^^^ I LOVE your radio story UrbanSky. Thanks for sharing your memories.

You've seen pictures of the antenna haven't you? It was also a giant thermometer as well / showing Chicagoans the temperature with a vertical line of red lights.

Here's a cool pic of Marina City under construction.

Interesting how just about everything in the pic is covered with grime & soot, yet the Wrigley looks fairly clean. Perhaps because of the terra cotta?

I didn't realize there used to be a sign on top of the InterContinental Hotel.
Does it say Sheraton Chicago?

a bit of sad news this morning from Marina City:

Apparent suicide jumper at Marina Towers
March 25, 2009 9:56 AM

The State Street bridge over the Chicago River was closed this morning after a body -- an apparent suicide -- was found lying face down on the street near Marina Towers.

The body was next to a crushed red four-door sedan parked along the curb. The car's windshield, roof and driver's side door were smashed.

Earlier reports indicated the body was of a woman, but a police official at the scene said it was a man in his 50s who apparently jumped from the 28th floor.

in the city at large, i have no idea. i've heard that the media tries to downplay suicide jumps to avoid glamorizing it and to prevent copy-cats who are depressed and looking for some attention.

but i do know from reading the marina city blog that there have been two other suicide jumpers at marina city within the past 10 years.

sad.

The media does the same thing regarding Metra. The public hears of about 4 or 5 fatalities per year as a result of collisions, etc. but in reality there are about 20/year, mostly suicide.

I used the river walk Wednesday in front of Marina Towers/ Smith & Wolinski around 10am only to end up in front of a jumper crime scene between Marina Tower East & IBM in State St. Didn't need to see that. Very sad.

I am so fortunate to have these buildings as part of my everyday scenery for the past several decades.

I lived here from 2005-2007:

A lot of good memories... I had probably the best view from my unit of the filming of the car crash commercial and after of the car suspended from the west tower.

I remember going to the house of blues for a fallout boy concert a while back.
I think it was like the coldest day of the year.

as things get more serious with my girlfirend, it looks like my days living at marina city may be coming to an end sometime in 2012.

at the same time, i don't want to be a bachelor living in a 500 SF studio forever

The John Hancock may have more space, or Aqua.

It's not that I'd be looking for a new place, it's just looking very likely that I will be "officially" moving into my girlfriend's condo over in the west loop (I'm already practically living there now as it is, she's got a 1 bedroom that's about twice the size of my place). If I can unload my place for anything close to what I bought it for, it'd be smart to get out from that mortgage and start saving my money for a place we can start a family in.

Does anyone have an image or at least knowledge on how the Hotel Sax in the Marina City Complex attaches to its base floors other than the arched stilts visible at street level? I'm looking for where it connects to the base for stairwell/elevator usage.

Lower Level

House of Blues

Looking S from Dearborn - Marina City on the Right, Sax on the Left

Sax reciving on far Left

Looking S under State st, Museum of Broadcast/Sax on the left.

SAX reciving (Harry Cary's/Kinzie is up the ramp on the Left)

More Lower Level photos

and my favorite (looking S twords Marina City)

This is for the line that runs through the Merchandise Mart (that low bridge that is always up), down lower Carol, between Marina City/SAX, swings out to Kinzie going past Trump (old spur went in the Sun Times bldg.), between the towers of the Wrigley building, and then E to the slips (which reached to Park st. then).
