Here's a rendering of what'll replace the lamppost across from the Lister Block:

Has anyone heard what's going in on the first floor of this building? Looks to be a restaurant or something.

Also surprised the city hasn't been able to rent out the Wendel Clark corner. The city has got to be the worst commercial landlord in the city after Darko...

It was suppose to be a smoke house place called Steeltown Smoke something or other, same people as Hogtown in Toronto.

Thanks for sharing. Weird feelings about the final product. It would be a welcome addition almost anywhere in Hamilton but it's by far the worst architecture on King William.

THANK you - for a strip where every building has character this doesn't feel like an appropriate design.

I think that was supposed to be the Wendel Clarks unit, according to news coverage of that. I reached out and asked them if they still plan to locate in Hamilton as it seems they've set up shop in Selkirk instead.

Edit: nevermind scratch that. Messaged Steeltown Smokers, but it was in fact Hogtown Smoke, who decided to name their Hamilton location "Steeltown Smoke" which isn't at all confusing....

Waiting on a response from Hogtown Smoke. Made me also wonder about the Well Hamilton, which the insta account for has all but died, but the Toronto location looks to be posting regularly. Still awaiting a response from them.

they should have either recreated the lister facade and pulled it east, or knocked the addition wall back a metre from the lister streetwall and done a nice transparent glass facade to let the lister stand on its own. This looks junky and complicated, with cheap materials and poor detailing. Brutal considering this is city offices.

At the very least, they should have at least gone the full way in duplicating the beige centre rectangle/lintel part, with actual detailed stonework. Instead it just draws attention to the fact that it's a copy, but a cheap copy.

I've confirmed with Hogtown Smoke they will not be opening in this building or the actual Lister Building,. It instead in Stoney Creek..

Had the Balfour Building remained standing on that site it would probably have been renovated by now, and we'd all be much happier.

I don't mind the fact it doesn't compete with everything else on the street. But much like the backside of the Right House it could be a lot better.

Well when it comes to building quality at least we agree - this feels like a poor imitation

Exactly this - shoulda gone with white terra cotta. The rest coulda still been bland but at least if the entranceway was detailed it woulda been a nice homage.

Well, I don't hate it. Needs some signage, though.

Looks like something is going in on the first floor, so signage should be imminent. Not sure what it is though. I keep looking inside and I don't see much work going on, unsure if it's because the stay at home order stopped this type of work.

I like it.

And I absolutely love King William now. It's probably the best 1 block stretch in Hamilton. And when the Cobalt is done - it'll be the best 2 block stretch.

It definitely is my favourite street downtown, even if it's just the north side for now. I bet nobody even remembers who King William was

That grey panelling looks a lot better in person. There's a texture to it that doesn't show up well in photos.
