This will be the sixth tallest building in Texas, and the tallest one built in the state since 1985.

I had to let that sink in for a moment considering all the tall buildings between Houston and Dallas, that is quite an astonishing statement. Three taller in Houston, 2 in Dallas.

Oh, I would make a strong argument that it would be the 5th tallest in Texas.

I love Renaissance Tower, but the roof height there is substantially under the official height.

The Statesman has an update. Local media has been having a lot of new tower coverage lately - much more than usual.

The height that we've always had/seen for the Renaissance Tower was 886 feet. Early on, I took that number for granted, but it wasn't long before I realized it's likely not right. Before 1987, it simply had a flat box roof with a mechanical penthouse up there. Back then the stated height was 710 feet. I even did a Lego model of it once to try to get an idea of the scale of the spire, and there's no way that spire is 176 feet tall. I estimated the height to be closer to 810 feet. Then Google Earth came around and I was able to measure it. From the lowest side on the block to the spire, it's 856 feet. Part of that height isn't actually spire. The spire itself sits atop a couple of boxes atop the mechanical penthouse.

I was also measuring the Bank of America Plaza to get an idea of how tall 6 X Guadalupe would be compared to it, and it'll come up one foot above the first setback on the Bank of America Plaza in Dallas.

So, 6 X Guadalupe will be the 6th tallest in Texas, but it'll have the 5th highest roof. The main roof of the Renaissance Tower measures 713 feet. The mechanical penthouse is 734 feet.

I noticed 3 or 4 fire trucks here today. Looks like they are getting some training in? Quite a few people/cars there. 6X scrim is up on the fence.

They did training for the Dorsey/Huston demo as well.

They let Austin Habitat for Humanity go in, take whatever they wanted for the ReStore, then Austin Fire Department has a few days to break whatever they want. They are having fun I bet! Then it's demo time.

There's a very large construction sign facing 6th St. Didn't get a photo, but it's really looking like they mean business with this tower.

And University Towers. KVUE was there with AFD. They mentioned that a student had died in the building in a fire in 2001. I'd forgotten about that. I believe that was around the time that they started requiring older grandfathered dorms to be retrofitted for smark alarms and sprinkler systems. It still seems insane to me that those buildings didn't have them for such a long time.

AFD was definitely doing some sort of exercise this afternoon. Drove around the site and noticed some fire trucks with one along 7th with it's lights on and several fire hoses on the ground.

I was in San Francisco last week looking up at Salesforce tower thinking, It's going to be amazing once Austin breaks the 600ft barrier and soon be up there with the big boys.
