Yea, around Denlou in the southwest, then from Lively (where the 4 lanes revert to 2) to Markstay (new alignment from the current northeast end of the bypass to Markstay)

By adding a few km here and there on both ends of the 17/417 between Sudbury and Ottawa, we will eventually have a fully twinned highway in a century or so I am kinda hoping for that big announcement, where they would finally decide to twin a substantial stretch (100+ km) instead of 10-20 km at a time. I am actually surprised they are proposing 50 km this time.

Oh oops I mean, it’s been planned out, but we aren’t doing it any time soon.
At least wait till 400 to be pushed north for that one.

In his dreams, it is all done.

It is at least 1500km just to get from the MB border to Sudbury. It is pushing close to 2000km to get it to Ottawa. It is also another almost 1000km to 4 lane highway 11, which is also the Trans Canada. So, that is in the neighbourhood of 3000km. So, thousands, not hundreds.
I think they will do Sudbury to Sault Ste. Marie eventually - as divided, not Interstate standard. That was promised when I was a kid, nearly 50 years ago, so it doesn't seem entirely insane to imagine that it could occur in the next 25.

Ok my bad, for a second thought I’d missed an announcement about this. And yes, I fully expect the 400 extension to get done first.

(3) 11 all the way, no 17;
(4) both 11 and 17
(1)’s the most likely, followed by (1A), though if I’m to unpack it, twinning a little bit of 17 is much more likely. (2) is based on (1A) being 17 not 11.

Next time you ask me, I should just copy and paste this.

There’s a reason why nothing’s planned for 11 beyond North Bay but 54 km for 17 around Sudbury.
I am thinking it will be much the same as building the original highways.

They do about 20km every 5 years. If we agree that they won't do anything on 17 till the 400 is finished to Sudbury. then that is at least 20 years from now before they start. Lets round the total distance not done on 17 to 2000km. Then, at 20km every 5 years, that would be....500 years.......(can someone check my math as that seems rather low.)

I fully expect within about 50 years SSM east to be all 4 lanes or more. It is where most of the population and most of the AADT is.

I think that between Deep River-Petawawa and Mattawa is a longshot for getting twinned even in that timeframe, but definitely SSM to Mattawa is likely to get done, as will Arnprior to a good distance beyond Pembroke. Maybe Rolphton?

I can agree with that. Now, if the province was smart (which we know they aren't) They would start at SSM, Sudbury, North Bay and Arnprior and on each add 20km at a time simultaneously. That would mean about 6 projects are done at the same time, or around 120km get done at a time.

I still feel all talk no action.
Also, $100M for 6 km? That's $16.7M/km, nearly double the cost of the current twinning work west of Nipigon. What's so expensive? Blasting a harder type of rock, or remote location?

I can see the divided 4 lanes being extended for Hwy 17 in the next 20 years from Whitefish to the intersection with Hwy 6 which goes to Espanola and Manitoulin Island. I believe that was the original plan when the 4 lanes were built to Whitefish but funding never came through to go that far.

Most of the sections west of the AB border are like that, but this section is particularly bad.

When you are driving behind a heavily loaded semi in either direction, yeah, walking is almost as fast.
