I remember the first time I saw Hamilton. It was from that bridge cutting across the lake on my way to Buffalo. My first thought was "Did I take a wrong turn and end up in Iraq?"

Growing up out west you sure don't see places like that...

Fine thread, flar.

I love this shot. Odd view with the train under the bridge.

@boisecynic, the dude, and SouthJersey7:
I wonder what proportion of social assistance ends up in the hands of satellite companies?

Dumpy, yes, however this is just one aspect of the city.
The view of the steel mills from the Skyway Bridge is certainly not flattering either.
But check out where some of the people who built the factories lived:

Pretty funny how completely different West and East Hamilton is.....

West Hamilton

East Hamilton

A complete polar opposite yet the distance between the two side isn't that far apart.

An amazing thread. Very sad. Is there any hope for revitalization?

I swear I've seen the same exact views in Buffalo and Erie. There's a sad beauty in all this decay. Great photos! Something about Great Lakes industrial cities...

Some of the old industrial buildings will find new uses, some are being fixed up for studios and lofts. A lot of the houses in these pictures are totally surrounded by heavy industry, so there's little hope for them until those industries are removed and the entire area cleaned up (unlikely).

Industry will probably EVENTUALLY go away... eventually... if this area isn't razed by then, there will be some incredibly cheap real estate waiting to be occupied.

I'm glad you posted those though, so many pics in this forum show the pretty stuff. Poverty and decay seem to be taboo on SSP, indeed, this "looking the other way" and "wearing blinders" mentality is one of the reasons for that neighborhood getting to that state of decay.
That's what I thought.

I like pic #9, the one of the garbage strewn alley, yet I counted 9 satellite tv dishes on the roofs. People really have their priorities straight.
They don't just have satellite TV... most of those are HDTV dishs. Of course, that doesn't prove that they have HDTV... but they might.

OMG, one of the best thread I've seen on SSP.
All along viewing, I was waiting for the next picture, next...

WOW, intense and many other comments above... so right.

Yes I am surprised of the content, canadian content... what a thread again.

I can't believe anyone would be suprised by seeing industrial grit in Canada. It's an industrialized country just like the USA with cities, farms, and factories... Why is this suprising?

Me personally what I was surprised and I live in Hamilton is how that alley could be so dirty. The city has some pretty tight rules on keeping allies clean and garbage free. Guess nobody in the area has called the city to get it cleaned up. Guess the neighbourhood doesn't mind it.

If you've ever been to a Canadian city, you would notice how immaculately clean they are.

Hamilton is probably the dirtiest of all cities in this country (sorry, you know I love you, H-town), and yet it's still insanely clean compared to cities like Buffalo, Detroit or Cleveland (all of which I have spent time in).

So come take a trip up here... spend some tourist dollars... and see how gorgeous our cities (including Hamilton) really are!!!
