Demolition man... man oh man (Hamilton Specialty Bar)

Buildings at the old Hamilton Specialty Bar plant (at 319 Sherman Ave. N, between Sherman and Birch north of the CN tracks) are being taken down.

This is the death throe of one of the structures on the Birch side of the property, on Sep 30:

How was this allowed? Who does a demo of an ancient industrial building like this without taking proper precautions?

If we had a Hamilton sub-forum called "WTF" this post would go there.

Has anyone heard of any plans for the site? I get that for anything apart from industrial it would need very expensive remediation, but it is right across the street from the Cotton Factory.

No info on how much the fines could be if the charges stick. But it's nice to see an organization being held accountable.

The first court date is scheduled for Mar 24.

Delsan-AIM charged over demolition dust plume that shrouded Sherman Avenue North neighbourhood
https://www.thespec.com/news/hamilto...hbourhood.html

Quote:
Delsan-AIM Environmental Services Inc. now faces three charges under the provincial Environmental Protection Act related to the demolition of a 120-foot-high melt shop at the former Hamilton Specialty Bar Sept. 30, 2019.

The company is alleged to have discharged a contaminant to the environment “likely to cause an adverse effect” and allowed the pollution plume to spread beyond the Sherman Avenue property. A third charge alleges improper notification of the ministry.
Quote:
Hamilton’s public health department told residents that dust samples collected in the area showed only “trace” amounts of dangerous carcinogens and that breathing in the pollution was “unlikely” to cause long-term health problems.

Rodgers said he remains skeptical. “Who knows how much of that stuff I breathed in?” he said.
