The Rocky & Bullwinkle statue was built to spoof the revolving cowgirl spinning atop the Sahara billboard.

Los Angeles Time

According to the Times, the September, 1961, publicity stunt "drew 5,000 milling, screaming, caterwauling celebrants outside the offices of Jay Ward Productions. Ward had obtained permits to have all but one lane of traffic on Sunset Blvd. blocked off and mischievously posted a sign that said, "Don't complain or we'll block this lane, too."

In July of 2013, unbeknownst to the public, the statue disappeared from the Sunset Strip.
Here's a ten second Instagram video--captured on camera by Tristan James Butler:

Though rumors about it abounded for over a year, it turns out the Ward family had hired a friend, Ricardo Scozzari,
to restore the statue with funding from DreamWorks and Twentieth Century Fox as part of an exhibit at The Paley Center
for Media in Beverly Hills, “The Jay Ward Legacy Exhibit.”.

He took it to Warner Bros. and restored it to it's original look.
It's new unveiling at the Paley Center for Media:

With the exhibit ending, the Jay C. Ward Family looked for a new home for the sculpture. They approached the City of West Hollywood about their respective interests
in receiving the work and Staff immediately saw this as a wonderful opportunity to bring back a formerly faded icon to the City and site it along Sunset Boulevard as
an engaging historic and cultural monument.

The sculpture is now a part of the City’s Urban Art collection and is temporarily on exhibition in West Hollywood City Hall. This is the best
photo I could find of it in the lobby.

I've walked by this many times the past couple months, but always when City Hall is closed, so I haven't been able to go inside and look at it!

The city website says:
Rocky and Bullwinkle will move to its permanent location at 8775 Sunset Boulevard, the City owned surface parking lot, in the fall of 2015.

It hasn't arrived there as of yet, though, and doesn't seem like a particularly apropos spot for it, either. In one of the articles I was reading
the man who restored it said if it is going to be installed outdoors again, it will need a lot of maintenance to keep it in good condition.
Moose and Squirrel have returned to the Sunset Strip, situated on a traffic island at Holloway/Palm and Sunset.

I just sold my house in Toluca Lake, but it had a rather large pine tree, too... full of squirrels!

Glendale mystery location.

eBay (from a few days ago / gone now)

Let's take a closer look at the right side.

detail

That poor car. ... Can gravel roads do that much damage

And let's look down the street.

I believe I see the word 'white'. ......something & White.

detail

And if you look at the left edge of the photo there's a large pole sign in the distance.

From the lettering/design I'm guessing. .perhaps. . ."Grab It Here" grocery store. (but there's no room for the 'Here'

Anyhoo. . .that's all I got - as far as clues.

Bear with me, Postimage is giving me trouble, so this is going to be all text for the moment.

The sign looked like "...RY W WHITE." In the 1941 Glendale city directory I found:

Harry W (Edith F) bldg contr 1526 Canada blvd h1730 Alamo dr

https://archive.org/details/cgl_0000.../n429/mode/1up

Plus the only other "Glendale" image the eBay vendor was selling was a construction photo of Glendale College, which is very close to 1526 Canada Blvd.

I made some screen grabs of the mountains from Google Earth, but you'll have to wait for now. (working now!!)
There's some missing ridgeline behind the hanging branch, which looks like it was removed for the freeway.

eBay

That's some nifty mountain line geolocation work Mackerm.

So maybe this is how the businesses line-up on an aerial from the 1940's.

The Rt. front fender of the 35 Ford is probably a result of pounding out a big dent in it not gravel. The fenders of that day were really strong steel, you pounded out as much as you could then leaded it smooth and primed and painted. Today they are thinner and Bondo type fillers are used. Or replacement if dent is bad. Fixing the dent was more common then.

Thanks, Bill! So that's what they were doing up there for months last year. I kept wondering why they had the triangle all tarped off. I'd asked some people one day who were up there what was going on and they said the city was storing road equipment in there while they were working on the streets.

If it were not for the quarantining all year I'd have seen this months ago, as I frequently catch a bus on that very spot when I have/had reason to go places.

Last time I was up there was March. I looked up some things online after seeing your post. Apparently they installed it on February 29th (there's photos here and there of that) and then covered it up until March 28th for a ceremony and unveiling.

Roadside America

This is a great place for it, it can be seen from all sides as Holloway, Sunset, Palm and Horn all converge in the same spot! (It's diagonally across from where Tower Records was located, for those that aren't familiar with the area.)

And speaking of quarantining:

Vis-à-vis our Harry W. White of Glendale:

He, quoth the Los Angeles Times of April 10, 1930, was the architect for this pleasant--and still extant--building near the corner of Holt and Garvey in Pomona.

gsv

The new building was dubbed El Casa del Val.

Closer to L.A., he was also the General Contractor (L.A. Times, 4/22/1951) for a building at 115 S. Central in Glendale, which, as we see . . .

gsv

isn't there anymore.

Here's an instructional video I made showing how to make photo overlays, which are rarely used ... probably because it's really a clumsy process. There are also a couple follow-ups on my YouTube channel with stuff I forgot to include.

Thanks, pretty interesting technique. I did something similar with a photo that was posted here and a shot I took from the same location(LA City Hall Observation Deck):

That's Wallich's Music City in the distance on the right so our military lady is posing in front of NBC Radio City. The intersection is Sunset and Vine.

Here's a short 1:33 clip of Wallich's Music City [c.1950s]

hmmmm. . .Television Corner. .so did Mr. Wallich start selling televisions?

And did you notice all the antennas on the roof?

We haven't seen this place on NLA.

eBay

I'd never heard of Salvatore Santaella until I happened upon this matchbook.

He was a "Mexican Composer & Pianist".... . other than that, I haven't found any information about his time in Hollywood.

abcdvdv

Judging by his eyes he's definitely the guy on the matchbook. (only younger)

The lady is Air Force. Based on the service cap I'd say mid to late 50s. That cap was issued for a relatively short time but I'll be d***ed if I can find when.

Cheers,

Earl

This 1953 photo's caption lists Solly's at 53 N. La Cienega Blvd. (Beverly Hills)

HHP

The most recent building at the 38 N. La Cienega address was Benihana's. It was torn down about 4 years ago and is still vacant.

The Stinking Rose is now at 55 N. La Cienega with a large parking area encompassing 53 N. La CIenega, I'm guessing.

Excellent find, Martin Pal.

The sign on the right is especially intriguing.

It appears to be lines of music with various words beneath.

I wonder if the two lines of music was traveling neon.

A terrific view of Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Vista CA [c.1950s]

eBay

Does anyone know Knott's Berry Farm well enough to label the buildings?

I can't even pick out the large 'Chicken Dinner' place.

Taken from a Globe Swift, N78176, built in 1946 and still flying as of 2018. Owned then by one Walter Fawcett of Wolfeboro NH.

Made several flying models of Swifts; it was and is a good prototype for a flying scale model.

Cheers,

Earl
