Great images (though, in the dept. of nitpicking, it's a '61 Lincoln...)-- that old airport sign reminds me of a scene-setting shot seen from time to time in Perry Mason episodes...in which it would be referred to as "International Airport"--no article "the" ("Della is picking us up at International Airport")--

Here, coincidentally, are Perry & Della in his '61/2/or 3 Lincoln convertible...

The photo with the boy in the trunk was taken in front of Barris Kustom on Riverside, just east of Lankershim.

DeMille film
There is a museum in town nearby which has some of the pieces that have been dug up out of the sand and pictures and things from the filming of the production. Very interesting.

Yep, that's next door to the gas station the young perps robbed and around the corner from the Gattis residence where they'd fled (presumably)on foot and were taken into custody.

It's great that the Times report was so chock-a-block with addresses. I looked 'em all up.

I flew through LAX in 1971, when it was still pretty much like this. It was much different from the madhouse it is today.

Boy, I'll say. My first commercial flight connected through there in 1961, and in 1969-1970 I commuted just about every Monday and Friday from Minneapolis to West Covina and back through LAX. I often wondered what happened to the wall of celebrity photographs that were in the Western Airlines VIP lounge.

And then there was the Carolina Pines ...

Cheers,

Earl

The Encounter Restaurant closed for business in December 2013 with no future plans to reopen, although the building's observation level is still open on weekends. Previously, the restaurant was closed in March 2007 for repairs after a half-ton piece of the stucco skin on the upper arches crashed onto the roof of the restaurant. Its seen in ER's photo above.

I had dinner there in about 1962. It was upscale at that time but later became just a coffee shop....now its closed.

This what I had then...salmon and red caviar.

New member tdinla (hey td) is currently the owner of the gorgeous Craftsman at 202 N Westlake Ave (1910), a home BifRayRock and I got interested in a while back:

zillow/mls

The priors:

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=42058

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=42059

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=42066

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=42067

Zillow states that the home was originally built in Hollywood, but td finds that it started out on Bunker Hill somewhere between Court and 1st (not an area known for Craftsman homes). Can anyone here shed more light on the history of td's house or Thomas Thurman, who moved this and other homes?

Not sure if this is even the right Thurman:

202 N Westlake is currently between Court and West 1st...the latter now being Beverly Blvd. Don't know where the Bunker Hill idea comes from. Before the street and address changes after the annexations occuring around 1910, Westlake in this area was Quebec Street. There are various references to Thurmans on Quebec going back to 1904--including a Louis, who built 121 that year....

Thomas and Minnie Thurman, an African-American couple, were living across the street at 203 during the '20s, when, in May 1925, they built a new foundation for 202...can't tell from building permits where the house was coming from.

From the Times, June 8, 1903:

Below: Is this a skylight? If it is, it seems like an odd place for one.

I can't imagine what else it might be.

On Fw's Sanborn map there is a small circle at that spot (there's one on the other side as well)

Do the small circles denote a skylight? (a more appropriate symbol would be a small rectangle....the same shape as a skylight).

If it is a skylight, why is it at the bottom of what Flyingwedge called the "slice".

p.s. And what is a F.A. Box? (lower left corner on the Sanborn)

Lankershim Blvd., June 1961.

Richard Wojcik San Fernando Historical Society

I wonder why the owner of the white convertible didn't just put the top back up?

According to the Sanborn key little circles like that are iron chimneys, but I'd have to agree that the photo
shows a skylight. I didn't see any square or rectangular skylights anywhere on the Sanborn page that shows
the building in the photo.

As to why the skylight is at the bottom of what I could have called the "wedge," maybe the skylight helped
illuminate the back of the ground-floor store better than a window on the side of the wall would have?

A skylight like this would certainly work better if someone decided to build right next door.

Thumbs up 202 n westlake ave, more info

Thanks Tovangar2, BifRayRock, and Gaylord Wilshire. Appreciate all the info on 202 N Westlake Ave!

The permit I found to move the house in 1925 says it was moved from "between Court St and W 1st Street" to 202 N Westlake Ave.
If I google Court and West 1st it takes me to a spot downtown next to the current DWP. (Part of old Bunker Hill)
I found old maps of downtown that have court street running uninterrupted to city hall. (Hope I've added images properly)
But as you say, not certain that's where it was moved from.

I didn't think there were too many craftsman places on Bunker Hill, and haven't found any photos that show this house there, but if anyone knows of any historical photos of this house, I would be incredibly grateful.

It really is a cool house, with a great vibe and view. We love it and can't wait to restore it. It also was clearly cut in half in order to be moved. There is a line running right through the wood floor and all moulding. Wish there were a pic of it while in process of being moved!

I think the real estate listing may have conflated the history of the pink house that Thomas Thurman also moved in 1925 from Normandie and that's why they thought it was originally in Hollywood? I'm not sure. But I can definitely picture it as a Jazz/party house at some point in it's history.

And btw, the gravestone that you showed is definitely the same Thomas Thurman. I found records through calisphere.org and rescarta. They also mention quebec street.

Any other insights into the history of the house (or photos esp) are greatly appreciated!

Hope I'm posting these images correctly:

thanks for your input on the skylight FW and Hoss.

I've been trying to find another example of a skylight like the one in the building, but I haven't had any luck yet.

maybe the alarm box hadn't been installed yet at the time of the photograph.

And while I have your attention. What do you think the little boy is sitting on in the photo.....a drinking fountain?

Here's the eastern end of Court Street in 1921, which shows its route before the streets were realigned for City Hall. Although the portion above Broadway is labeled "Court St", that was actually where Court Flight was built to go up the steep incline to the houses above the Hill Street tunnel.

BTW You seem to have used the thumbnail links to post your pictures, although the links at the bottom take me to the full-sized images. You'd probably be better off using postimage's "Hotlink for forums" code in future (and don't forget to credit your sources )
