Just saw a bunch of heavy hitter-looking guys walking around together, looking at things and talking business in Portage Place... sure seems like something's going down

Especially if there are some "heavy hitters" in attendance, as esquire suggested. They possibly want to pose for some pictures, etc., and it wouldn't do much for investor confidence to see protestors holding "save our food court" signs in the background.

Maybe the formal public announcement will come tomorrow? (just conjecture on my part, of course)

Looks like there were media interviews:
https://globalnews.ca/video/6318529/...g-the-project/
https://globalnews.ca/video/6318492/...portage-place/

Those went up but are now down.

You can kind of make out some renders in the background

Looks like a complete overhaul from the bits you can see. Mid rise ish towers. Potentially street front retail.

Yeah, wow... looks like a total refresh plus some substantial additions.

The renovations are good... personally I think the building aged reasonably well, but commercial real estate tends to prefer the new and flashy. It's tough to sell tenants on something that's looking kind of old and tired. This certainly bodes well.

(Interestingly, if you click on the Global News link, there is a new 6 minute feature on the 50th anniversary of the Richardson Building in the sidebar... looks like enticing viewing for local skyscraper nerds)

Well today was apparently a good day to discover this forum! Very excited to see the actual renders that I assume will be released in the next few days?

If this actually happens that 3 blocks of fresh, flashy new building will be such a boost to the look and feel of downtown!

Pad site foundations were designed for mid-rise office (15ish floors).

Similar to 300 Main, assuming they do some reinforcing of the existing core, they can theoretically go up to 20 to 25 floors in height for residential.

EDIT: the renders have changed a bit from what I saw last year, but the major components (towers, courtyards and skywalk along Portage) are the same.

I do wonder if the courtyards result with unintended consequences...

Just staring at the renderings and a few thoughts come to mind:

-I like the overall look they're changing the place to... very fresh, very of the moment. It will look totally different.

-They're even going to try to chop up the monolith to make it look somewhat like a bunch of different buildings instead of one huge giant.

-Edmonton Court will be turned into an outdoor space by the looks of things. It will be weird to no longer have that big glass roof there anymore.

-At first glance I'm not exactly clear as to what the retail component will look like. Is it just ground floor?

-What about the back of the complex? Any impact on Place Promenade and the surface lots around there?
