As downtown Tampa surges, there's little developable land left in the central business district

By Ashley Gurbal Kritzer – Senior Reporter, Tampa Bay Business Journal
May 16, 2018, 2:35pm EDT Updated 12 hours ago

Despite its reputation as a sprawling, car-dependent metro, downtown Tampa has one of the densest central business districts in the U.S. — according to one new report that studied available CBD land in 25 cities.

According to the study from Commercial Cafe, a commercial real estate blog, Tampa has 6.29 total acres of vacant land in the CBD, ranking at the bottom of the list of 25 markets that Commercial Cafe analyzed.

Dallas topped the list with more than 86 acres of vacant CBD land.

Would it really strain Marriott's budge to add some balconies to that hotel? I only stay in hotels with balconies!

Jacksonville developer teed up to build on-site office tower and parking deck at Tampa International Airport

By Ashley Gurbal Kritzer – Senior Reporter, Tampa Bay Business Journal
Apr 4, 2019, 8:51am EDT

The Tampa International Airport is poised to make a deal with a Jacksonville developer to build a nine-story office building and parking garage on airport property.

The office tower is a key part of the second phase of the airport's multibillion-dollar master plan. The second phase kicked off construction in January, and the majority of construction is to be complete in May 2020.

Developers of 53-story mixed-use Riverwalk Place to begin external demolition of CapTrust building in downtown Tampa

By Ashley Gurbal Kritzer – Senior Reporter, Tampa Bay Business Journal
13 hours ago

The developers of the 53-story Riverwalk Place will begin external demolition of the CapTrust building, a process expected to take more than a month and affect traffic patterns in downtown Tampa.

The developers — a partnership of Tampa's Feldman Equities and West Palm Beach-based Two Roads Development — said they will begin external demolition on July 8. Internal demolition of the building has been under way since at least early May.

The 53-story condo tower is proposed on the Tampa Riverwalk, at the intersection of Ashley Drive and Brorein Street.

As of right now, this is cancelled. A redesign and addition of a hotel is allegedly coming, but one of the equity partners also pulled out in March.

I'd say this entire development is hanging on by a thread at this stage.

That's sad, I wonder if the redesign will be as tall/cool looking

The Water Street district is probably one of the highest concentrations of tower & luffing cranes in the country in such a small area.

It's funny I was just the other day wondering how the progress in this area had been going as of late. Thanks for the update!

Thanks FLBlake for starting the Tampa thread. I grew up just south of Tampa & remember well when I was a kid there was only one skyscraper in the downtown area. I think the skyline has progressed rather well!

Across the bay in St. Petersburg, the new proposed tallest, 400 Central, has gained FAA approval and Red Apple announces a 2021 construction start, but no specific month or quarter yet.

Wow, had no idea Tampa had that amount of activity. The Water Street cluster looks great.

19-story apartment building proposed for downtown

The project at 601 12th Street was made public almost 2 weeks ago and will be located near the massive Water Street development. Containing 324 apartments, completion is slated for fall 2022.

Riverwalk Place is now One Ashley

A renaming, redesign, and hefty reduction in height has given rise to One Ashley. I hope it looks better in person because the renderings are pretty bland, very Edgewater district in Miami.

The waterfront walk looks cool, but man, the massing of that that thing is pretty awful. They should break up that slab and let some light through.

Yeah, hopefully that gets reviewed and changed. Such a prominent site deserves something better than this.
