Construction rods spill from crane in downtown Portland; no one injured
Posted Jun 11, 2:54 PM
By Elliot Njus | The Oregonian/OregonLive

A load of construction rods spilled Tuesday morning from a crane being used to build an apartment building in downtown Portland, crushing a section of the fence surrounding the site.

No one was injured and there was no further damage, said Brian Knudsen, the Oregon vice president for general contractor Andersen Construction.

The spill occurred shortly before noon at 140 S.W. Columbia St., where Andersen is building a 20-story apartment tower.

The crane was lifting a bundle of yellow rods used in forming concrete structures. Knudsen said a metal band holding the components together failed while the bundle was a few feet above the truck.

Looks okay so far, I hate that the lower portion is a parking garage.

The garage is nicely disguised though. It also creates a higher tower with better views for residents . . .

We need to remember that this site was a challenge to develop because of the 1980's bunker-like entrance for the underground garage at the Koin Tower across SW 2nd Avenue. That gobbled up much of the ground floor on the south side of the new building. It must have been really difficult to make underground parking work with that big obstacle in place.

That is true, I forgot about that garage entrance being on that site.

Hey High Voltage. I use to deliver windows/doors to projects like this. What brand window & doors are being used? Has this project topped off yet.

Honestly I couldn't tell ya, I'm an electrician and was left in the basement where they keep me. Building topped out weeks ago, here is a webcam:

Something makes me feel like that website wasn't made by a local. It lists "nearby" restaurants such as Irving Street Kitchen which aren't exactly close, and in that particular case have closed permanently.

Snark aside, I think the building turned out pretty well. They did a really good job of incorporating the KOIN Tower parking entrance. Post-pandemic I hope that this building can draw more people to a corner of downtown that can be pretty dead, especially in the evenings.

Live. Dine. Dream.
Huge. Eye. Roll.

I like the building though, and I'm so glad to see this part of downtown come alive.
