I was just gonna ask... are there going to be any balconies at all on the north side or will all those gaps be filled in with glass? I seem to remember they will be...

The renderings of the back of 111 W 57th shows that the building would have the gap filled in. It doesn’t say that the balconies will be used for entertainment purposes or something like that.

^ Each window panel on the north façade is to be slightly inset from its neighbor, creating a glorious curvature. You can see the effect just above the Essex sign.

I think the windows will be flush from top to bottom, with the tops of the windows on each floor slightly curved a couple inches as part of the design

This pic from bpc @ NYY should show it a bit better

From that picture I’d say Skyguy’s description is more accurate. But it is a rather subtle effect.
