That urban freeway looks like a huge undertaking, considering it runs though lots of developed area.... I assume the city is already getting ROW's in place.

Yeah, the Vernon West Bypass is long-term (past the 2031 time horizon) and was incorporated into the city's draft transportation plan of January 28, 2008. Current anticipated costs are ~$600 million and a corridor protection strategy is apparently also being implemented.

Are you refering to a conceptual Coquihalla Phase 4, with a conceptual alignment from Westbank, along the westside of Okanagan Lake meeting up with Hwy 97 in that general area?

If so, that was a concept from the late '80's and I can't see that being built for at least another 50+ years (if ever) and only after the existing Hwy 97 corridor has been upgraded to freeway standard.

Thanks for that Okanagan bypass link, I never knew about that. And, the COMC is desperately needed. Especially if they believe that by 2025 Kelowna will have over 200,000.

97 from the TCH right to the US border has been a bottleneck and substandard road since it was built, why politicians ignored upgrading it for so long is beyond belief.

Remember it's VERY expensive to build highways in BC... and there are competing areas for these expenditures.

The latest highway announcement for Hwy 97 in the Okanagan is twinning of a 7 km section between Summerland and Peachland at a cost of $54 million, which equates to ~$7.7 million/km.

And that's without interchanges or any major bridge structures, just blasting, with a 100 km/hr speed limit.

Compare that to ~$1 million/km in Saskatchewan for twinning.

They will be using a new ~9 km alignment higher up along the mountainside and leave the existing alignment as a local road.

BC MoT actually held public information hearings a couple of months ago on the new alignment.

I understand tha the original opening date was set for July 1... but apparently it may even open up as early as the May 24 long weekend.

IIRC, they won't be able to determine an exact date for another few weeks when they will have a clearer timeline for the opening date.

Madison is going up now. I think they've finished pouring the foundation. InVue on Springfield is on it's second of fifteen floors. The Centuria already has people living in it, and the commercial space is being finished up. Not sure about anything else really.

In two months Kelowna International has already had a volume of over 250,000. 1.5 million for the year is definitely possible.

Passenger volumes continue to set records at Kelowna International Airport.

Interim airport manager Sam Sammadar says more than a quarter-million passengers have flown in and out of Kelowna since January 1, a 10-percent increase over the first two months of last year.

In January, 129,000 passengers were recorded and 127,000 in February.

Sammadar says the terminal often operates at 100 percent and even 110 percent of capacity on its busiest days.

The city-owned airport is now busy expanding the departure and pre-board screening areas, targeting an opening of the enlarged facilities this May.

hmmm it almost seems like those numbers are Low , like by a long shot .
I assumed Kelowna was closer to 130,000 . And Vernon alone is closing in on or at 45,000 . isnt it ?

Really?! Those are high for me. And, Vernon the city is close to 39,000. The whole North Okanagan area (Vernon-Enderby) I believe is around 80-90,000.

So I was downtown today, and I had my camera, but it had low battery. So I snapped as many shots as I could up top the parkade; here are the best of them.

New 6 story office/retail that connects to the parkade on Lawrence.

Lofts Downtown, kind of ugly with the concrete.

Densssssse.

The beauty and the beast.

The boys, and a crane. Not sure what it's for, maybe Skye.

22 and sun sun sun.

Richter has a few new apartments under construction or approved.

So hot.

So very hot. Hopefully there's a few more hi-rises that get built around the Bernard/Gordon intersection.
