CBC Documentary - The Condo Game

Saw this documentary on CBC, its a couple of years old but very insightful

https://www.cbc.ca/doczone/episodes/the-condo-game

Given the flurry of new condo projects in Ottawa, I think its worth a watch

Well, this list is pretty long considering this list is all for units with 5km of downtown:
http://www.ottawacondonetwork.com/development/
and considering there are twice as many units that have closed in past 3-5 years... so yeah quite the flurry

Most of the projects on that list/website are completed

i.e:
-Tribeca
-Central
-Lansdowne
-Upper West
-Gotham
etc..

And a few are cancelled or pie in the sky..
-55-story Richcraft @ Dows Lake
-Azure
etc..

Azure is getting built, just not the same project. We could add Moon and Royale to that list. The Charlotte. Maybe the Trinity projects, but those might fall in "pie-in-the-sky".

At the moment though, developers seem to be building rentals mostly, which is sorely needed.

I happened to just watch that doc a couple of nights ago as well! Really interesting. And although it's focus is on Toronto, it absolutely applies to Ottawa because it's all about provincial regulation. The biggest take-away was that we need to ban condo developers from donating to political parties, STAT. The Condo Act will not be amended significantly until that happens.

The documentary is from 2013. Corporate/union donations were banned in Ontario at the provincial and municipal level through legislation passed in 2016.

I thought this was a great article recently:

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opin...in-the-zoning/

I never realized that developers make $2-3 million per floor. That’s nuts. It’s getting clear that so much of the shoddy quality and poorly designed anti-urban condos are a result of simply letting developer greed go unchecked.

What they didn't talk about was Tarion's role in condo developments
