and Sriracha, is moving it's headquarters to downtown. T.W. Garner's Texas Pete is among the top three hot sauces in the United States. I'm guessing they are the tenant at 760 West Fourth, but that is only a guess. 760 West Fourth is a mixed-use building that could reach 11 storeys in height, with residential, retail, and office space. They have already taken core samples and cleared the site for construction. We'll see if this is the tenant or not? This is an exciting time for office construction downtown.

Rock the Block is Now Texas Pete Culinary Festival:
One of the Carolinas largest street festivals, at 50,000 visitors, is now the Texas Pete Culinary Festival. This will be a multi-day festival and will include live music and much more. This was part of the announcement to move their headquarters downtown.

New Sculptures Downtown by Chuck Ginnever and Beverly Pepper:
The Milton Rhodes Arts Center has announced the installation of art work from Chuck Ginnever and Beverly Pepper. Their work is seen in major museums and sculpture gardens around the world. It's awesome to have work by them for everyone to enjoy downtown. This is in the Theatre District, across from the proposed hotel site.

Richard Emmett is the New Program Director at Winston-Salem's Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation:
The Winston-Salem based Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation (yes, this is the organization on the license plates) has announced that Richard Emmett is their new program director. He sees their 4,000 seat amphitheatre and 125 seat indoor theatre at the Blue Ridge Music Center as becoming a major attraction for the Winston-Salem metro area in attracting roots and Americana music fans to the area.

West Fourth Office Building:
Could this be the new J.P. Morgan Chase Building? Not really sure, but I do know the cladding is being installed! Downtown Winston-Salem's Village District is really growing fast. 760 West Fourth is proposed across the street from this building (see T.W. Garner HQ paragraph at the top of this post). There is also another building that could reach between 9-12 storeys proposed a block or two down Fourth Street from this building in the Village. Thank you to forum member roediger house (Ray) at WSTB for providing this photograph.

Union Station and the Streetcars:

The $200 million bond package includes the $18.3 million to restore the historic Union Station as the streetcar transfer station and maintenance yard. If you support Union Station restoration and the streetcars, tell your councilperson to support the $200 million bond package and be sure to vote for it.

The famed architectural firm Fellheimer and Wagner designed Winston-Salem's Union Station in 1925. The well-known railroad station architectural firm was only two years old at that time. Winston-Salem's new train station appeared in national magazines when it opened, as a beautiful showplace. According to state historian Catherine Bisher, Union Station was built by "Southern, Norfolk and Western, and Winston-Salem Southbound lines at a time when Winston-Salem was the richest city in the state." Winston-Salem was also the state's largest city back then. It is the state's tallest multi-storey train station. They have an agreement for the 12-county regional transit agency (PART) to move their headquarters to the second floor after completion.

Bond Package Provides $15 million to the IQ District:
If you support continued development of the IQ District, tell your councilperson to support the $200 million bond package and be sure to vote for it. The $200 million bond package provides $15 million to build infrastructure for 6.5 million square feet of tech office space, 300 hotel rooms, thousands of apartments/condos, and beautiful park spaces with signature pedestrian/bike bridges. They already have tenant interest for buildings on some of the development sites available. It could include two large headquarters relocations from other states to downtown Winston-Salem. This project is projected to bring 25,000 new office workers to downtown.

"Falls of Bath" Park Downtown:
The land that contains The Falls of Bath in Salem Gorge is now property of the IQ District downtown development team. It will become the centerpiece for a park on the southern end of Downtown Winston-Salem's IQ District. The 12 foot (3.7 meter) waterfall will be viewed from a new pedestrian & bike bridge, to be designed by a famous unnamed architect/designer, over the deep gorge, providing beautiful views of the falls! Not many cities have a waterfall in a gorge just 7 blocks south of their tallest skyscraper. This will likely become downtown Winston-Salem's most beautiful park and a great place to relax!

You can see the new Childrens' Museum and One Salem Tower office building. The bridge is around 200 years old and was strengthened a few years ago.

Is that One Salem Tower (above)? I love the tunnel that allows bicyclists to cycle under the building. Awesome! If you bike to work from Hilltop House South, you could use that tunnel every day. It has an entrance so workers in One Salem Tower can bike commute.

Link Apartments:
The largest residential development in downtown Winston-Salem's Village District. This is located across the street from the new ballpark.

You know you're in Winston-Salem's development thread when you see houses around 200 years old being restored. The new owner of the Salt Flax House has applied to the local historic resources commission to do a full restoration, valued at $200,000. The house was originally a trading post in 1815. It became a house around 1850. Margaret Bullock bought the house and is paying for the restoration. She intends to make it her new home. Salt Street is part of the Old Salem National Landmark District in Lower Downtown. I think a famous poet was born on this street in the 1800s?

The Glade at West End:
I was trying to think... what is a project we haven't seen an update on at SSP? Then I found The Glade and did a search for it. I found this on the architect's website. This is an adaptive reuse project of a former YWCA into condos. Really awesome! I apologize for the small images.



Winston-Salem Cycling Classic:
The Winston-Salem Cycling Classic is back in downtown Winston-Salem on April 18-19. This is one of Winston-Salem's major league sports events. It is "one of the three biggest criterium bike races in America." There is also an 80 mile ride through Winston-Salem's wine country that is open to all cyclists! This is an international sports event, with teams from several countries. Last year's event had teams from Panama, Columbia, Belgium, Slovenia, and many more. With the popularity of cycling in Winston-Salem, they have a large amount of sponsor money and offer large purses. I seem to remember riders from Argentina last year said it was one of the highest paying events in cycling.

105 residential units could be coming to downtown. The Heights on Patterson Ave is working with Laurel Residential out of Charlotte to develop the parcel at MLK and Patterson diagonally opposite the new Inmar headquarters. The number of residential units jumped from 50-105 with this new proposal.

Renderings should be available soon pending city approval.

The Heights at Patterson was added to our list on January 22, 2014. I do need to update the details on it, which we didn't have back then. It's great to see at least a third of the parking hidden under the building. Their last building also had half of its parking hidden under the building.

Central Library:
The library's board has selected Indianapolis-based Ratio Architects to design the new Central Library. They actually want to start construction by this summer?

Bailey Park at East End:
Construction starts this week in downtown's IQ District on Bailey Park at East End. A 1.6 acre park proposed to have water features, a concert stage with terraced seating for 250 people, restrooms, a food truck area with seating, and they will reuse old electrical pylons saved from the original site as art work (the site of the park was once part of the power plant across the street)! Awesome! Construction of the park will be paid for by San Diego based developer BioMed Realty Trust and WFIQ. LMI Builders is the General Contractor. Though it is being built with private money from developers, to enhance their tech office developments, it is a public park anyone can use. The park should open by Fall 2014.

Building 60-1 & 60-3 (owned by Wake Forest University) on the map is the future location of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and their medical library, which will feature a courtyard that opens to Bailey Park. Bailey Power Plant (by Cross Street Partners / Bill Struever) is an entertainment and retail complex, with a movie theatre, bowling alley, dance theatre stage, innovation center, and restaurants, that is expected to open in 2015.

Big Winston Warehouse Retail Complex:
Another Distillery in Winston-Salem? A distillery (whiskey, vodka, gin, rum) has signed a lease for the Big Winston Warehouse retail development. Big Winston Warehouse is a nearly 40,000 square foot adaptive reuse project, converting an old warehouse into a large retail development in the downtown Arts District. The distillery filed a $53,410 construction permit this week.

Plant 64 Lofts:
A construction update on Plant 64, provided by General Contractor Capstone.

I love Plant 64's retail building. They plan to finish it in just two more months! The entire project should be finished by September 2014.

A New Italian Butcher Shop Downtown: Quanto Basta!
I usually don't post all of the restaurant/retail developments, but this appears to be a nice amenity for downtown residents. Quanto Basta is a 5,000-square-foot Italian restaurant, wine bar and market, being built by a Fourth-generation restaurateur from Hudson, N.Y.,. Tim Grandinetti will open his business in late spring at Fourth and Spring streets. Not only is this a restaurant and a place for your morning espresso; it’s also a specialty market for items such as super-premium Italian salumi and cheeses, based on similar neighborhood butcher shops in Brooklyn and Manhattan, according to Gradinetti. According to permits, this is $982,000 project.

Streetcar Update:
The city is close to holding a vote on the bond package that contains the streetcar funding! You will have a chance to vote on it this year! Register to vote now and tell your city councilperson to support the $200 million bond package. Your councilperson needs to hear from you that you support the $200 million bond package. The streetcar will have some dedicated ROW. Rams Drive will have dedicated two-way streetcar-only lanes. Also notable is Fifth Street, where the turning lane will be removed to create special two-way streetcar only lanes. They will also lower this lane around Chestnut Street, which should be interesting to see when completed.

Construction costs include 8 of these low-power substations; which can be hidden in basements, parking decks or behind landscaping:



The poles in the overhead contact system are spaced 110 feet apart. They are usually spaced 100-120 feet apart, but 110 feet gives the city room to move the poles around if needed, due to pipes or other underground utilities. The system will use a single contact wire. The poles can also be used for streetlights.





The city will have to construct a 9,000 square foot facility to work on the streetcars as part of the Union Station project. It will have a capacity for two vehicles. It appears as if the city initially wanted to use the lower floor of Union Station as the repair shop and cleaning center. Unfortunately, the steep terrain prevented this. They will use a parking lot, built for the train station in 1947, as the site of the maintenance yard.



Union Station will become Winston-Salem's second transit hub. One day, I should share a detailed post on Union Station in this thread. The project to restore it is exciting. It's the most intact historic train station in the state. They have everything from original baggage carts to original fountains. The streetcar project will make it a transfer facility for city bus, taxi, Greyhound, and eventually commuter rail.

Cladding work continues!

Yes, Winston-Salem is one of those "keep it weird" cities. One of the more fun ways Winston-Salem keeps it weird every year is with the light project. This year, the city's cycle tracks, leading from Washington Park to downtown, will have motion sensitive lighting! The lighting will reveal hidden movement, as people travel along the cycle tracks into the city. Look for the lighting to start March 21, from dusk to dawn (all-night). The arches covering the cycle tracks will be constructed of auburn-colored fabric and lit with custom-made lighting fixtures that react to motion. When viewing this from a distance, you'll see the rhythm of movement in pulses of light, as people enter or leave the city. Norman Coates is one of the famous artists that live in Winston-Salem and he is behind the Light Project every year. He has designed the lighting for over 300 theatrical productions and his work has been seen on 5 continents. On Broadway: The News and Prince of Central Park. Off-Broadway credits include the Roundabout Theatre, Circle in the Square, The Lion Theatre, Westbeth Theater, Provincetown Playhouse, Equity Library Theatre. National and International tours include: The Who’s Tommy, Guys and Dolls, Camelot and Encounter 500. Norman’s Regional theater credits include The Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, American Stage Festival, PlayMakers Repertory, Burt Reynolds’ Jupiter Theatre, and Hirschfield Theatre. His opera credits include work for, The Princeton Festival, Virginia Opera, Fort Worth Opera and Opera Pacific. Norman is a member of United Scenic Artists and was a charter member of Winston-Salem chapter of IESNA. I don't think many people realize how many awesome artists live in this city!

I would like to move here one day too. I've enjoyed following construction in Winston-Salem and exploring this city's history since my first visit in the mid-1990s.

An interesting past week:

U.S. Olympic Cycling Training Center:
505 North Liberty Street, in downtown Winston-Salem, is the leading site for the elite U.S. Olympic cycling training facility. Steve Johnson and other USA Cycling officials visited the site during USA Cycling's November convention in Winston-Salem. Steve Johnson, president and chief executive of USA Cycling, wrote a letter on March 10 for the U.S. Olympic Committee, supporting the downtown Winston-Salem site. Johnson wrote “I believe you have the right group of people, the necessary support of your local government and other public officials, and the corporate sponsors to both develop this training facility and make it sustainable. I believe this building has wonderful potential to develop the programs necessary to become an elite training facility, as well as serve the local community and region in general population health and wellness.” Richard Rauck said the building is in the process of being purchased. Construction could start in Summer 2014 and work could be completed by 2015. They are currently waiting on final approval from the U.S. Olympic Committee and yes, the building would have the five-rings on it. It is expected to attract the top cyclists to downtown Winston-Salem for training. The training center will be financially self-sufficient, with corporate sponsorships, retail and health-care tenants. They will also take advantage of historic tax credits in renovating the 1908 structure. Winston-Salem has become a fast-growing center for cycling in the past few years.

Did anyone else notice Plant 64's Chris Harrison owns the site where a parking deck hidden behind apartments was proposed? The city gave IQ developers around $2 million in incentives for the parking deck and apartments project late last year.

Streetcar Update:
Winston-Salem City Council endorsed a route for the proposed $179 million streetcar by a 7-1 vote. Can you guess how many Republicans are on the city council: 1

Hotel Indigo:
dtws @ WSTB reported the 23-storey building at 401 North Main Street was lit in Hotel Indigo colors along two corners. This could be part of a lighting test for a big announcement to happen this week? This building is often lit in different colors for big events in the city. The boutique hipster hotel would likely cost around $50-60 million.

Olaeris Headquarters:
It appears we may now know the name of the company looking at the corner site (on the Bath Waterway, near the expressways) in the central district of downtown Winston-Salem's IQ District. Olaeris would create 200 engineering and programing jobs, in addition to their corporate headquarters. The company expects their headquarters and research center will bring thousands of jobs to downtown Winston-Salem during the next ten years. An electronics component company that works with Olaeris has also agreed to locate near their new research hub. The company would likely work with Wake Forest University's Small Unmanned Aerial Systems Lab. They are currently waiting on the State General Assembly to develop regulations governing the use of drones before building anything.

This is another building we haven't seen an update for on SSP!

Foothills Brewing:
Foothills is one of only 12 beer vendors in the country to achieve greater than $1 million in new product sales in 2013. #1 on the list is Anheuser-Busch InBev. Foothills ranked 10th on that list. Foothills’ top selling new beer is the Hoppyum IPA 6-packs which, according to marketing research firm IRI, was the 5th-best selling new craft beer in its category in the entire country, and the 8th-best selling new package overall. Nearly all of the beers on the lists are distributed nationally. Foothills is only distributed to four states and Washington D.C., making this news even more impressive. Foothills is one of the top craft brewing operations in the southeast United States. They are ranked among ratebeer.com’s 100 best breweries in the world and won numerous awards for their beers, including seven Great American Beer Festival medals and three World Cup Beer medals. This is more than any other brewery in North Carolina. Foothills will continue their expansion with a big announcement expected in Summer 2014. If you love Foothills' beer, visit their headquarters in downtown Winston-Salem, which includes a restaurant and brewery! They are on the Fourth Street Restaurant Row.

Graylyn International Conference Center:

Sims Patrick Studio's work on Graylyn International Conference Center won an Award of Merit at the 9th annual International Interior Design Association's Design Awards. Graylyn was built as the second largest house in Winston-Salem, by Bowman Gray. Bowman Gray's father founded Wachovia National Bank, the bank that funded the growth of Winston-Salem and the South. This house was a "blank check" type of project. You've likely seen his name on the art deco Bowman Gray Stadium and the Bowman Gray University School of Medicine, which also has a statue of him in a courtyard. If you've never seen Graylyn before, it is an actual castle in Winston-Salem's historic and upscale Reynolda Neighborhood. Everyone from Oprah to Presidents have stayed here. Many people have fallen in love with this castle, which even had its own polo grounds. If you've ever wanted to get married at a castle, you can rent Graylyn for weddings.

A big update this week! It's exciting, as you can see in the above post!

50 West Fourth Apartments:
Construction workers have now closed the sidewalks and all parallel parking spaces along the side of the streets at 50 West Fourth Street, so be prepared for this, if you visit.

525@Vine:
600 Workers and 1,200 students should start their move into this building in a few weeks. A health/fitness club has just recently opened on the ground floor, if you're interested in working-out in the IQ District... and seeing the inside of this building. I've seen this building called "The Tower Building" by some sources? What is the correct name? Developer BioMed Realty Trust is calling it 525@Vine?

A $2 million street scape project will completely transform the ugly street scape, by burying power lines, building new sidewalks, adding new "contemporary" LED streetlights, and burying new fiber lines.

Bailey Park at East End:
Yes, the fences are up and construction is underway at Bailey Park at East End! Did you know: Winston-Salem has nearly 60 acres of park space planned or under construction right now! The IQ District, where Bailey Park at East End is located, will have a large collection of inter-connected park spaces designed around walking, cycling, and a "future" light rail system.

Inmar Headquarters:
Since TwinCity already posted on it, I moved it down further on the list. Inmar has officially opened their new headquarters. We can now remove it from the construction list. It's an adaptive reuse project, converting a mid-century modern industrial building to Class A tech office space, in downtown Winston-Salem's IQ District. As always, we will share completion photographs. The building was designed for 1,500 employees. Currently, nearly 1,000 workers have moved into this building and more will move in soon (see hiring paragraph below).

Sculpture at the Ballpark:

This iconic building was once a multi-block 200+ foot (61+ meters) tall monster, operating 24/7 and consuming 5 train carloads of coal a day. The big silos held 600 tons of coal to fire 5 huge boilers, providing electricity and steam for the entire city. The power plant was bought from the Bailey Brothers by RJR to power their growing factory complex and RJR expanded the power plant in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. The large block, where Bailey Park @ East End is located, was once part of the power plant complex, along with part of the block on the other side. It was big! Demolition and remediation brought it down to what you see today, which is still a massive structure. All expansions built after 1949 were demolished as part of the remediation and demolition. The beast was shut-down in 1997.

This should be an awesome place when they finish with it. Being surrounded by thousands of students, thousands of residents, workers at large headquarters, a future hotel, a proposed streetcar stop, movies in the park, the tech jobs nearby, and thousands of workers; it shouldn't take long to find a developer for this phase and lease the building. They talk as if the plans are drawn-up by their architects for this phase and they just need a developer to partner with them to move this phase forward?

Taxed by the Mile:
The state is looking into a tax on the total miles driven. This should become a sprawl tax that could help encourage more people to live in the city and use transportation alternatives, like cycling, walking, or transit.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EV Charging):
The free electric car charging stations, operated by the City of Winston-Salem, will soon cost money to use. Those wanting to charge at the stations will have to pay between $1.50-$2.00 an hour, starting in May 2014. Winston-Salem is planning to add more EV charging stations around the city, due to their popularity. According to the release, Winston-Salem is one of only four cities in North Carolina offering EV charging stations.

I-74 Corporate Center:
Ralph Lauren is building two new buildings in the corporate park, totaling 1.22 million square feet and will create 1,115 new jobs. The I-74 Corporate Center is near Caterpillar, Herbalife, and Union Cross Business Park.

Wake Forest University Medical Center:
Wake Forest University Medical Center is on Becker’s Hospital Review 100 Great Hospitals in America. It's also among the busiest teaching hospitals in the nation.

Wake Forest University Business School:
Wake Forest University’s undergraduate business program was ranked No. 11 in the nation by Bloomberg Businessweek's new Best Undergraduate Business Schools. The school was also ranked first in the nation for academic quality for the sixth consecutive year.

The power plant would make a really great renovation. We did something with a similarly sized historic power plant here in downtown Lansing on the river a few years ago. An insurance company completely gutted it and built some floors inside and added a glass-and-steel annex (Ottawa Street Station). Hopefully, you guys can find something more mixed-use, but architecturally, the project turned out beautifully.

Ottawa Street Station is among my favorites and has interesting brickwork, which creates a color change. Bailey Power Plant was originally an 1880s building that was expanded over and over. Bailey's remaining buildings are from 1926-1949, giving Bailey Power Plant a Streamline Moderne style. I don't think any of the original 1880s buildings, built by the Baileys, are still standing? I looked into other power plants and have noticed many of them became office buildings. I think Austin's will become an office building with a restaurant? Bailey Power Plant is planned as an entertainment centerpiece for the IQ District. They are calling it the “iconic spiritual center” of the IQ District. This is great, because anyone can walk into Bailey Power Plant and see the building, while having fun. They have made it clear they want a movie theatre in the building. I know River Run Film Festival is in need of more venues downtown.

According to the team from Baltimore that is working on it, it "will" include restaurants, a cinema, flexible office space, the world's largest kaleidoscopes (using smokestacks), the smokestacks may also have sculptural art over them, a conference center and maybe a bowling alley. Optional uses they are considering include an innovation center, entertainment venues (a dance troupe is close to leasing space for a dance theatre), and a museum (possibly SciWorks).



Cobblestone Market is talking with them about opening an urban grocery store in the Morris Building on the southwest corner of the Bailey Power Plant property. You can see part of the word "grocery" on the building in the photograph above.

Bailey Park @ East End will use the original electrical pylons on the park site as art work in the park.

Here are the plans. All five floors of it! Note the theatre is a fixed item labeled over retail and also includes the theatre lobby. Also, did you see the Future Phase in the floor plans below? There aren't any buildings there. That would be new construction.

CDI had it's topping-out ceremony a couple days ago in the South District of the research park. This is the first of many academic buildings for this area.

Did you know the National Center for Design Innovation is expandable? They expect usage to be so high, they will have to double it in size. This is planned into the design. That is awesome! I'm really excited to see the impact of this.

MASSIVE UPDATE this week!

Next Generation Gigabit Network:
AT&T U-verse with GigaPower will start construction on a gigabit next generation network in Winston-Salem on April 22 (NEXT WEEK!). This is an all fiber ultra-high-speed network (fiber to the home). It's expected to be in use by the end of this year! If you live in Winston-Salem or if you're moving to Winston-Salem, this is exciting news. AT&T will also offer a free gigabit hotspot downtown as part of the project. This is both fiber to the home and wireless and the speeds are the same on both. The wireless uses the latest technology to penetrate deep into concrete and steel buildings. Yes, you could have free ultra high speed wireless internet if you move downtown. This is 10 times faster than what most people use. According to AT&T, you can download 25 songs in one second, a television show in 3 seconds and an online movie in less than 36 seconds! WOW! It's great to be a tech city, isn't it!

Look for another announcement soon by RST on offering gigabit speeds in Winston-Salem. Having two companies offering gigabit networks is even better news!

Flywheel is a new downtown co-working space started by three local technology and design companies. Flywheel will offer flexible short-term and long-term memberships, allowing access to both open and enclosed work spaces and support services 24 hours per day, seven days a week. The owners want to attract venture capitalist and intellectual property experts to help members as well. Flywheel is a knowledge-sharing environment, driven by innovation, and not just a place for people to work. Brad Bennett said “What we want is cross pollination… people looking to others to help them build. So you might have a graphic artist working with a programmer working with a clinical application to create a new idea.” The co-working innovation space will have a “knowledge concierge” staff person available to help members connect with professional services and will also arrange for networking and learning opportunities on a regular basis. Part of Flywheel's space will include a basketball court that can be converted into an auditorium for events that will be open to the community. Membership is limited to 300.

Bailey Power Plant:
Construction could start as soon as September? They will likely select the same San Diego based developer who is buying and renovating other historic industrial buildings in downtown's IQ District (Yes, BioMed Realty Trust), but they are listening to other developers. If you are a developer and you're interested in taking part, contact Cross Street Partners today! I'm guessing the same Baltimore architects will be selected as well? Their work is very impressive though. BioMed Realty seems an odd choice to build a massive entertainment center, but they really love downtown Winston-Salem. They are also paying for part of Bailey Park @ East End. BioMed Realty Trust could have another half-million square feet, in two buildings, under renovation by the end of the year? That is likely another quarter-billion-dollars in investment too? WOW!

Plant 64 Lofts:
Did you know downtown Winston-Salem has at least two old power plants. I think there may be as many as three or four old power plants downtown? Here (image below) is another power plant in the IQ District! It was built in 1922! It's worth noting: Plant 64's address is 545 Power Plant Circle. This power plant is located in the middle of their multi-building complex and it's an awesome building.

Ranked among the nation's top farmers markets, the Cobblestone Farmers Market is back. If you're new to downtown or moving to Winston-Salem, I thought you may want to know about this. I think they are at a new location, at Sixth and Trade streets (Mary's)? It appears as if construction in the IQ District has forced them to move away from the cobblestone street the market is named for. Maybe they will return to Fogle Street, when construction on the north sites are completed?

Flash-mob on 5th Street:
A flash-mob of barbershop singers blocked traffic on 5th Street, across from Small Batch Brewery, to sing loudly in the street on Saturday. I wanted to post a video, after discovering they had a drone video-recording the event, but sadly I couldn't find a good video. Keep Winston-Salem weird.

Winston-Salem Cycling Classic:
Winston-Salem is known as a sport cycling and tennis city and hosts "major league" events in those two sports that attract the best competitors from around the world. One of those events is this weekend! The Winston-Salem Cycling Classic is the nation's top competitive cycling event, according to USA Cycling. It attracts cycling teams from around the world to downtown Winston-Salem. Speeds can reach 60 mph (97 km/h)! If you love bicycles and sport cycling, this is your event! The excitement begins on Friday at 8:30 in the morning and continues into Saturday. The event will be broadcast on NBC Sports. This event is on my "must see" list!

Did anyone watch Inside Man on CNN? Downtown Winston-Salem's IQ District was on the show, as Morgan Spurlock looked for answers on how to live forever. It was a good chance to hear from the scientists and see the technology at the Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

Olympic Cycling Center:
We now have renderings and more details on this exciting addition to downtown, thanks to WSTB. In addition to the training center, the Olympic Cycling Center will also have a health food store, cafe, 4 apartments (could be for Olympic cyclists only?), a medical office, and Olympic approved courses through downtown. It will use both the Main Street and Liberty Street storefronts (health food store and cafe). Yes, this is where the U.S. Olympic Cycling Team and the Paralympic Cycling Team will train to compete on the world cycling stage. It should become a fun tourist attraction and a great amenity for downtown residents. They are still completing the purchase of the building and waiting on final approval from the USOC. They will start construction as soon as they own the building. The building is expected to open in late 2015! Winston-Salem is fast becoming the center of the sport cycling world and it's fun to follow this. I would like to bring my bike on a future visit, when this opens. Wouldn't it be fun to complete at least one lap on the same downtown Winston-Salem course Team USA trains on!

Construction Will Start Soon on the Olympic Cycling Center and It Will Open by Late 2015!

Gigabit Next Generation Network:
AT&T should start design and construction this week on the gigabit network in Winston-Salem. They received final approval today from Winston-Salem and Winston-Salem will have one of their major hubs for the state (possibly downtown's IQ District or the Reynolda District). The city will help them advertise in exchange for AT&T offering free gigabit speed wireless to downtown and the IQ District. They also agreed to offer gigabit connectivity at community centers and AT&T agreed to lower the costs for small and medium businesses to connect to the gigabit network. AT&T is in a race to be the first to offer gigabit speeds. It should be up-and-running by the Fall of this year. Yes, Fall 2014! A large part of the fiber network is already built in Winston-Salem! If you're moving to Winston-Salem, this is a nice amenity. You can download an entire movie in seconds! Very few cities have gigabit speed internet service. Austin is the only city AT&T offers gigabit next generation network service to currently. It's good to add Winston-Salem to the list.

IQ District Jobs:
We are waiting for a big announcement involving 500 new science and technology jobs, to be created in the downtown district by the end of this year. They haven't said who is creating the jobs yet, so look for a big announcement soon. I'm very excited about this! According to AURP and developers, the IQ District is the fastest growing research and technology district in the United States. It's also one of the nation's biggest economic development projects.

IQ District In the National/International News:
This month, downtown Winston-Salem's IQ District has appeared on the BBC, CNN, Wall Street Journal, and I think it was in the NY Times? Stories covered everything from scientific breakthroughs to the adaptive reuse projects we talk about in this thread. So what did we learn for our thread? ...Downtown Winston-Salem's IQ District has received the most adaptive reuse tax credits in the state! WOW! And the number for Winston-Salem should double before the tax credits sunset next year. This has helped preserve the historic character of Winston-Salem. According to someone at WSTB, it appears as if all of downtown's noteworthy buildings to be renovated will receive these tax credits before the sunset. The other big stories involving the IQ District are connected to scientists growing organs and body parts in labs. Winston-Salem is the world's leading center for Regenerative Medicine and their discoveries appear frequently in international news. It's a place where scientists can use your own cells to print organs with 3D printers. They can make anything from new skin to a new finger to a new heart.

Hanestowne Village:
The 550,000 square foot Hanes Knitting Complex is being demolished. The buildings under demolition are mostly newer structures (built after 1965?). This industrial complex is surrounded by retail and offices, so it's really out-of-place. The entire complex will be demolished for a mixed-use development that includes office space and retail. This is a possible future TOD (transit oriented development). A future light rail station is proposed across the street, with a bridge connection.

More Jobs:
Ashley is adding 450 more jobs than originally expected. There is talk their headquarters could move to Winston-Salem and some are saying downtown? It's a Fortune 500 company, so it's a good headquarters to have. I guess we will see what happens.

Winston-Salem Cycling Classic:
Around 30 countries competed in downtown Winston-Salem over the weekend and 2015 could be the biggest and best cycling classic yet! Look for the addition of a two-day road race!

Cycling Sunday:
Downtown Residents: Don't forget, Sunday April 27th is Cycling Sunday! The streets downtown are closed to traffic and open to cyclists. Walkers and skaters are also welcome.

Winston-Salem Writers:
