China develops unique heat-resistant hypersonic aircraft

- Chinese scientists have developed a new heat-resistant material for hypersonic aircraft which can endure over 3,000 C from friction caused by a Mach 5-20 flight within the atmosphere. The lead scientist on the project said the material outperforms all similar foreign-made ones with its high melting point, low density and high malleability. --- Unlike foreign technologies that use traditional refractory metals and carbon-carbon materials, the China-made new material is a composite of ceramics and refractory metals, Fan Jinglian, the lead scientist who developed the material and a professor at Central South University in Central China’s Hunan Province, told the Global Times.

Citroen's tiny EV concept is an alternative to bikes and scooters

- Many automakers are designing vehicles for an era beyond car ownership, but Citroen is taking things one step further: it's envisioning a car that you'd use in place of bikes and scooters. Its newly introduced Ami One Concept is a compact (8.2ft long), all-electric "urban mobility object" that you'd use for short hops around downtown areas. The two-seater would have just a 62-mile range and a 28MPH top speed, but it would be easy to access and drive with a QR code on the handle replacing a key. You wouldn't even need a driver's license in some countries, Citroen said.

- Ready or not, here comes a new flying car design: the Aska, a dual-purpose vehicle designed both to drive on roads and to fly through the air so you can loft yourself over the gridlock. After working on the design for two years, startup NFT will unveil a model of the Aska at an Israeli conference on Monday. We're revealing the design exclusively here, along with the company's plan to test-fly it in the first quarter of 2020 and to start selling it in 2025. The newly named Aska, Japanese for flying bird will be the size of a large SUV when on the road and will fit three passengers.

- NFT believes the Aska's aircraft-car combination will succeed through door-to-door convenience. If you have to take an Uber car to a launch pad, hail a flying taxi, then hail another Uber at the other end of the flight, you'll spend so much time waiting for connections that you might as well have just driven a boring old car stuck on the ground. --- "You're solving the problem of traffic, the problem of wasting time," said Maki Kaplinksy, who co-founded the company with her husband, NFT Chairman Guy Kaplinsky. "We have the most efficient and most comfortable way of commuting for the future."

Assuming it's a small child miraculously floating ~6' above the ground...

Though, this is still an unworkable idea. Look at that freaking wingspan... if we're talking about taking flight as a conventional plane would we're talking about some pretty dramatic damage to a suburban neighborhood. If this thing is capable of vertical lift-off, we're still looking at some pretty serious damage from the forced air.

As it is, the Baltimore subway might be the most tragically underused transit asset, relative to its capacity, in the United States. (Philadelphia's Broad Street Subway, with four tracks for most of its length, but only 111,575 average daily riders per the most recently released reports, and through-running regional rail tunnel used for barely more than low-frequency commuter service give it a depressing run for its money)

Its electrocuted remains were found lodged inside equipment next to the tracks, Japan Railways says. — The incident in Japan has echoes of a shutdown caused by a weasel at Europe's Large Hadron Collider in 2016. When the weasel took a fatal chew on wiring inside a high-voltage transformer, it caused a short circuit which temporarily stopped the work of the particle accelerator.
