Probably a bar. A bar is going on the top of Beetham West with views right into North Wales. Beetham WEst is the thin tower to the right - 2/3 complete.

A quick measurement using google earth shows that the furthest length the platforms can reach is about 310 metres though.

Couldn't see how else Lime Street could be expanded without knocking down buildings at the side of the throat and lengthening the platforms.

Apparently it can. If any alterations it would only be minor.

The platforms could extend right to the end of the concourse and have the concourse raised with rams down to the platforms.

I found this place while SkyscraperCity was playing up and thought I’d add a bit of fresh info to the thread. It’s an update to the major developments, I know there is a lot I am missing out but I am just going to focus on the big projects for now.

The canal at the pier head
This is already underway and should be completed later this year.
Progress as of June 2008:

New museum at the pier head
This is well under construction, the main frame is complete and the building should be finished by the end of the year or early next year. It is set to open in 2010.
Progress as of June 2008:

Mann Island
This consists of apartments in wedge shaped blocks at one end of the pier head. Work has started on site but it is only a hole in the ground at the minute so there is no point in posting a photo.

The official site is http://www.mann-island.com/

A model of the development:

The quarter/Vermont tower
This is a development consisting of a small unit and a 70m tower reaching 23 stories. It will house 112 residential units and a 173 bed, 4 star hotel which will likely be occupied by Ramada.

The official site is http://www.thequarterliverpool.com/

This is the development as of April 2008:

Picture by Doug Roberts from SkyscraperCity.

New world square
This is a £130 million development near the pier head it is set to start in September. It will consist of 362 apartments, a spa, a restaurant, office space and a possible 5 star hotel.

The proposed design:

Stanley Dock Tobacco warehouse
This has been a problematic building firstly it is a protected building which limits what can be done to it. Secondly it is huge, either this building or Battersea power station in London is considered to be the largest brick building in the world. A controversial proposal has been accepted for 900 apartments which will involve carving out the centre of the building. The centre must be carved out as no light would reach the middle otherwise. If this development still goes ahead it is likely to be a 2009 start.

A render of the proposed development:

St Johns precinct re-development
This is a large shopping centre in the heart of the city centre. It is not very old but it has not aged well and many people dislike the building in its current form. Beginning in 2009 the building will see an almost complete rebuild to bring it into the 21st century and allow it to compete with more attractive areas of the city centre in particular Liverpool 1.

The official site is http://www.everydayforeverybody.com/st-johns.htm

This is a render of the proposed design:

King Edward tower
This proposed residential tower is 53 stories it is so very close to being built but we are still waiting to here if it gets accepted or not. The tower will be the tallest building in the north of England so as you can imagine everyone who has an opinion is getting a chance to voice it, and criticism is coming from every angle. This is likely the reason why the decision is taking so long but we wait in hope.

This is a render of the proposed tower:

Shanghai tower
This tower is still in the very early stages but it is a proposed 60 story building which will be taller than king Edward tower. It will provide office space, a 5 star hotel, a bar, a restaurant and leisure facilities. The plans have been announced but no renders are yet available, the company behind this are currently searching for Chinese investment to put towards the construction.

This building will mark the first development in the Liverpool waters scheme.

Liverpool waters
This is a huge development which will take place over 30 years to regenerate the disused docks to the north of the city. It will consist of 5.5 billion pounds worth of investment to build towers along the waterfront. It will be mixed use creating 20,000 full time jobs and homes for 50,000 people. Whether this all comes off is yet to be seen but even if only a small number of these towers get built it will still be great news.

The official site is http://www.peelwaters.co.uk/LpoolWaters.html

A couple of renders:

Central village
This scheme will create homes, shops, hotels, bars and restaurants above central station which is part of the underground rail system. It will cost £170 million the key feature being the two towers, one at 20 stories and the other at 25 stories. The towers will consist of 300 flats. It will also revamp central station itself. After delays it should begin on site in the autumn (fall).

The official website is http://centralvillageliverpool.com/

A couple of renders:

Princes dock 3a
This is a proposed tower to be built on plot 3a of Princes dock. The tower will be 36 stories and reach 112m. The tower has been granted permission but there has been no news on this for a while so I don’t know what is happening with it.

Render of the tower:

Sports stadiums
The new Liverpool football club stadium has been accepted and is set to begin on site later in the year. It will be built as a 60,000 seat stadium but can be expanded to 73,000 seats.

The new Everton football club stadium is still under consideration as it is a controversial move. The proposed stadium will have 50,000 seats.

Liverpool 1
Phase 2 of Liverpool 1 is still yet to open, it will be complete at the end of September and will open up the final two thirds of the development which includes shops, a cinema and a park.

Liverpool 1 phase 1 opened in April providing huge areas of retail space which the city was in great need of.

Photo of Liverpool 1 from the Hilton hotel which is still under construction itself:

Picture by Pete Carr from www.PeteCarr.net

The port
Finally £100m investment will be put into a post-Panamax river container terminal to increase the ports capacity to nearly 1.5m teus. This will begin construction at the start of 2009. There will also be 90,000 sq ft cool store constructed with the capacity for 5,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables.
