The University of Ottawa is proposing to develop a five-storey (25 metres in height), Health Sciences Building on the site at 200 Lees Avenue. The proposed development has a gross floor area (GFA) of approximately 22,158 m2.
The proposed development would consist of the following:
• First storey – general teaching and instructional spaces, three speciality laboratories, a library and a large social gathering area which will link the academic spaces to a river terrace with a view to the Rideau River
• Second to the fifth storeys – laboratories and offices for faculty and students
A loading bay and two (2) loading spaces are proposed at the northeast corner of the building to accommodate deliveries. Currently, the site has vehicular access from Lees Avenue and this access will be maintained as part of the proposed development.
A total of 148 vehicular parking spaces are proposed, 137 of which currently exist.
I think the height is appropriate for the setting so close to the river. Nice to have some intensification at Lees regardless. Given the number of students that will use this facility, it will definitely push a ton of transit use and will be convenient for the learners.....more convenient than the medical school at the General Campus which has always been a bit of a transit after-thought.
Not too sure about the barcode/QRcode look. I guess it's interesting??

Can one identify a barcode building by scanning it?
The transit deficiencies to the General/Guindon Campus will become even more apparent when The Advanced Medical Research Centre, employing hundreds more people, is built there.
Maybe it's supposed to resemble some sort of DNA sequencing?
I like the old version better, but this one is still decent. The height seems appropriate along the Rideau, but it's too bad it doesn't get a bit taller closed to Lees & the Hwy.
Construction is well underway! They're already working on the walls of the first level. its crazy how fast it goes when you don't have to dig 5 level of underground parking.
Big tall floors, this 5 story building will be as tall as a residential 8 floor building. I'm excited for it to block a lot of the horridness behind it.
Its a shame, they seem to have stalled out sometime around the carpenter strike. This lovely plywood window frame has been in place for over a month with no visible work being done elsewhere.
