Canadian Waterfalls Thread

Canada is known for its natural beauty. Vast forests, mountains and hills, lakes, rivers and, waterfalls.

Waterfalls can be found in the middle of the wilderness or in the centre of a city. Some have been left in their natural state while others have been tapped to harness energy.

Here are a few of Ottawa's urban waterfalls:

Rideau Falls around Green Island. There are two set of falls on each side of the Island, though the east falls are better known and more accessible.

Dams were built in the 1800s to manage water levels.

Downtown, at the Zibi site between Ottawa and Hull, are the Chaudère Falls. The area has a long history, from their importance to the First Nations, to the forestry industry's take-over, they've become publicly accessible for the first time in 200 years during Canada's 150.

Hydroelectricity has been produced at the Chaudère Falls since 1891. Hydro Ottawa owns the entire operation, including the Québec side, and continues to invest to improve the site, both for power and for the public.

In Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Takakkaw Falls is the second tallest waterfall in Canada with a total height of 373m. Best viewed from the Iceline Trail in my opinion, but you have to climb around 700m to get this kind of view.

I've hiked to Della Falls (Vancouver Island), one of the tallest in Canada

Less known, but even taller, is James Bruce Waterfall (Princess Louisa Marine Provincial Park, BC), the highest in North America, and 9th in the world.

Did a hike to Troll Falls in Kananaskis last summer, gorgeous little waterfall, there are about 5 more above it as you climb up.

Hamilton has many waterfalls, given its location along the Niagara Escarpment and the number of creeks and springs in the area's watershed.

There are more than 130 documented on the City of Waterfalls website, some of which are large and some seasonal or that only flow during rainfall. If you're ever in the city and have time for a hike, it's well worth it to walk the Bruce Trail or conservation area trails to see some of these up close. Waterfall enthusiasts often light up some of their favourites at night.

My favourite local falls are Dickson Falls in Fundy National Park. I always do the trail there every time I visit the park.

Arguably BC's most famous, Helmcken Falls is huge. The concentration of water passing through its narrow walls is intense. An extremely loud and powerful surge.

Saskatchewan's largest waterfall,
Hunt Falls at 60 meters wide and 30 meters tall.

Not really a great abundance of waterfalls in Manitoba, but perhaps the best known is Pisew Falls near Thompson, in Northern Manitoba:
