Is part of Niagara technically an island?

Always thought this but it's probably something not too many people have wondered.

Would the Welland Canal and Niagara River make the eastern part of Niagara an island. I get one end is the canal and the others a gorge..just always wondered if there was a possibility

From Wikipedia, which certainly isn't the definitive word but this does sound reasonable:

"Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, more or less the entirety of Fennoscandia by the White Sea Canal, or Marble Hill in northern Manhattan during the time between the building of the United States Ship Canal and the filling-in of the Harlem River which surrounded the area, it is generally not considered an island."

If canals make islands than Lowertown, the Byward Market, Ottawa University, Old Ottawa East, Old Ottawa South and Carleton University in Ottawa are on an island too...but I have never heard it referred to as such.

In the (South) centre of the region is Welland. The East side of the city of Welland could be considered a Peninsula within a Peninsula
