I wish the Mall still stood. Something tells me it could have converted to office space, city services or something to keep some nostalgia in the area. Kinda like the Hickory Ridge Mall thats operating under World Overcomers Church. The land below it must have had more value vacant, being right near 1-40

Apartments with a crust of retail proposed next to Gus’s chicken

Quote:
A Downtown developer seeks a zoning variance for a $30 million project that would put 165 new apartments and 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail in both historic and new buildings, all within the aroma zone of Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken restaurant.

Representatives for Tom Intrator’s 18 Main LLC will go before the Board of Adjustment at 2 p.m., Aug. 26, seeking permission to exceed the residential density limits placed on new construction in the South Main Historic District.

210 units for Nylon Net Building, Oakhaven warehouse approved

Quote:
Developer Chance Carlisle of the Carlisle Corp., which is also building the One Beale mixed-use development a few blocks to the north, plans to preserve the most historic and architecturally detailed parts of the building at 7 Vance.

The plan is to preserve at least the bottom 20 feet of the masonry exterior on the building’s north side, at Vance and Wagner, as well as a distinctive smokestack on the north side.

A 1970s-era addition on the south side will be demolished.

The Ravine is about to take shape

Quote:
Construction is to start next week to turn a two-block-long, 25-foot-deep depression that divides the Edge District into a social seam for gathering, playing, entertainment, public art, eating and even shopping.

Phase I alone is to cost about $1 million for The Ravine, a rails-to-park project that’s taken about a year longer than planned to get started.

Fairgrounds becomes ‘Liberty Park’ in latest post-pandemic plan

Latest plan for the fairgrounds. I guess we'll see what actually pans out. Looks like they're going to start phase 1 construction next year.

https://dailymemphian.com/section/me...wl-libertyland

Quote:
The Fairgrounds will become Liberty Park, with an indoor sports complex and hotels, under the city’s latest push to redevelop the 168-acre public property while emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The rebrand, announced Thursday, Aug. 13, has a 2022 target date for opening of the first phases. A letter of intent from Capstone Development of Washington D.C. calls for developing two hotels of about 200 rooms total.

Trade group plan would turn Memphis into a seaport for container ships on Mississippi River

Some big news here.

https://www.commercialappeal.com/sto...go/3365353001/

Quote:
A Louisiana group has proposed putting ships on the Mississippi River and making Memphis a seaport.

Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District on Thursday announced a letter of intent to explore building special container ships that would call regularly on the Port of Memphis.

Barges pushed by towboats currently move on the river at Memphis but not ocean-going ships, which are barred by the low bridges just upriver from New Orleans.

This is a very nice project, and well overdue. It will change the face of that property and area. Two things i noticed, The CA interview with Mary Claire Borys stated that Texas-based Cinergy Entertainment will not be a part of the project. That IMO opent the door for Topgolf to be on the grounds of Liberty Park. 2) I noticed the coca cola plant adjacent to Liberty park is no longer showing on JLL power search, hmmm wonder if the city of memphis has purchased the property. That 17 acres could be a huge asset. Possible new Stadium RR not with standing. Build a land bridge to connect. IMO

"Texas Live!"? I hope so, I saw a few months ago that's the type of venue they are aiming for. I hope they would get involved.

I got a brochure from Viking Cruises showing artwork of their new passenger ship and some beginning itineraries. Memphis will be an end port with add on packages for extended stays after the cruise. Oddly, nothing that begins in Memphis is listed.

I wonder if that hull for the container ship leads to a passenger version that would explode economies of scale.

MEM is gaining a daily nonstop to Indy via Delta on a Republic 76 seater in Oct. There's lots of slack to try things and I'm sure FedEx worked out a deal to bring deadheading pilots and IT folks back and forth. There are supposedly restarting LAX in the fall as well. BOS has been pushed back to Jan.
