Not a movie, but I was surprised to see Ottawa featured in the recent BBC "Human Planet" doc series. Ottawa is shown in the "Rivers" episode where they show how City of Ottawa workers use TNT to break up the ice on the Rideau River in order to avoid flooding. The approximately 5 minute segment shows quite a few shots of the city and many landmarks, including some sweet aerials. I wasn't expecting to see my hometown among such exotic locales as Tibet and Brazil!

Narrated by John Hurt! Coool : )

A Movie crew was at the Stella Luna in Hintonburg yesterday filming a Christmas movie. I've heard that it will be a Hallmark film. The sign that was posted said "Tech Land", but I'm not sure if that's the title of the film or not...

Some trailers were also spotted at Tom Brown Arena.

Apparently, another crew was in Hintonburg (on Breezehill) back in April...

Said in that movie trailer guy voice: “In a world where a lot of movie trailers were at Elmwood school...”

As soon as I saw the pictures, I knew it was a Halmark movie. Career women visiting a touristy traditional main street meets the perfect manly man who works with his hands (trades) or other physical work (firefighter). Miss-understanding results in conflict. Everything is explained. Happily ever after. I can't stand watching the same movie over and over again!! Make it stop!!

Not a movie, but Guy Fieri from Flavortown and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives is in Ottawa. He was spotted at Occo Kitchen at Bay and Albert yesterday and was with Jim Watson at Meat Press in Hintonburg today.

The Google Map of filming locations is pretty cool: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer...572913989&z=15

TIL "Fatman" was shot in the Pakenham & Almonte areas...

Fatman was also shot at Patterson Creek near the Rideau Canal last winter.

And in Cantley in the vicinity of Route 307 and Chemin Denis.

This movie actually looks pretty good. During filming, Mel was staying in one of the infill houses at Fisher and Carling right near the farm. He kept a pretty low profile while in town.

I think there is a scene featuring the bridge in Pakenham as well.

I had a good laugh when I saw the trailer at the absurdity of it all. Now that I know I might see some local sights, maybe I'll pay the $6 to watch it on YouTube this weekend.

From one of CTV's corny Christmas movies. What if Ottawa didn't have height restrictions?

It looks like the Lebreton development finally went ahead with a Freedom Tower replica. Of course everyone could get behind that.

I don't think it's going to fool anybody to think that this is New York, but good effort.

I did end up watching Fatman on the weekend... definitely not the best movie but filled with some local sights:
  • There was one "city" scene that looked to be on the storefront side of Sussex, opposite the US embassy
  • Lots of highway driving scenes clearly filmed on the 417 in Kanata. One scene focused on the sign for the Terry Fox Dr. exit.
  • The "downtown" of the town closest to the North Pole was actually Almonte. The old post office building in Almonte had a prominent role as a USPS post office.
  • The 5-arch stone bridge in Pakenham was supposedly in that town as well.
  • The bad guy also made a stop at Critter Jungle in the Hampton Park Plaza
