East downtown residents are getting word they could one day have a record-breaking neighbour.

Alldritt Land Corp. is pitching an 80-storey mixed residential tower that could end up as much as 29 metres taller than the Ice District’s 251-metre Stantec tower, still under construction, but billed as the tallest tower in Western Canada.

Public open house notices went out this week and quickly spread on social media.

“Whatever they are smoking, I want some,” said one commenter on the Riverdale Facebook group.

The Alldritt Tower is planned for contaminated land just up the hill from Louise McKinney Park and includes a public park connection between the Shaw Conference Centre and the river valley.

The design is still in flux, but recent versions call for transparent first and second floors to preserve views of the river valley. It could include a hotel, and will be a mix of different uses. Eighty storeys would allow a maximum of 550 units.

Seems a tad bit ambitious for the neighbourhood since there is nothing over 14 storeys in the area. I would love to see something like this closer to the core.

It's a block east of Shaw Conference Centre and Canada Place. That's as close to being in the core as you can get. And don't forget Five Corners is a block east and those sites are all zoned up for 45-50 floors... So I say, this makes total sense...

It's also nice to see that Edmonton is finally embracing high-density urbanism in a way that was almost unthinkable only a few years ago...

What happens when you close a downtown Airport restricting height. I see Edmonton with multiple 200 meter plus towers and condo towers in the next decade or 2. Once a few are up other developers have to keep up with the Joneses win win for Edmonton.

Depends on which real estate bubble bursts first? Toronto or Edmonton... And let's not even mention Vancouver. Otherwise, it's about a 50/50 shot at this point...

Meh. Never say never. I never thought Rogers Place would get built never mind the City of Edmonton, JW Marriott or the Stantec Towers and we know how that's turning out...

Do I think it's likely at that size and in these uncertain economic times? No but stranger things have happened... Hope we do see it though... Given the site and potential views I hope we do...

Mookey780: 3-4 years ago it was almost a pipe dream to see a 600 footer in Edmonton! Now there's going to be 3 and one of those is 823'!! Not saying it'll get built as is, or ever get built at all.... Just saying!

I'd give it a slightly better chance than The Edmontonian ever had, but not much more than that.

I think since the airport moved out of central Edmonton the ambition to build tall buildings has exceeded the economic reality of doing so. If Calgary hasn't built a supertall yet I can't see Edmonton doing it anytime soon. The way the economy is right now even less so.

We now have some images of the proposed Alldritt Tower for Edmonton!

This is the base of the tower, keep in mind that those buildings behind the tower do not exist.

This is what the tower might look like in the skyline.

That's a pretty wild design! That would be an "eye popper" even in Calgary!

That looks like pie in the sky everything and the kitchen sink design. This doesn't look real to me.

I think I'd be ok without the tower and keeping the idea of a stepped retail/common area with access to LMP
That tower hurts my brain
