I would love to have the money to develop in Hamilton. I would totally do this just because I'm a nerd and I like vintage stuff.

It would have to be to code inside - also victorian buildings were notoriously drafty and cost a fortune to heat. So you'd have your work cut out for you, also you need the stonemasons with the training to be able to carve all that stone.

Looots of money

Well I don't think I'd build it exactly to late 1800s standards aha. I'd use modern materials and standards. It would just be designed to look that way.

Looks like this is moving forward, see attached motion from today's planning meeting.

---

Looks like originally this was going to be an addition to the building and then recladding, but they've learned the foundation can't support it so it will be torn down and built new.

From the above document
"is included on the Municipal Heritage Register as a non-designated building;"

Is there anything historical about that building? Is every building downtown included on the Municipal Heritage Register?

No - they demolished the historical building that was there already to build this one. It's fairly new historically, and aged quite badly.. a sad reality with most cheaply made modern buildings.

ahh yes, great progress in 4 years. Moving along at a typical Hamilton pace for a MASSIVE 5 storey project.

Did you guys read the attached motion?

“...as there is no intention to proceed with the designation of the building.”

to be a designated historical property it has to be both old (probably over a century) and has to have historical elements that are aesthetically pleasing with character and class. Like the right house would qualify, while the kresky building did not, cuz frankly, what was left was just worn down and ugly. Also I don't think it was old enough to qualify.

There is no age requirement on heritage buildings. I believe the newest heritage building in Toronto was completed in 2007, for example. And it was designated immediately upon completion.

Oh interesting! Never heard a situation like that before. So what were the criteria on the heritage designation? Any aesthetic qualities? Location?

Not too sure on the details, but it's the McKinsey and Company building on Charles street if you want to look it up.

Looks like it's getting torn down & replaced (likely with a new building that looks exactly like the proposed renovation)

Five storeys, outrageous density and height . Would have loved to see them take on the neighboring building and breathe even more life into the redevelopment.
