Fingers crossed it comes to Moncton/Halifax!

Darren Dreger tweeted that an annoucement will take place this afternoon and looks like Moncton/Halifax are the winner.

Now to see if its true that Team Canada asked to play all their games in one city...

Expect an announcement this afternoon confirming Halifax/Moncton have been awarded the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship.

I am not so delusional as to believe that Moncton will be treated equally to Halifax, but I still think it would be grossly unfair if we don't get a chance to see Team Canada at all at the Avenir Centre.

I don't see how this bid could possibly have won out over the likes of Québec City, Ottawa or Saskatchewan, all of whom now have arenas with a 50%+ higher seating capacity than Halifax, unless they bring the NB/PEI population into play and give Moncton all three of Canada's round-robin games before heading down to Halifax for the knockout rounds.

Hopefully we'll get some specifics sooner than later.

A reporter from Radio-Canada tweeted that he doubts Moncton will have any Canada games during the tournament (hoping for a pre-tournament game).

So it sounds to me that it was well known backstage, but didnt want to announce it at the moment in fear of losing some of the hype on the Moncton side. Its probably why Quebec/Ottawa became Quebec/Trois-Rivières a month ago; they couldnt decide on who would host Canada.

its still going to be a great product regardless on who play on both cities. It will be interesting to see how much of the rosters will take part of both 2022 and 2023 edition (which are only 4 months apart).

I wonder, do they usually try to keep the US and Canada in different groups? (Looking on Wiki, they were together in 2020 but the other years they were separate).

It may not be quite the draw of having Team Canada, but getting all/most of Team USA's games would probably still be quite the boon.

They do the serpentine system with the previous year's result.

In the last few year, it usually goes:

Group A: 1,4,5,8,9
Group B: 2,3,6,7, and the "promoted" country from Division I

According to Mayor Dawn Arnold, downtown hotels are already starting to fill up since the announcement this afternoon. I doubt too many fans are making reservations as of yet, but team (and IIHF) officials, players and team staff, reporters and broadcasters could fill up a lot of space.

This will be a boon for the hotel industry in the city.

Well this is not good. The World Junior Ice Hockey Championship set for Moncton's Avenir Centre and Halifax's Scotiabank Centre might be in jeopardy.

"On Tuesday, Scotiabank and Telus announced they were pausing their sponsorship of Hockey Canada due to an investigation of a 2018 sexual assault allegation against members of Canada's world junior hockey team.

Canadian Tire went one step further, saying it's withdrawing its financial support for the upcoming world junior tournament in Moncton and Halifax."

*Hockey Canada has since reportedly settled the lawsuit for an unknown amount and the allegations against the players have never been proven."

Hockey Canada is in a tight spot they settled out of court and since the allegations can't be proven they may not want to name the players. That being said if you're settling you probably have a good idea if it's true or not. Hopefully this is a minor bump in the road and the tourney goes ahead as planned.

According to the T&T, the final Team Canada selection camp will also be held in Moncton, in mid December.

Pre-tournament games are occasionally scattered elsewhere. Wouldn't surprise me if a couple landed in Saint John, Charlottetown, or Truro.

Will try my best to get out to a couple of the games in Moncton.

Thank you for sharing. One error is that 12/29 2:30pm game is in Halifax.

Thanks for the tips, edited the original post. Was getting brain fog trying to separate Avenir from Scotia lol.

And good for Moncton for getting the training/selection camp. Some negotiations must had taken place, as it was stated in the TVA article that "Team Canada wanted to be in one location for the entire tournament, including the training camp"

I know they won't but I'd love to see prices for the Latvia vs Slovakia games be $5-20 to really fill the arena.
