Molson you cant compare Atlantic City to London. This is substantially smaller casino. There are casinos all over the province. I think there are like 10-15 casinos in a 2-3 hour drive? about 7 of them substantially bigger then ours will be and almost all of them are currently bigger then the slots at western fair. Any town outside the city can take this casino and probably will if we don't except it. The effects in the community will be the same and we wont get any benefits in any way from it. Might as well keep the money in the city and attract some outsiders.

We have Detroit with multiple large casino's. Niagara Falls, Windsor, Brantford and Sarnia. Woodbine. There're building another in Toronto. Anyone addicted in London can easily gamble outside the city in any of these cities or the internet. We can't forget the internet is front of us all for gambling.

So why are you in favor of it? Because addicts will get their fix someplace else?
Still trying to see the net benefits. It will not revitalize the neighborhood. People will drive there (of course), park and go inside. They will not linger in the neighborhood.

These arguments remind me of those billionaire sports team owners who cajole taxpayers to shell out for their palaces, with the disingenuous contention that the stadium will revitalize the area (if anything, the reverse is true).

I see your points. I guess 2 different believes. I know people that work at the current casino and others. It provides jobs and place for people to go ( hopefully for fun not for continuous addictive purposes). I like to play some blackjack and roulette but I also know when to stop.

Also doesn't some of the money profited from the city and gateway go to addictive services? If so wouldn't it be better for us to take that money rather then outside communities?

Wondering your opinion if you think just the slots as is are better or worse than a full casino with tables?

Has anyone been into the slots? It is a bunch of old people hanging around gambling their lives away, not terribly fun to watch. On the flip side a full casino if done properly I can see attracting a different crowd of people who are not simply "addicts".

Simpson: Don’t bet on new casino’s benefits
http://lfpress.com/opinion/columnist...sinos-benefits

I'd say that this is a little too much doom and gloom. Many people go to other casinos nearby for table games or play online. Yes I do agree that there will be a larger impact, but it won't be as severe as people think.

I went to the slots for the first time in forever last week. They are installing semi-live table games in the spot where high limit slots used to be. Like automatic roulette wheel and video blackjack. Guess that's as far as Gateway can currently go without real table games.

I went to blow some some free play they offered me and the place was full - mostly oldies - they are now holding draws where you MUST be present to win, so the place is nuts. Keeping everyone there for the draws must make them a ton of money.

So the casino is looking at options on Wonderland south of Southdale if they can't get a deal done with the Western Fair. Honestly, I don't see why they even entertain the fair anymore. Gateway is nearing a year and half, and the fair is still dragging this out? Time to show the fair they don't run this show, they should have latched on when they had the chance.

I think parking that thing right at the corner of Exeter and Wonderland, right off the highways, is perfect. From the social aspects that opposition feels about the casino being at the fair, it's going to be a lot less convenient for the "people who shouldn't be gambling" to get there. It will be a lot easier for out of towners to get to it. And that's what we want, is out of town money coming there.

Apparently historian reports that the Queens Park site at the Western Fair may have unmarked graves based on old map documents. This further complicates any development plans as the construction costs and delays would rise if human remains were found during excavations.

Together with the District waffling on negotiations I can see the focus move to the alternative sites on Wonderland south grow alot stronger now.

Gateway has signed a lease with Spivak to build the new casino on their property on Wonderland, basically across from the new Lowes. Presumably pending zoning. Will be a great improvement to that stretch of Wonderland if it goes ahead.

Improvement? Not without significant improvements to the area. Gateway is trying to market itself more to regional customers - which is why they are closer to 401/402.

With all the big box barf already there + upcoming & this casino, Wonderland might need 6 lanes between Southdale and Exeter sooner than later.

When I think of area casinos, none of them are really in this kind of area. Windsor & Point Edward (Sarnia) along a river front, Brantford is beside downtown (kinda like the Western Fair), and Niagara Falls is in the touristy area.

I'm skeptical how integrated it will be with the growing city around it, but we will see (if it actually gets built there).

Big loss to the Western Fair if this happens - that place will be a ghost town if it closes. Horse racing clientele will likely dwindle as well.

Interesting nonetheless! I thought their location would be much closer to 401/402 corridors.

It's a big improvement over a cement plant. I did kind of think they would go with their other idea of the triangle at the southwest corner of Wonderland and Exeter though.

Huge blow for Western Fair District and the City and that part of EOA. Negotiations must be really bad if they still couldn't make a deal. On the other hand Gateway still needs the City to change the zoning on the Wonderland location for that site to go ahead. This may be a ploy to put pressure on WFD and City to rethink their position.

If there's too much red tape, they might pull out of the city all-together. They might build just outside of the city limits or in a nearby community, or by a 401 interchange.

That's what I was thinking.. They picked a site in the middle of a retail corridor on land that isn't zoned for the purpose? I think they just issued a PR statement to get the WFD to smarten up.

Not sure how I feel about this, I personally was all for the full casino/hotel/etc at the Western Fair. I have always said in the past the gambling additiction side of things I feel are overblown by people opposed to the development, having a full casino would actually bring people to London for a weekend away if done properly in addition to Londoners of course. Me not being a gambler (aside from the weekend in Vegas or Niagara every few years) I am sure would make a point to spend a night out there once or twice a year.
I think this potential new spot is a bit strange and as others have mentioned wonder if this is also being done to try and strong arm the city/Western Fair to allow them to move forward. I am sure the "signed lease" as they call it is contingent on a number of things so this is not a real thing at this point.

Would kind of suck to be that car lot that was told to move by their landlord, the Spivaks, based on a ploy. And it would suck to be the Spivaks losing a tenant based on a ploy.

Western Fair District shit the bed hard on their negotiations with Gateway. They thought they could play hardball and get everything they wanted regarding leasing/selling the lands, AND get Gateway to subsidize the money losing harness racing. What world were they on?

Now they'll lose their largest attraction and cash cow and having nothing to replace it. It's funny seeing Western Fair's GM already getting ready on the media to beg the provincial government for a bailout for their idiotic bargaining. I hope the province tells them to pound dirt, let them sleep in bed they've made for themselves!

I agree but I bet the landlord can easily sell that land for another development if the casino fails to go forward on Wonderland - its a prime spot, and suited better to things other than a cement factory. Maybe the car lot is on the way out in ether case.

Reminds me of the Woodbine Casino in Etobicoke, I feel like it doesn't really matter where you put it, people are going to find it and gamble.

Well, that seems less than impressive. Wonder why they planned a hotel at the fairgrounds but not here? Funny, as I was quickly scanning through the pages of text and it says something about complementing and integrating with the area, I was thinking "sounds like it will look like Lowes across the road". Then I get to the diagrams, and yep, looks like Lowe's across the road lol. I know they are basic drawings, but why not put out something that shows what they are looking at actually building? They had all these glossy full colour images done up for the WFD site. I was also hoping there would be some kind of entertainment component to this, although obviously nothing like Windsor or Rama.
