What time is sunset and sunrise there in early July? Sunset here is just after 8:30, and dusk is about 9:15. Sunrise is before 5:45, and it starts getting light around 5:15.

What's Iceberg beer? Is that your version of Labatt or Molson or Alexander Keith?

Beer culture here is kind of primitive. Don't get me wrong, we have a handful of great craft beers - Port Rexton Porter, Storm Coffee Porter, etc. - but the market is still dominated by macros.

Quidi Vidi Brewing makes Iceberg beer. It's just a very light beer, similar to say a Coors Light, but all of the water used is harvested from icebergs. It's a marketing gimmick here. You can get vodka, gin, rum, and all the rest under the Iceberg name as well. It really is excellent water, and if we were in some other part of the world or especially polluted it would actually make a profound difference. But our existing water sources are already perfect for brewing.

Molson and Labatts both brew their own local brands here. I'm sure the recipes are the same as everywhere else, but we quite passionately support anything local so smart companies tend to maintain our brands. For example, Loblaw's everywhere else is still called Dominion here, and the logo is a Loblaw's L turned to resemble a D. And we're one of the only places in the world where Pepsi is more popular than Coke because Coke closed down a factory here. There are still lots of businesses that won't even serve it, decades later.

Anyhow, back to the beer. Molson and Labatt local beers are India Beer, Jockey Club, Dominion Ale, Blue Star, and Blackhorse. They're all more popular than they would otherwise be because our laws require beer sold away from groceries (at gas stations, superettes, convenience stores, etc.) must be locally brewed. You have to go to like a Sobey's or a Dominion to get imported beer.

In addition to its natural beauty, St. John's looks like a fun & quirky city. Is most of the nightlife in a centralized district or scattered across the city?

From an Atlantic perspective, our core is very small so the best answer is probably yes it's all in the same district. Your impression would probably be everything except suburban malls and car dealerships is in that one core district.

But within that, there is one particular strip - George Street - that has most of our main bars for young people, old people, live music, karaoke, folk music, dance music, etc.

Catching up. Wrote these posts days ago so forget the date references. Too lazy to change them now... lol

It hit almost 30C (86F) in the city today, which is rare for us. Escaped south to Saint Vincent's where whales play close to the beach. It's always miserable down there - if the wind is from the north or east, it's cold anyway. If it's from the south or west, it carries in the fog that's always offshore where the warm Gulf and cold Labrador currents meet - and that makes it cold.

Head far enough south and you hit what are called hyperoceanic barrens. Almost nothing can grow here because of all the wind, fog, and salt.

I came back up the other side of the Southeast Avalon, along the west coast of St. Mary's Bay. It's one the main geographic dividing lines between Catholic and Protestant on the island. The rivalries remain, attributed to geography, but youth generally have no idea it started with religion.

Not that there's many youth left. A lot of rusted and abandoned playgrounds in the towns along this stretch of coast.

Today's road trip was to Placentia, otherwise known as Plaisance - the former French capital of Newfoundland. I also stopped at nearby Ship Harbour, where Churchill (then our Prime Minister, as we had not yet joined Canada) and Roosevelt signed the Atlantic Charter during WWII.
