Need help on selecting a home design software

I plan on building a contemporary modern minimalist type glass home. Once I sell my town home I will build this home after purchasing the land. While I save I was wondering what kind of program would you recommend for both designing and using as a journal for material research. I will be working on the design of this project for a while. Any suggestions would be helpful thanks.
